Book excerpt: Not everyone is a friend of the manifold abbreviations that have by now beCome a part of the scientific language of medicine. In order to avoid misunderstanding these abbreviations, it is wise to refer to a reliable dic tionary, such as this one prepared by Heister. The abbreviation ED means, for instance, effective dose to the pharmacologist. However, it might also stand for emetic dose. Radiologists use the same abbreviation for erythema dose, and ED could also mean ethyl dichlorarsine. A com mon meaning of ECU is European currency unit, a meaning that might not be very often in scientific medical publications. ECU, however, also means environmental control unit or European Chiropractic Union. Hopefully, those making inventions and discoveries will make use of Heister's dictionary before creating new abbreviations when preparing manuscripts for scientific publications. It is a very worthwhile goal not to use the same abbreviation for several different terms, especially if it is already widely accepted to mean only one of them. It may be impossible, however, to achieve this goal in different scientific disciplines. Therefore, although it is wise for the abbreviations used in a publication to be defined, it is also very helpful for readers and writers to use a dictionary such as this one. The author deserves our warmest thanks since we know that compiling such a comprehensive dictionary is based upon incredibly hard effort.

This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the core problems of occupational health, safety and well-being of workers in the informal sector in developing countries, where it accounts for most of the rural labour force and a substantial percentage of the urban labour force. The sector is characterised by low incomes, unstable employment and lack of protection in the form of legislation/policies or trade unions. Though some health and problem-solving measures have been introduced, a focused academic effort to address the problems confronting workers in the unorganised sector, or informal economy, is lacking. The book evaluates workers’ physical and mental health in the context of labour migration, social inclusion of minorities and the differently abled, provisions for women workers, demonetisation, occupational safety for hazardous work, and in connection with various areas of informal work, e.g. agriculture, construction, transportation, sanitation, tanning, the tobacco industry, powerloom industry, surrogacy, and self-employment. It provides a well-rounded description of an analytical reflection on the challenges these workers face and focuses on social policy changes to help alleviate them. Accordingly, it offers a valuable asset for researchers and students interested in development studies, the sociology of work, health and labour economics, public health, and social work.

Book excerpt: Global society in the 21st century is facing challenges of improving the quality of air, water, soil and the environment and maintaining the ecological balance. Environmental pollution, thus, has become a major global concern. The modern growth of industrialization, urbanization, modern agricultural development and energy generation has resulted in the indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources for fulfilling human desires and needs, which has contributed in disturbing the ecological balance on which the quality of our environment depends. Human beings, in the truest sense, are the product of their environment. The man-environment relationship indicates that pollution and deterioration of the environment have a social origin. The modern technological advancements in chemical processes/operations have generated new products, resulting in new pollutants in such abundant levels that they are above the self-cleaning capacity of the environment. One of the major issues in recent times is the threat tohuman lives due to the progressive deterioration of the environment from various sources. The impact of the pollutants on the environment will be significant when the accumulated pollutants load will exceed the carrying capacity of the receiving environment. Sustainable development envisages the use of natural resources, such as forests, land, water and fisheries, in a sustainable manner without causing changes in our natural world. The Rio de Janeiro-Earth Summit, held in Brazil in 1992, focused on sustainable development to encourage respect and concern for the use of natural resources in a sustainable manner for the protection of the environment. This book will be beneficial as a source of educational material to post-graduate research scholars, teachers and industrial personnel for maintaining the balance in the use of natural sources for sustainable development.

Book excerpt: This first-of-a-kind volume provides a snapshot of existing science communication policy and practice in India across different S&T sectors, and offers solutions to building effective communication. It provides an understanding on how to avoid societal clashes in situations when science meets the public in these sectors. The editors and contributors argue that effective S&T communication leads not only to a more informed public but also benefits research itself, and in a changing society like India this is a crucial element related to good governance and policy making. In this volume, experienced masters of the craft provide practical solutions to making S&T communication more effective in a vast democracy like India, which has complex issues related to literacy levels, diverse languages, varying political will, reach, and resources. Through, discussions on cases of creating information modules for the public on the Internet, television and radio, social media, as well a s traditional ways of outreach like people’s science movements, holding popular science events, and fairs, the volume provides highly valuable directions on how developing countries with low resources and complex populations can communicate S&T research to the public and bridge communication gaps. This volume will interest researchers from science, social science, mass communication and public relations departments, journalists, as well as practitioners and policy makers from government and non-government institutions involved in S&T policy, practice and communication and people who want to understand the complex S&T landscape of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching principle that once integrated India’s institutions is often described by the word ‘dharma’. The notion of dharma goes well beyond what is known as ‘rule of law’. Rule of law is about publicly disclosed legal codes and processes. Dharma, on the other hand, is the holding principle that encompasses the whole of nature, including human nature. Dharma is much more nuanced and yet, paradoxically, more unambiguous than rule of law. The research presented in Globalizing Indian Thought tells us that India will do well to hark back to its ‘sanatana dharma’. The book decodes and deliberates on a few big ideas with the hope to shape India’s story on the world stage. It would be of interest to anyone who wishes to know how we can bring in ideas that are inherently Indian to broaden the discourse on matters of national and international importance.

Book excerpt: The use of cyber-physical systems in recent computing, communication, and control methods to design and operate intelligent and autonomous systems using cutting-edge technologies has led to many advances. By studying emerging trends in these systems, programming techniques can be optimized and strengthened to create a higher level of effectiveness. Cyber-Physical Systems for Next-Generation Networks provides emerging research on using cyber-physical systems (CPS) as a method to control design and operation of intelligent systems through next-generation networks. While highlighting issues such as increasing CPS complexity due to components within physical and industrial systems, this publication explores information on real-time sensing, reasoning, and adaptation for cyber-physical systems while gaining an understanding of evolutionary computing for it. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, academicians, researchers, and graduate-level students seeking current research on CPS in cutting-edge technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume examines the origins and evolution of India's foreign policy from 1947 to the present day. It focuses on India's foreign relations with a number of key regional states (Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), adjoining regions (the Middle East and Southeast Asia), and the great powers (the United States, Russia, and the People's Republic of China). All the chapters utilize the level of analysis approach - a well-established conceptual scheme drawn from the theoretical study of international politics - in organizing the substantive cases. In the introductory chapter, the editor carefully spells out the intellectual antecedents of the level of analysis framework and discusses its utility for the case studies. India's foreign relations are undergoing a fundamental transformation, and yet there is an acute paucity of theoretically informed and empirically rich work on the subject. This volume seeks to address that important lacuna and will be of interest to journalists, analysts, and scholars interested in understanding the foreign policy of an emergent power." -- Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Appointed as the chief economic adviser (CEA) to the Government of India in 2009, Basu—a theorist, with special interest in development economics, and a professor of economics at Cornell University—discovered the complexity of applying economic models to the real world. Effective policymaking, Basu learned, integrates technical knowledge with political awareness. In this book, he describes the art of economic policymaking, viewed through the lens of his two and a half years as CEA.
