This book was released on 1980-07-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timothy Pickering was an important figure in the early American republic. For more than fifty years, he was deeply entrenched in the political, military and diplomatic affairs of the young nation. He held important administrative posts during the Revolution, two cabinet posts, and served as a congressman, senator, and as a spokesman for the extremist element of New England's Federalists. Clarfield presents the first comprehensive biography of Pickering, and a critical assessment of this controversial and often intractable man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with controversies related to British and French attacks on U.S. neutral trade in 1805, this book looks at crucial developments in national politics, public policy, and foreign relations from the perspective of New England Federalists. Through its focus on the partisan climate in Congress that appeared to influence federal statutes, New England Federalists: Widening the Sectional Divide in Jeffersonian America sets out to explain, in their own words, why Federalists, especially those often deemed extreme or radical by contemporaries and historians alike, escalated a campaign to repeal the Constitution’s three-fifths clause (which included slaves in the calculation for congressional representation and votes in the Electoral College) while encouraging violations of federal law and advocating northern secession from the Union. Unlike traditional interpretations of early nineteenth-century politics that focus on Jeffersonian political economy, this study brings the impetus for Federalist obstructionism and sectionalism into sharp relief. Federalists who became the sole defenders of New England’s economic independence and free labor force, later issued calls for northerners to unite against the spread of slavery and southern control of the central government. Along with controversies that placed sectional harmony in jeopardy, this work links themes in Federalist opposition rhetoric to the important antislavery arguments that would flourish in antebellum culture and politics.

Public Receptions and Honors in Salem and Newburyport. 1806-1808. The ninth Congress convened December 2d, 1805. Colonel Pickering presented his credentials as appointed a Senator by the legislature of the State of Massachusetts, for the term of six years, to commence on the fourth day of March last. At this session he appears to have been in constant attendance, taking part in cursory debate, but made no elaborate or extended speech. His history for the period, and until the next session, is given in passages of letters to his family and friends. He left Boston in the stage-coach, on the morning of the 19th of November, and reached New York on the evening of the 23d. The termination of the journey, and some of its incidents, illustrating the difficulties of travel in those days compared with the present, are thus described in a letter to his wife: ? City or Washington, December 2d, 1805. I arrived here on Saturday evening, the 30th ultimo, in safety and in health, save a slight cold contracted on the journey. From Baltimore we cume in company with another stage-wagon, loaded with members of Congress. When within about f...
Book Synopsis The Opposition Press of the Federalist Period by : Donald H. Stewart
Download or read book The Opposition Press of the Federalist Period written by Donald H. Stewart and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1969-06-30 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald H. Stewart provides a comprehensive analysis of how the Republican press of the 1790s hastened the decline of the Federalist Party and promoted the election of Thomas Jefferson to the Presidency. Using both ridicule and serious argument, Republican editors of the decade attacked all aspects of Federalist foreign and domestic policies. Professor Stewart's examination of thousands of issues of more than 500 newspapers of the period enabled him to analyze the broad patterns of Republican opposition, the techniques used by the partisan editors, and the arguments that appeared most persuasive to the public. Many excerpts from these newspapers allow the reader to see how logical and emotional appeals were used in generating a groundswell of feeling against all things Federalist. In addition to the basic and well-known issues, a number of long-forgotten controversies and personalities are recalled to enhance understanding of the period. Professor Stewart concludes that, although the press alone was not responsible for Jefferson's elevation to the Presidency, he probably could not have been elected without the considerable number of newspapers that consistently supported and promulgated his views.
