This book was released on 2007 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic rock-perched sea-girt Tintagel is a magical place that resonates with Arthurian associations - and the archaeological reality is no less intriguing than the legend. Investigation of the site began in the 1930s, when Dr Ralegh Radford uncovered remains of buildings with significant volumes of eastern Mediterranean and North African pottery of fifth- to seventh-century date, suggesting a western British site of iconic importance in the economy of the late Antique and Byzantine world. The research presented in this book comes from renewed fieldwork carried out at this promontory site over several seasons between April 1990 and July 1999, using modern archaeological techniques, together with previously unpublished work from Radford's private archive, along with that of his architect, J A Wright. This work has demonstrated the complexity and variability of building forms and associated occupation at the site and the wide-ranging connections of Tintagel during the fifth to seventh centuries, as reflected in the extensive ceramic assemblage, while re-examination of the 'Great Ditch' has established that this is the largest promontory or hill-top site of its period. A unique glass assemblage and a stone with a probable imperial inscription to Honorius - later the object of graffiti from three post-Roman personages, Paternus, Coliavus and Artognou - serve as dramatic testimony to the cultural and literary milieu of high-status Dumnonian society in the post-Roman period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legend of Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table dominates the mythology of Britain, but could this story prove more fact than fiction? Recent archaeological findings have lead Geoffrey Ashe to believe there is more truth to Arthurian legend than previously accepted. The Quest for Arthur's Britain examines the historical foundation of the Arthurian tradition, and presents the remarkable results of excavations to date at Cadbury (reputed site of Camelot), Tintagel, Glastonbury and many places known almost exclusively to Arthurian scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often featuring in lists of the world's best walks, the South West Coast Path is 630 miles long, and passes through two World Heritage Sites. This guide to the path is a modern take on the traditional (turn right at the stile, and follow the footpath to the bridge) guidebook: instead of telling readers where to go step by step, Stephen gives fantastic ideas for what to do as they travel along the path. There are so many amazing adventures and places to visit (some 'secret' and some well known) and this guide highlights 1,000 of them, all situated along the route. After an Introduction giving a history of the path and the stories of the people who made it (Why is this path the most popular National Trail? Why is it so closely associated with tales of King Arthur? When is the best time to visit?) the bulk of the book focuses on all the amazing things you can do along the path itself. It is divided into regions, with over 70 adventures/highlights per region: West Somerset, North Devon, Torridge, North Cornwall, South Cornwall, South Hams, Torbay, Teignbridge, East Devon, West Dorset, Weymouth and Portland, Purbeck and Poole. Each region is introduced with a 'Best For' section, with the ten best places for secret swims, tidal woods, fossils etc. It then highlights where to go, each place accompanied by basic directions, a short description and postcode/map coordinates. Readers can use this guide whilst walking the path in either direction, and at home when planning – Stephen Neale's engaging writing and beautiful photography make this book a joy to spend time with.
