Book excerpt: “A spare elegant memoir. . . . The immediacy of the child’s viewpoint . . . depicts both conflict and daily life without exploitation or sentimentality.” —Booklist, starred review “When a war ends it does not go away,” my mother says. “It hides inside us . . . Just forget!” But I do not want to do what Mother says . . . I want to remember. In this groundbreaking memoir set in Ramallah during the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War, Ibtisam Barakat captures what it is like to be a child whose world is shattered by war. With candor and courage, she stitches together memories of her childhood: fear and confusion as bombs explode near her home and she is separated from her family; the harshness of life as a Palestinian refugee; her unexpected joy when she discovers Alef, the first letter of the Arabic alphabet. This is the beginning of her passionate connection to words, and as language becomes her refuge, allowing her to piece together the fragments of her world, it becomes her true home. Transcending the particulars of politics, this illuminating and timely book provides a telling glimpse into a little-known culture that has become an increasingly important part of the puzzle of world peace. Winner, Arab American National Museum Book Award for Children’s/YA Literature “Beautifully crafted. Readers will be charmed by the writer-to-be as she falls in love with chalk, the Arabic alphabet, and the first-grade teacher who recognizes her abilities.” —School Library Journal, starred review “A compassionate, insightful family and cultural portrait.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “Brims with tension and emotion.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Synopsis Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism by : Andrew G. Bostom, M.D.
Download or read book Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism written by Andrew G. Bostom, M.D. and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exceedingly well organized and extensively documented....-CHOICEThe publication of the present anthology of primary sources and secondary studies on the theme of Muslim antisemitism is a groundbreaking event of major scholarly, cultural, and political significance. Editor Andrew Bostom has mined the relevant literature to produce the fullest record on this subject in existence. After the publication of his work, all the oft-repeated, but erroneous misunderstandings of a tolerant Islam, and of a medieval Jewish-Muslim ''golden age'' will need to be permanently retired. Everyone interested in Jewish and Islamic history, as well as current events in the Middle East, should read this book - and soon.-Steven T. Katz, Director, Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies, Boston University, and author of Post-Holocaust Dialogues and The Holocaust in Historical ContextThe antisemitism of the Muslim Middle East that we hear, see, and experience daily - from the racist cartoons to the constant chorus of ''pigs and apes'' - is often attributed to European origins, as if the radical Muslim world learned this endemic hatred through the tragedy of imperialism and colonialism. In fact, a deep suspicion and frequent loathing of Jews is deeply rooted in the Middle East, antedating European rule and sometimes evidenced in passages in the Koran and early holy Islamic texts.... Andrew Bostom produces a vast literature of Middle Eastern Islamic antisemitism, and critics may be as surprised at his conclusions as they are unable to refute his carefully compiled corpus of evidence.-Victor Davis Hanson, Senior Fellow, The Hoover Institution, Stanford University, author of Carnage and Culture and A War Like No OtherThis comprehensive, meticulously documented collection of scholarly articles presents indisputable evidence that a readily discernible, uniquely Islamic antisemitism-a specific Muslim hatred of Jews-has been expressed continuously since the advent of Islam. Debunking the conventional wisdom, which continues to assert that Muslim animosity toward Jews is entirely a 20th-century phenomenon fueled mainly by the protracted Arab-Israeli conflict, leading scholars provide example after example of antisemitic motifs in Muslim documents reaching back to the beginnings of Islam. The contributors show that the Koran itself is a significant source of hostility toward Jews, as well as other foundational Muslim texts including the hadith (the words and deeds of Muhammad as recorded by pious Muslim transmitters) and the sira (the earliest Muslim biographies of Muhammad). Many other examples are adduced in the writings of influential Muslim jurists, theologians, and scholars, from the Middle Ages through the contemporary era. These primary sources, and seminal secondary analyses translated here for the first time into English-such as Hartwig Hirschfeld''s mid-1880s essays on Muhammad''s subjugation of the Jews of Medina and George Vajda''s elegant, comprehensive 1937 study of the hadith-detail the sacralized rationale for Islam''s anti-Jewish bigotry. Numerous complementary historical accounts illustrate the resulting plight of Jewish communities in the Muslim world across space and time, culminating in the genocidal threat posed to the Jews of Israel today.Scholars, educators, and interested lay readers will find this collection an invaluable resource for understanding the phenomenon of Muslim antisemitism, past and present.FURTHER PRAISE FOR THE LEGACY OF ISLAMIC ANTISEMITISM:Stimulating and informative: a fascinating and disturbing voyage of historical discovery.... It is magnificent.-Martin Gilbert, official biographer of Winston ChurchillAuthor of Never Again: A History of the Holocaustand The Jews of Arab Lands: Their History in Maps[Bostom''s] eye-opening anthology should become an essential resource.-Ilan Stavans, Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture and Five-College 40th Anniversary Professor, Amherst CollegeDr. Andrew Bostom has written a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Persian wars in 1991 and 2003 have inspired the author to write about two more incoming wars according to Bible prophecy, the latter being the war to end all wars- Armageddon. It concerns the Messiah’s return during a time of trouble and turmoil known as the Tribulation. It also comments about our current situation in the world: economics, technology, unbelief, wars, weather patterns, etc. It’s primary villain is the antichrist, who comes to deceive the nations of the world and attacks God’s people. This antichrist is under the control of Satan himself. But the finality of it all is the issuance of a peaceful one-thousand year millennium by the Messiah Himself. The author wants the reading audience to examine themselves to see if they are ready to receive Him (the Son of God), and live eternally with Him.
Book Synopsis The Case for Palestine by : Dan Kovalik
Download or read book The Case for Palestine written by Dan Kovalik and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1948, the State of Israel was founded. While the philosophy of Zionism that advocated for a Jewish homeland in what was then known as Palestine dates back to 1897, the creation of Israel in 1948 was justified by the terrible crime of the Holocaust committed by Nazi Germany during WWII. Many defenders of Israel would like us to believe that the creation of Israel was a peaceful process on a barely populated land, however, this is far from true. Rather, the creation of Israel was accompanied by what is known by the Palestinians as the Nakba(catastrophe)—an operation in which 700,000 Palestinians were violently expelled from their land and their homes. Since that time, Israel has continued to usurp more and more land from the Palestinians who they falsely portray as a people without a history and without a culture. Israel has been particularly cruel to the people of Gaza—70 percent of whom are refugees from the 1948 Nakba. Gaza has been converted by Israel into what some call a giant open-air prison surrounded by barbed wire. It is in this context that we are currently witnessing the tragic violence between Israel and the people of Gaza—violence on a scale not seen in this land since the Nakba of 1948. Indeed, many Palestinians are calling this a second Nakba, with around 1.5 million Palestinians already displaced and thousands killed. All of this is being accomplished by Israel with critical military and diplomatic support from the United States. This second Nakba is also being facilitated by the mainstream press that both downplays and justifies what many believe to be genocidal violence against the Palestinian people. The Case for Palestine is written as a counternarrative, with the hope that, if the truth is told, this violence and displacement can be stopped before it is too late; before Gaza is no more.

Book Synopsis Zechariah and the Creator Lord Jesus Christ by : Dale M. Presley
Download or read book Zechariah and the Creator Lord Jesus Christ written by Dale M. Presley and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zechariah & the Creator LORD Jesus Christ is the third verse-by-verse commentary that the author has published on a Bible book. The first book, Way Truth:Life, is a complete commentary on the book of Revelation. Way Truth:Life contains an introduction and four chapters that very simply explain the most complex theological issues and has a scripture-indexed Chronology Chart of the 7-year Tribulation. The second book, Daniel & the Creator LORD Jesus Christ, is a complete commentary on the book of Daniel. All of the author's interpretations of scripture are based upon the most literal meaning of all passages of scripture that can be made without violating the true meaning of other scriptures contained elsewhere in the sixty-six books of God's Holy Word. All of the author's books are liberally-supplied with scripture references so that the reader can verify the truthfulness of the commentary as he or she proceeds. The book of Zechariah deals with what is happening in our own day perhaps more than any other Old Testament book. However, because the book of Zechariah is written in highly apocalyptic language, much like the book of Revelation, it is little understood by most Bible students. The author has therefore taken great care to include commentary on related passages of scripture in order to explain the meaning of every verse of this magnificent book in the simplest, most-understandable terms possible. In addition, a table is included that shows the time being referred to by every verse of the book of Zechariah. Since so much of Israel's history was accurately predicted by this sixth-century BC prophet, the actual history of Israel that has come to pass during their first-century Roman wars and during the period since the nation was reestablished in the promised land in 1948, is particularly described in detail. No study of eschatological (end-time) events is complete without a clear understanding of what God is doing through Israel today as explained in this book.
