Book Synopsis The Good Little Girl by : Annette Stephens
Download or read book The Good Little Girl written by Annette Stephens and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On her eleventh birthday, Annette’s parents gave her a cowgirl suit. She loved it: she put it on immediately, and set off for her favourite playground, in a nearby park. Some time later she returned home, her flesh scraped and bruised, her brand new suit now dirty and torn. Annette didn’t answer when her parents asked her what had happened. She didn’t know what to say, so she kept quiet. She would keep quiet for a long time after that day … This powerful autobiography tells the sad story of a life stunted in childhood. Traumatised by a brutal assault, Annette retreats into herself. Many years pass before she seeks help: a friend recommends a ‘personal development organisation’. Before she knows it, she has fallen into the clutching hands of a cult called Kenja. Forsaking her children, her home, her job and her finances, she devotes herself with a convert’s zeal to Kenja’s activities, doing menial jobs to raise money for its leaders, spending all of her life’s savings on its ‘courses’, and recruiting members of the public to join its ranks. Over time, Annette realises that, for all she has given to Kenja, she has not improved, and is instead completely dependent on the group for her self-esteem. She wants to get out but finds herself unable to: she can’t stop being the prey. When she eventually does act – having suffered further assaults, and witnessed others – she is devastated, forsaken and despised by the only community she has ever belonged to. Determined to bring Kenja’s leader to justice – and, in the process, find some redemption and perhaps even peace for herself – Annette embarks on a legal odyssey. The Good Little Girl is Annette’s story about a traumatic beginning and journey to a triumphant ending.

Book Synopsis The Chrysokamino Metallurgy Workshop and Its Territory by : Philip P. Betancourt
Download or read book The Chrysokamino Metallurgy Workshop and Its Territory written by Philip P. Betancourt and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 2006 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed report describes archaeological fieldwork conducted between 1995 and 1997 in rural northeast Crete. Excavations were made in two locations: a metallurgy workshop (abandoned in EM III) and a nearby rural habitation site, perhaps a farmhouse (used until LM III). An intensive survey of the vicinity revealed other activities in the area from the Early Neolithic onwards, and placed the sites in a micro-regional context. A publication of the Minoan farmhouse will appear subsequently, but this volume stands on its own as both an overview of the project and as a detailed study of the copper smelting workshop.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book first appeared in 1996, it was “Pottery 101,” a basic introduction to the subject. It served as an art book, a history book, and a reference book, but also fun to read, beautiful to look at, and filled with good humor and good sense. After twenty years of faithful service, it’s been expanded and brought up-to-date with photographs of more than 1,600 pots from more than 1,600 years. It shows every pottery-producing group in the Southwest, complete with maps that show where each group lives. Now updated, rewritten, and re-photographed, it's a comprehensive study as well as a basic introduction to the art.

Book Synopsis The Archaeology of the Early Islamic Settlement in Palestine by : Jodi Magness
Download or read book The Archaeology of the Early Islamic Settlement in Palestine written by Jodi Magness and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2003-06-23 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common perception that the Muslim conquest of Palestine in the seventh century caused a decline in the number and prosperity of settlements throughout the country. The role played by archaeology in perpetuating this view, claims Magness, is particularly insidious, because it is perceived, rightly or wrongly, as providing “scientific” (and therefore “objective”) data. Thus, archaeological evidence is frequently cited by scholars as proof or confirmation that Palestine declined after the Muslim conquest, and especially after the rise of the Abbasids in the mid-eighth century. Instead, Magness argues that the archaeological evidence, freed insofar as possible of political and/or religious biases, supports the idea that Palestine and Syria experienced a tremendous growth in population and prosperity between the mid-sixth and mid-seventh centuries. Such a radical shift in the interpretation of the evidence guarantees that this volume will be a benchmark with which future interpretations must reckon. The book includes a CD with map and key, which provides additional information regarding the sites studied and the area examined.
