Download or read book Time Travel written by Nikk Effingham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are various arguments for the metaphysical impossibility of time travel. Is it impossible because objects could then be in two places at once? Or is it impossible because some objects could bring about their own existence? In this book, Nikk Effingham contends that no such argument is sound and that time travel is metaphysically possible. His main focus is on the Grandfather Paradox: the position that time travel is impossible because someone could not go back in time and kill their own grandfather before he met their grandmother. In such a case, Effingham argues that the time traveller would have the ability to do the impossible (so they could kill their grandfather) even though those impossibilities will never come about (so they won't kill their grandfather). He then explores the ramifications of this view, discussing issues in probability and decision theory. The book ends by laying out the dangers of time travel and why, even though no time machines currently exist, we should pay extra special care ensuring that nothing, no matter how small or microscopic, ever travels in time.

Book Synopsis Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy VI by : Albrecht Lau
Download or read book Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy VI written by Albrecht Lau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibrational Spectroscopy was held from May 23 to 28, 1993 in Berlin, Germany. It continued the series of biennial conferences initiated in 1982 by Prof. George Atkinson (University of Arizona) at Lake Placid, USA, followed by conferences which were chaired by Prof. Alfred Laubereau (University of Bayreuth) and Dr. Manfred Stockburger (Max-Planck-Institut, G6ttingen) at Bayreuth-Bischofsgrtin, Germany, in 1985, by Prof. Joop D.W. Van Voorst (University of Amsterdam) at Amersfoort, The Netherlands, in 1987, Prof. Thomas G. Spiro (Princeton University) at Princeton, USA, in 1989, and by Prof. Hiroaki Takahashi (Waseda University) at Tokyo, Japan, in 1991. The Berlin conference attracted 120 participants from 19 different countries, representing the most active scientific groups of the world in this field. Since 1982 the field has benefited from the development of lasers with shorter pulses and of reliable tunable light sources in the infrared. Now, the main activities are focused on the primary photo-induced processes and their excited-state dynamics and on detailed investigations in photochemistry and photobiology. The high quality of the contributions given at this conference is reflected in this proceedings volume and will provide all scientists interested in this field with current state-of-the-art results.

Book Synopsis Now and Then We Time Travel by : Fraser A. Sherman
Download or read book Now and Then We Time Travel written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 400 films and 150 television series have featured time travel--stories of rewriting history, lovers separated by centuries, journeys to the past or the (often dystopian) future. This book examines some of the roles time travel plays on screen in science fiction and fantasy. Plot synopses and credits are listed for films and TV series from England, Canada, the UK and Japan, as well as for TV and films from elsewhere in the world. Tropes and plot elements are highlighted. The author discusses philosophical questions about time travel, such as the logic of timelines, causality (what's to keep time-travelers from jumping back and correcting every mistake?) and morality (if you correct a mistake, are you still guilty of it?).
Book Synopsis The Problem of Time by : Edward Anderson
Download or read book The Problem of Time written by Edward Anderson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 917 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a treatise on time and on background independence in physics. It first considers how time is conceived of in each accepted paradigm of physics: Newtonian, special relativity, quantum mechanics (QM) and general relativity (GR). Substantial differences are moreover uncovered between what is meant by time in QM and in GR. These differences jointly source the Problem of Time: Nine interlinked facets which arise upon attempting concurrent treatment of the QM and GR paradigms, as is required in particular for a background independent theory of quantum gravity. A sizeable proportion of current quantum gravity programs - e.g. geometrodynamical and loop quantum gravity approaches to quantum GR, quantum cosmology, supergravity and M-theory - are background independent in this sense. This book's foundational topic is thus furthermore of practical relevance in the ongoing development of quantum gravity programs. This book shows moreover that eight of the nine facets of the Problem of Time already occur upon entertaining background independence in classical (rather than quantum) physics. By this development, and interpreting shape theory as modelling background independence, this book further establishes background independence as a field of study. Background independent mechanics, as well as minisuperspace (spatially homogeneous) models of GR and perturbations thereabout are used to illustrate these points. As hitherto formulated, the different facets of the Problem of Time greatly interfere with each others' attempted resolutions. This book explains how, none the less, a local resolution of the Problem of Time can be arrived at after various reconceptualizations of the facets and reformulations of their mathematical implementation. Self-contained appendices on mathematical methods for basic and foundational quantum gravity are included. Finally, this book outlines how supergravity is refreshingly different from GR as a realization of background independence, and what background independence entails at the topological level and beyond.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Time for Recognizing Human Activities by : Noureldien Hussein
Download or read book Aspects of Time for Recognizing Human Activities written by Noureldien Hussein and published by Noureldien Hussein. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis contributes to the literature of understanding and recognizing human activities in videos. More specifically, the thesis draw line between short-range atomic actions and long-range complex activities. For the classification of the latter, the mainstream approach in literature is to divide the activity into a handful of short segments, called atomic actions. Then, a neural model, such as 3D CNN, is trained to represent and classify each segment independently. Then, the activity-level classification probability scores are obtained by pooling over that of the segments. Differently, this work argues that long-range activities are better classified in full. That is to say, the neural model has to reason about the long-range activity, all at once, to better recognize it. Based on this argument, the thesis proposes different methods and neural network models for recognizing these complex activities.
