Book excerpt: While analyzing Damon Runyon's high spirited work in terms of historical contexts, popular culture, and of the changing function of the media, Schwarz argues that in his columns and stories Runyon was an indispensable figure in creating our public images of New York City culture, including our interest in the demi-monde and underworld that explains in part the success of The Godfather films and The Sopranos . In his lively and exuberant chapters that include a panoramic view of New York City between the World Wars - with a focus on its colourful nightlife - Schwarz examines virtually every facet of Runyon's career from sports writer, daily columnist, trial reporter, and Hollywood figure to the author of the still widely-read short stories that were the source of the Broadway hit Guys and Dolls . As part of his discussion of Runyon's art and the artistry of Runyon's fiction, Schwarz skilfully examines the special language of the Broadway stories known as 'Runyonese', and explains how 'Runyonese' has become an adjective for describing flamboyant behaviour.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following completion of the U.S. air base in Natal, Brazil, in 1942, U.S. airmen departing for North Africa during World War II communicated with Brazilian mechanics with a thumbs-up before starting their engines. This sign soon replaced the Brazilian tradition of touching the earlobe to indicate agreement, friendship, and all that was positive and good—yet another indication of the Americanization of Brazil under way during this period. In this translation of O Imperialismo Sedutor, Antonio Pedro Tota considers both the Good Neighbor Policy and broader cultural influences to argue against simplistic theories of U.S. cultural imperialism and exploitation. He shows that Brazilians actively interpreted, negotiated, and reconfigured U.S. culture in a process of cultural recombination. The market, he argues, was far more important in determining the nature of this cultural exchange than state-directed propaganda efforts because Brazil already was primed to adopt and disseminate American culture within the framework of its own rapidly expanding market for mass culture. By examining the motives and strategies behind rising U.S. influence and its relationship to a simultaneous process of cultural and political centralization in Brazil, Tota shows that these processes were not contradictory, but rather mutually reinforcing. The Seduction of Brazil brings greater sophistication to both Brazilian and American understanding of the forces at play during this period, and should appeal to historians as well as students of Latin America, culture, and communications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular music from Brazil and the Caribbean belongs to those cultural practices that are considered, both inside and outside of their countries of origin, to bear the indelible marks of ethnicity. On the basis of a corpus made up of over one thousand songs recorded between 1920 and 1960 in Brazil, Cuba, Martinique, and Trinidad and Tobago, Record it, and let it be known offers an exemplary textual analysis of the ways in which these countries' main musical genres staged the encounters of the identity categories of ethnicity and gender in song lyrics during the decades preceding the emergence of more ideologically conscious musical currents. Special attention is paid to the following topics: the relations between ethnicity and national identity; the presence of Africa and slavery; the presentation of the gendered and ethnically marked body; and, finally, the description of cultural blackness. Book excerpt: For Jordan Duncan, the good life as he knows it comes to an abrupt crossroad when a mysterious client enters his LA office with allegations that the CPA firm Duncan is working for is "in bed" with the Internal Revenue Service. A former college athlete, Jordan has become a successful taxpayer advocate, representing delinquent taxpayers in negotiations with the IRS, who implement a "feed the beast" mentality. Tension is at a fever pitch in Los Angeles in 1995. The intensity mounts as hotly contested tax issues of the 1996 presidential election unfold. With the help of his politically connected girlfriend, an honorable former IRS director, and a grizzled Vietnam vet, Jordan gathers evidence to make a case. But to whom? Taking on the US Department of Treasury is no small task. The IRS seems impenetrable. Political and corporate deception is unraveled within the complex tax system. A murder ensues. The stakes are high. What started as a question of right and wrong has become a matter of life and death. Can anyone rein in this ravenous bureaucratic tax monster created by the US Congress? Based on true historical events of tax reform that exposed the abusive nature and uncontrolled power of the Internal Revenue Service, Taxman follows Jordan Duncan on a treacherous journey from the beaches of Southern California to the hallowed congressional chambers on Capitol Hill.

This comprehensive and accessible Companion is the first collection of essays to survey, in depth, Ellington's career, music, and place in popular culture. An international cast of authors includes renowned scholars, critics, composers, and jazz musicians. Organized in three parts, the Companion first sets Ellington's life and work in context, providing new information about his formative years, method of composing, interactions with other musicians, and activities abroad; its second part gives a complete artistic biography of Ellington; and the final section is a series of specific musical studies, including chapters on Ellington and song-writing, the jazz piano, descriptive music, and the blues. Featuring a chronology of the composer's life and major recordings, this book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Ellington's enduring artistic legacy.
