Book excerpt: From award-winning author Pablo Cartaya comes a deeply moving middle grade novel about a daughter and father finding their way back to each other in the face of their changing family and community. A SCHNEIDER FAMILY BOOK AWARD HONOR FOR MIDDLE GRADE Emilia Torres has a wandering mind. It's hard for her to follow along at school, and sometimes she forgets to do what her mom or abuela asks. But she remembers what matters: a time when her family was whole and home made sense. When Dad returns from deployment, Emilia expects that her life will get back to normal. Instead, it unravels. Dad shuts himself in the back stall of their family's auto shop to work on an old car. Emilia peeks in on him daily, mesmerized by his welder. One day, Dad calls Emilia over. Then, he teaches her how to weld. And over time, flickers of her old dad reappear. But as Emilia finds a way to repair the relationship with her father at home, her community ruptures with some of her classmates, like her best friend, Gus, at the center of the conflict. Each Tiny Spark by Pablo Cartaya is a tender story about asking big questions and being brave enough to reckon with the answers.

This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Maths and Physics of Quantum Mechanics details the mathematics and physics that are needed to learn the principles of quantum mechanics. It provides an accessible treatment of how to use quantum mechanics and why it is so successful in explaining natural phenomena. This book clarifies various aspects of quantum physics such as ‘why quantum mechanics equations contain “I”, the imaginary number?’, ‘Is it possible to make a transition from classical mechanics to quantum physics without using postulates?’ and ‘What is the origin of the uncertainty principle?’. A significant proportion of discussion is dedicated to the issue of why the wave function must be complex to properly describe our “real” world. The book also addresses the different formulations of quantum mechanics. A relatively simple introductory treatment is given for the “standard” Heisenberg matrix formulation and Schrodinger wave-function formulation and Feynman path integrals and second quantization are then discussed. This book will appeal to first- and second-year university students in physics, mathematics, engineering and other sciences studying quantum mechanics who will find material and clarifications not easily found in other textbooks. It will also appeal to self-taught readers with a genuine interest in modern physics who are willing to examine the mathematics and physics in a simple but rigorous way. Key Features: Written in an engaging and approachable manner, with fully explained mathematics and physics concepts Suitable as a companion to all introductory quantum mechanics textbooks Accessible to a general audience

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, richly-drawn social fiction became one of England’s major cultural exports. At the same time, a surprising companion came to stand alongside the novel as a key embodiment of British identity: the domesticated pet. In works by authors from the Brontës to Eliot, from Dickens to Hardy, animals appeared as markers of domestic coziness and familial kindness. Yet for all their supposed significance, the animals in nineteenth-century fiction were never granted the same fullness of character or consciousness as their human masters: they remain secondary figures. Minor Creatures re-examines a slew of literary classics to show how Victorian notions of domesticity, sympathy, and individuality were shaped in response to the burgeoning pet class. The presence of beloved animals in the home led to a number of welfare-minded political movements, inspired in part by the Darwinian thought that began to sprout at the time. Nineteenth-century animals may not have been the heroes of their own lives but, as Kreilkamp shows, the history of domestic pets deeply influenced the history of the English novel.

And he is protected, not only by his custom-fitted body armor, but by an odd being which seems to live within him, a cold killing machine he calls "The Engine."

Book excerpt: Have you had periods in your life when everything seemed to be going right, the future looked rosy, you were prosperous and happiness seemed to saturate your whole being? Did it seem as though you were in the spring of life with a promising future when suddenly some destructive force thrust sorrow and despair upon you and every flourishing sprig of hope was crushed by life’s Blackberry Winter? How can any woman lose the most important person to her and still have a meaningful, happy life? Mattie Posey struggles to achieve this and out of desperation agrees to marry an older man, who she admittedly does not love. Grief has dominated her life for the past eight years and she has finally made the decision to marry John Mayo in spite of the fact that she can never give her heart to anyone. He is very understanding, but eventually wearies of trying to compete with a dead man for Mattie‘s affection. BLACKBERRY WINTER continues the true-life story of the Author’s grandparents who were first introduced to you in her book, LEAVE ME WHERE I LIE. Actual events have been fictionalized to create an intriguing story while it still accurately records the course of the lives of Mattie “Parilee” Posey Mayo and her family. You will anxiously follow the romance of Wade Posey who falls in love with a beautiful woman from Ireland and makes plans to marry her in spite of the objections of his children. He is devastated when he learns facts about her that he must consider before asking her to marry him. You will share the joys of Mattie and her family as they thrive in the Roaring Twenties and will also feel their pain as they endure the hardships of The Great Depression of the early thirties and the deaths of some of the people closest to them.
