Book excerpt: This collection will draw attention to new ideas in both Victorian studies and in the emerging area of literature and the environment. Adopting a broad interpretation of the term ‘environment’ the work aims to draw together new approaches to Victorian texts and cultures that conceptualise and are influenced by environments ranging from rural to urban, British to Antipodean, and from the terrestrial to the aquatic. With the pressures of industrialism and the clustering of workers in urban centres, the Victorians were acutely aware that their environment was changing. Torn between nostalgia for a countryside that was in jeopardy and exhilaration at the rapidity with which their surroundings altered, the literature and culture produced by the Victorians reflects a world undergoing radical change. Colonization and assisted emigration schemes expanded the scope of the environment still further, pushing the boundaries of the ‘home’ on an unprecedented scale and introducing strange new worlds. These untamed physical environments enabled new freedoms, but also posed challenges that invited attempts to control, taxonomize and harness the natural world. Victorian Environments draws together leading and emerging international scholars for an examination of how various kinds of environments were constructed, redefined, and transformed, in British and colonial texts and cultures, with particular attention to the relationship between Australia and Britain.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the role of anonymous periodical journalism in the fashioning of women's authorial identities during the Victorian period. Alexis Easley provides a counterpoint to conventional critical accounts of the period that reduce periodical journalism to a monolithically oppressive domain of power relations - she instead emphasizes the ways in which women writers were able to exploit the gendered field of Victorian literary culture to create their own spaces of agency and meaning. Since it touches on two issues central to the study of literary history - the construction of the author and changes in media technology - this study will appeal to an audience of scholars and general readers in the fields of Victorian literature, media studies, periodicals research, gender studies, and nineteenth-century cultural history.

Book excerpt: This is a study of Henry James's changing attitudes to history as a narrative model, tracing the development from his early interest in 'scientific' historiography to the radically antihistorical character of his late works. James's use of the term 'history' was influenced by developments in nineteenth-century historiography, but was also embedded in the complex of defensive manoeuvres through which Victorian culture sought to control its anxiety about the power of fiction. Reading James's novels in the light of nineteenth-century debates about the morality of authorship and the politics of reading, Dr Jolla finds that fiction moves from being history's censored 'other' in the early works to being a valued mode of problem-solving in the later fiction. This shift may be seen as the product of James's increasing engagement with the reading practices of groups marginalized by high Victorian culture: women, the working class, other cultures, and the avant-garde. Drawing on contemporary narrative theory, and providing illuminating readings of a large number of James's novels, Roslyn Jolly has written a sophisticated and persuasive analysis of James's shifting definitions of history and fiction.

Book excerpt: Building on theories of space and place, this collection examines the global reach of Elizabeth Gaskell’s influence and places her work within the narrative of British letters and narrative identity. In keeping with the theme of progress and change, the essays follow parallel narratives that acknowledge both the angst and nostalgia produced by industrial progress and the excitement and awe occasioned by the potential of the empire.
