Book excerpt: Defining the role of Ancestral Rocky Mountain (ARM) tectonics on basin evolution and infill is critical for hydrocarbon exploration and development in the Permian and Orogrande basins, yet the timing and controls of late Paleozoic ARM deformation remain poorly constrained. We document these relationships in the Pennsylvanian–Permian Bursum Formation., which preserves a continuous record of deposition synchronous with uplift of the adjacent Pedernal fold-thrust belt. Sedimentation took place between two end-member depositional systems: 1) a shallowly dipping, carbonate ramp, and 2) an alluvial fan-deltaic siliciclastic system. The newly developed high-resolution stratigraphic framework from nine measured sections averaging 94 m in thickness shows that the Bursum Formation transitions from open-marine ammonite-bearing shales at the base to nonmarine conglomerates at the top. Provenance analyses indicate that alluvial fans were localized along active faults and clasts were sourced from uplifted upper Paleozoic strata and Pedernal metamorphic basement. Paleocurrent data reveal key paleotopographic features that influenced facies distributions, with a shift to multimodal patterns identified in offshore littoral sand bodies. Growth strata, soft-sediment deformation, fault-slip analysis, and unconformable contact relationships with the underlying Pennsylvanian Holder Formation and overlying Permian Abo Formation. show that deposition occurred contemporaneously with compressional and right-lateral oblique slip along the Pedernal uplift. These results and cross section restoration show that the Fresnal Fault and La Luz Anticline experienced a resurgent phase of ARM tectonism that peaked in the latest Virgilian (~301 Ma) and rapidly waned into the earliest Wolfcampian (~296 Ma). These findings constrain the poorly understood timing of the end of ARM deformation and provide insight into a key gap in the stratigraphic record of southern New Mexico and west Texas

Book excerpt: Anatomy of a Paleozoic Basin: The Permian Basin, USA By any standard, the Permian Basin of West Texas and New Mexico is a "super basin." With cumulative oil production of nearly 40 billion barrels (Bbbl) and annual production of nearly 2 Bbbl, it's currently one of the most important hydrocarbon-producing basins in the world. More than 29 Bbbl of this production have come from conventional (carbonate and sandstone) reservoirs, about 75 percent from carbonate reservoirs. Approximately 9-10 Bbbl of the basin's cumulative oil production have come from unconventional targets-primarily organic-matter-rich mudrocks and associated facies-during the last 10 years. The Permian Basin contains perhaps a greater volume of these mudrocks than that of any other basin, a major reason for its current global prominence among hydrocarbon-producing basins. The Permian Basin also contains one of the most extensive data sets in terms of wells drilled, cored wells, and adjacent outcrop analogs, providing a basis for studies that not only helps define the distribution of hydrocarbons but also serves as an excellent laboratory for examining basin-forming processes. This two-volume Bureau of Economic Geology Report of Investigations and AAPG Memoir contains 26 papers covering a breadth of Permian Basin topics, including 4 papers on the basin's structural geology, tectonics, and Precambrian geology; 4 papers on its paleontology and biostratigraphy; 16 on its sedimentology and stratigraphy; 1 on its reservoir systems; and 1 that provides a history and synthesis of the major depositional and deformational events that formed the basin. The goal of this set of papers is to capture, in a single publication, the wealth of information and knowledge about Permian Basin geology that has been generated over the 60 years that have passed since John Galley's early comprehensive paper on the basin in 1958.

Book excerpt: This book honors the career of Professor Elizabeth Gierlowski-Kordesch who was a pioneer and leader in the field of limnogeology since the 1980s. Her work was instrumental in guiding students and professionals in the field until her untimely death in 2016. This collection of chapters was written by her colleagues and students and recognize the important role that Professor Gierlowski-Kordesch had in advancing the field of limnogeology. The chapters show the breadth of her reach as these have been contributed from virtually every continent. This book will be a primary reference for scientists, professionals and graduate students who are interested in the latest advances in limnogeologic processes and basin descriptions in North and South America, Europe, Africa, and China. *Free supplementary material available online for chapters 3,11,12 and 13. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water focuses on the principal sources of indoor radon and detecting radon through geochemical and hydrological studies of ground water. The book addresses how to measure radon, covers geological field study techniques, and presents techniques for assessing radon potential. The geochemical and hydrological studies of ground water cover such areas as health effects and radionuclides in geology. Techniques for measuring radon in ground water are also provided. Field Studies of Radon in Rocks, Soils, and Water is an excellent practical guide for geologists, geochemists, ground water professionals, and geophysicists interested in radon. Features
