Book Synopsis What Do We Mean by 'god'? by : Keith Ward
Download or read book What Do We Mean by 'god'? written by Keith Ward and published by Little Book of Guidance. This book was released on 2018 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language about God is something like the language of poetry--intended not to increase our information about the world--we know facts about the world already--but to evoke in us a certain attitude or way of looking at things or feeling about things. What sort of view of the world, then, is language about God trying to convey? Keith Ward suggests it is that the world is an expression of a reality beyond it. In this book, he unpacks the meaning of the word God and explains why we need to get rid of the crude and unhelpful assumptions that still abound. This is a book for all who are curious about how God, and God's actions, can be understood today.
Download or read book Cities of God written by Graham Ward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities of God traces urban culture of north America and Western Europe during the 1970s, to ask how theology can respond to the postmodern city. Since Harvey Cox published his famous theological response to urban living during the mid-1960s very little has been written to address this fundamental subject. Through analyses of contemporary film, architecture, literature, and traditional theological resources in Augustine and Gregory of Nyssa, Graham Ward lays out a systematic theology which has the preparation and building of cities as its focus. This is vital reading for all those interested in theology and urban living.

Download or read book God and Adam written by Rowland S. Ward and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reformed churches have always been interested in the covenant idea, first the covenant of grace in Christ, but also a covenant with Adam before sin, commonly called the covenant of works. But what the covenant of works really meant in the 17th century, when it became standard orthodoxy, is often very poorly understood today. That ignorance has contributed to modifications which are not always for the better.
Download or read book Life as a Vapor written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 31 meditations from the founder of Desiring God that will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and renew your faith. "You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). Living knowing that your life is a vapor is different than just living. Things here are passing away. You’ve got to hold on to what will stand. Savor what matters. This collection of thirty-one articles is full of that heart-longing after Christ that distinguishes Piper’s preaching ministry. You will feel as though you have stumbled into a garden as you enter these pages. The Scripture cuts, Christ is exalted in God, and we worship Him. Life Is Short. Eternity Is Long. Live Like It. You will exist forever. You and God are both in the universe to stay—either as friends on His terms, or enemies on yours—which it will be is proven in this life. And this life is a vapor. Two seconds, and we will be gone. In these thirty-one meditations, John Piper will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and a renewed relationship with Him. You’ll find your faith stirred to make every day count for Christ when you consider life as a vapor. Story Behind the Book Time is precious. We are fragile. Life is short. Eternity is long. Every minute counts. Oh, to be a faithful steward of the breath God has given me. Three texts resound in my ears: “Redeem the time” (Ephesians 5:16 ); “It is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy” (1 Corinthians 4:2); “His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10 ). Surely God means for our minutes on earth to count for something significant. Paul said, “In the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain” (Philippians 2:16). In the same way, I have good hope from the Lord that my “labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58 ).
Download or read book Authorized written by Mark Ward and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The King James Version has shaped the church, our worship, and our mother tongue for over 400 years. But what should we do with it today? The KJV beautifully rendered the Scriptures into the language of turn-of-the-seventeenth-century England. Even today the King James is the most widely read Bible in the United States. The rich cadence of its Elizabethan English is recognized even by non-Christians. But English has changed a great deal over the last 400 years—and in subtle ways that very few modern readers will recognize. In Authorized Mark L. Ward, Jr. shows what exclusive readers of the KJV are missing as they read God's word.#In their introduction to the King James Bible, the translators tell us that Christians must "heare CHRIST speaking unto them in their mother tongue." In Authorized Mark Ward builds a case for the KJV translators' view that English Bible translations should be readable by what they called "the very vulgar"—and what we would call "the man on the street."

Book Synopsis GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED by : E. F. Schumacher
Download or read book GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED written by E. F. Schumacher and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 1978-05-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the world wide best-seller, Small Is Beautiful, now tackles the subject of Man, the World, and the Meaning of Living. Schumacher writes about man's relation to the world. man has obligations -- to other men, to the earth, to progress and technology, but most importantly himself. If man can fulfill these obligations, then and only then can he enjoy a real relationship with the world, then and only then can he know the meaning of living. Schumacher says we need maps: a "map of knowledge" and a "map of living." The concern of the mapmaker--in this instance, Schumacher--is to find for everything it's proper place. Things out of place tend to get lost; they become invisible and there proper places end to be filled by other things that ought not be there at all and therefore serve to mislead. A Guide for the Perplexed teaches us to be our own map makers. This constantly surprising, always stimulating book will be welcomed by a large audience, including the many new fans who believe strongly in what Schumacher has to say.

Book Synopsis Why There Almost Certainly is a God by : Keith Ward
Download or read book Why There Almost Certainly is a God written by Keith Ward and published by Lion Hudson. This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Dawkins recently claimed that 'no theologian has ever produced a satisfactory response to his arguments'. The author welcomes all comers into philosophy's world of clear definitions, sharp arguments, and diverse conclusions. But when Dawkins enters this world, his passion tends to get the better of him, and he descends into stereotyping, pastiche, and mockery. In this stimulating and thought-provoking philosophical challenge, the author demonstrates not only how Dawkins' arguments are flawed, but that a perfectly rational case can be made that there, almost certainly, is a God.
Download or read book Godward written by Arome Osayi and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humankind is on a journey. People move in different directions under heaven in order to reach various destinations, clearly identified by the author as follows: forward by means of astrology; backward by history; upward by religion; downward and inward by science, art, philosophy and technology. You see, none of these directions has the capacity to answer mankind's deep-seated questions and lead them to the ultimate destination - God! Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me" (John 14:6, NIV). As simple as this sounds, it is the greatest answer to all of man's questions. The best direction to take in life therefore is Godward! And there is only one acceptable route - He is Jesus Christ, without whom every journey embarked upon will be an exercise in futility.
Book Synopsis John William Godward by : Vern G. Swanson
Download or read book John William Godward written by Vern G. Swanson and published by ACC Distribution. This book was released on 1997 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plucked from oblivion, Godward serves as the last best example of 19th century Greco-Roman Classicism. Of a reclusive nature and painting in a style completely out-of-date with post-war Europe, this genius was and remained obscure. Godward's brilliance, with the recent revival of interest in his fallow Classicists, Alma-Tadema and Lord Leighton, is only now coming to light. Godward's art sought to portray peace, feminine beauty and ideal perfection in an age careening headlong into atrocity. He did so by marvelously painted and composed pictures of beautiful women in halycon classical environments. He was a niche painter whose subject, while arresting, was narrow. However, only Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was better at painting this genre of 'patrician women on marble benches'. Melancholia, fed by ill health and increasing artistic criticism overwhelmed his fantasy world of serenity and he died by his own hand.
