Book excerpt: Madison is just like any other twelve-year-old mucking through middle school until suddenly she's not. She should have known something was wrong when her mom forgot to meet her at the bus stop. Those suitcases stacked inside the door, now that gave her pause... but her mother explained them away. Sort of. It's not like your dad goes missing every day. She was certain it was all a big misunderstanding... poor cell service, a lost cell phone, or a dead battery... but if that mishap scored her a trip to Ireland, she was game. Perhaps those wrinkly little men skulking around the pubs down by the River Liffey should have clued her in that her life was about to change in a very big way... but no. Everything Madison thought she knew about this world, her family, her life was ripped away by six outlandish words... "I am Sidhe, as are you." "What's a Sidhe?" you ask. The Sidhe are the immensely powerful, magic-wielding faeries born in Celtic Mythology... the water, air, and wood spirits who have battled against demons and protected mankind for centuries. Madison has just discovered she is one of them... but she is no ordinary Sidhe. Madison is one of the Chosen Ones, one of three young girls secreted inside the human realm at birth, protected by Sidhe guardians until they are old enough to fulfill the prophecy. "What is this prophecy?" you gasp. Ah. If you wish to obtain that knowledge, then you must journey into Otherworld, cross through Tír na nÓg into Ogham, and eat the berries from the Rowan Tree. Please hurry. The border between the realms is crumbling. Violence, evil, and darkness are ascending; threatening to destroy Madison... the Chosen Ones... Tír na nÓg... the human realm... and me. Elgin, the Kelpie.

Download or read book Moon Tide written by Dawn Tripp and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-02-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lush and haunting first novel, Moon Tide follows the lives of three women in a small fishing town on the Massachusetts coast, from 1913 to the Great New England Hurricane of 1938. Through sensual and interwoven stories, Moon Tide explores the secret workings of the heart—the violence of desire and memory, the redemptive power of longing—matched against society’s rules of class and the unpredictable tempers of the natural world. At the center of the novel is Eve, who takes refuge in silence and art after the death of her mother. Eve can sense how the past nips at the heels of the living, and her ethereal beauty inspires a quiet passion in Jake, the son of a local stonemason. For Elizabeth, Eve’s wealthy, eccentric grandmother, one summer at Westport Point extends into a lifetime. She stays on in the town year-round, building a great library in her house for the cold New England winters, haunted by the Ireland of her youth and by one man’s doomed obsession with nature. And then there is Maggie, the exotic stranger with a peculiar clairvoyance. Maggie lives in the precarious space between the locals and the rich—a balance that is ultimately compromised by Wes, a ruthless rum-smuggler, whose desire for her triggers small cruelties and then a staggering act of violence. With lyrical prose, wisdom, and insight, Dawn Clifton Tripp maps the shifting tensions in a small town on the verge of change. Like the growing weight of a storm, the lives in Westport Point build in emotional momentum even as the Great Hur-ricane approaches, and the landscape of the earth comes to reflect the geography of the mind. A novel of love and loss, survival and revelation, Moon Tide is an extraordinary debut.

Book Synopsis A Century of Irish Drama by : Stephen Watt
Download or read book A Century of Irish Drama written by Stephen Watt and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces a significant shift in 20th century Irish theatre from the largely national plays produced in Dublin to a more expansive international art form. Confirmed by the recent success outside of Ireland of the "third wave" of Irish playwrights writing in the 1990s, the new Irish drama has encouraged critics to reconsider both the early national theatre and the dramatic tradition it fostered. On the occasion of the centenary of the first professional production of the Irish Literary Theatre, the contributors to this volume investigate contemporary Irish drama's aesthetic features and socio-political commitments and re-read the plays produced earlier in the century. Although these essayists cover a wide range of topics, from the productions and objectives of the Abbey Theatre's first rivals to mid-century theatre festivals, to plays about the "Troubles" in the North, they all reassess the oppositions so commonplace in critical discussions of Irish drama: nationalism vs. internationalism, high vs. low culture, urban experience vs. rural or peasant life. A Century of Irish Drama includes essays on such figures as W. B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, J. M. Synge, Sean O'Casey, Brendan Behan, Samuel Beckett, Marina Carr, Brian Friel, Frank McGuinness, Christina Read, Martin McDonagh, and many more. Stephen Watt is Professor of English and Cultural Studies at Indiana University-Bloomington, and author of Postmodern/Drama: Reading the Contemporary Stage, Joyce, O'Casey, and the Irish Popular Theatre, and essays on Irish and Irish-American culture. He has also written extensively on higher education, most recently Academic Keywords: A Devil's Dictionary for Higher Education (with Cary Nelson). Eileen M. Morgan is a lecturer in English and Irish Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is currently working on Sean O'Faolain's biographies of De Valera and on Edna O'Brien's 1990s trilogy, and is preparing a book-length study on the influence of radio in Ireland. Shakir Mustafa is a Visiting Instructor in the English department at Indiana University. His work has appeared in such journals as New Hibernia Review and The Canadian Journal of Irish Studies, and he is now translating Arabic short stories into English.
