Book excerpt: In the evening of a late spring and early summer day, the thin cloud stopped in the gray sky, the breeze slowly blew through the treetops, bringing with it the sweet taste of a nearby sweets shop. Wei Chi, who had just arrived in Shanghai not long ago, was turning his head to look at the sweet shop called "Sweet". His age is no longer considered small, and he still likes to eat sweets as before. But lately he has curbed that hobby, because he already has a decayed tooth. Because it's not too painful, it affects his normal activities, so he doesn't plan to go for a filling.

Thompson's ether-fuelled, savage journey to the heart of the American Dream: We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold... And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.

Book excerpt: Passed and Present is a one-of-a-kind guide for discovering creative and meaningful ways to keep the memory of loved ones alive. Inspiring and imaginative, this bona fide "how-to” manual teaches us how to remember those we miss most, no matter how long they’ve been gone. Passed and Present is not about sadness and grieving. It is about happiness and remembering. It is possible to look forward, to live a rich and joyful life, while keeping the memory of loved ones alive. This much-needed, easy-to-use roadmap shares 85 imaginative ways to celebrate and honor family and friends we never want to forget. Chapter topics include: Repurpose With Purpose: Ideas for transforming objects and heirlooms. Discover ways to reimagine photographs, jewelry, clothing, letters, recipes, and virtually any inherited item or memento. Use Technology: Strategies for your daily, digital life. Opportunities for using computers, scanners, printers, apps, mobile devices, and websites. Not Just Holidays: Tips for remembrance any time of year, day or night, whenever you feel that pull, be it a loved one’s birthday, an anniversary, or just a moment when a memory catches you by surprise. Monthly Guide: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and other special times of year present unique challenges and opportunities. This chapter provides exciting ideas for making the most of them while keeping your loved one’s memory alive. Places to Go: Destinations around the world where reflecting and honoring loved ones is a communal activity. This concept is called Commemorative Travel. Also included are suggestions for incorporating aspects of these foreign traditions into your practices at home. Being proactive about remembering loved ones has a powerful and unexpected benefit: it can make you happier. The more we incorporate memories into our year-round lives as opposed to sectioning them off to a particular time of year, the more we can embrace the people who have passed, and all that’s good and fulfilling in our present. With beautiful illustrations throughout by artist Jennifer Orkin Lewis,Passed and Present also includes an introduction by Hope Edelman, bestselling author of Motherless Daughters.

Book excerpt: The capacity to represent and think about time, and the capacity to recollect the past are two of the most fundamental and least understood aspects of human cognition and consciousness. This book throws new light on central issues in the study of the mind by uniting, for the first time, psychological and philosophical approaches dealing with the connection between temporal representation and memory. Fifteen specially written essays by leading psychologists and philosophers investigate the way in which time is represented in memory, and the role memory plays in our ability to reasonabout time. They offer insights into current theories of memory processes and of the mechanisms and cognitive abilities underlying temporal judgements, and draw out fundamental issues concerning the phenomenology and epistemology of memory and our understanding of time. The chapters are arrangedinto four sections, each focused on one area of current research: I Keeping Track of Time, and Temporal Representation; II Memory, Awareness and the Past; III Memory and Experience; IV Knowledge and the Past: The Epistemology and Metaphysics of Time. A general introduction gives an overview of thetopics discussed and makes explicit central themes which unify the different philosophical and psychological approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every short ditty confined within this book has arrived to me through my dreaming stages. All of the people are simply figments of my dreaming imagination. They are indeed fiction yet while dreaming through them they took on an almost non-fiction realm. Cold sweats and at times racing heart beats were my companions throughout my awakening. Some left me with a sense of actually knowing who they were. On all occasions I dreamt of them only once then they returned to wherever it was they emanated from. What controlled my dreaming I may never understand? Only a few times did the dream stop one morning only to continue the following night while I slept. It was a kind of a too be continued later type scenario. While I began to dream at the exact same spot I left the previous night I became a little confused. It was if their story simply was not over until they thought it was. I understand that probably sounds a little psychotic but that's how it came down. I virtually had no control over it so I reasoned out nothing and simply dreamt. Many stories have a haunting underlying sequence of death. I know not why except for that all the people seemed to be coming back from somewhere. A sense came to me of a graveyard of which is now their permanent residence. None of them argued on my death assumption as they never really talked to me anyway. They showed me what they had to say. As with all dreams I was merely observing. Few life forms within my dreams were angry but many seemed frustrated! They would consult among themselves and at times look at me. It's very difficult to say they were looking at me for I was in the dream as my own sight. It's not hard to imagine seeing through a dream because we've all done it. Seeing is what we do in dreams and on rare occasions some people say that they have actually seen themselves. I have never seen myself in any dream yet I exist within the dream as merely sight. Kind of like: life without a mirror to reflect myself upon. Anyway, other short pages are simply word interpretations and fragments of assumptions. I simply picked then dissected words for my own personal amusement. However, at times other people within my dreams would offer their opinions relative to what I was writing. Some of these folks in my dreams didn't stick around that long, only a few seconds. A hit and run deal best describes them. These people would blatantly talk out loud for no apparent reason yet what they said made me discover some writing perspectives I never understood before. Most times what was said conveyed nicely onto the page I was writing. Again I did not argue with the flow of what we accomplished. I have to mention them for without their help I wouldn't have had much to write about. A few of the pages are dedicated to soldiers. Unfortunately the world still needs required army's. Actually the world would do rather nicely without them for it is we who not the world in need of battle. Three mentioned stories are about soldiers and unfortunately they are not stories on a female soldier. The soldiers are men within the book. One came from a very seemingly long dream and two came from partial dreaming. I'll let you decide which is which. Soldiers and death are long acquaintances that only time can control. Actually timing and a soldiers' death are one in the same. For whatever reason the death undertones arrived on my pages it became written equally as easy. I shall never understand death as I feel we never really die anyway. We're just simply removed. Many other pages reflect upon our human condition. We all go through the same feelings or emotions so I figured I would collect some basic categories and dissect the word. I feel it broke up the pages as to inflict conclusions yet keep my personal feelings at bay. This is by no means a self help book! We as a species have possibly uncountable help books at our disposal. Fine by me but little knowledge can be obtained if

Book excerpt: The concern with time permeates Freud's work, from Studies on Hysteria to Analysis Terminable and Interminable, which point out to a network of concepts that indicate Freud's complex theories on temporality. Indeed no other psychoanalytic thinker has put forward such revolutionary vision on the dimensions of time in human existence. This volume brings together some of the most important papers written on the topic by members of the British Psychoanalytical Society. In the richness of the detailed clinical discussions the ways in which patients deal with time and memory are viewed as crucial indications about their internal world and ways of relating to their objects. Disorientation regarding time tends to reflect levels of disruption to internal object relationships, inability to mourn or to experience guilt. Examples from literature and history are considered in order to examine the power of the repetition compulsion - Nachtreglichkeit - as well as how the impossibility of bearing the mental pain can lead to the creation of a timeless world.

Book excerpt: The Wheel of Time is now an original series on Prime Video, starring Rosamund Pike as Moiraine! With Robert Jordan’s untimely passing in 2007, Brandon Sanderson, the New York Times bestselling author of the Mistborn novels and the Stormlight Archive, was chosen by Jordan’s editor—his wife, Harriet McDougal—to complete the final volume in The Wheel of Time®, later expanded to three books. In A Memory of Light, the fourteenth and concluding novel in Jordan’s #1 New York Times bestselling epic fantasy series, the armies of Light gather to fight in Tarmon Gai’don, the Last Battle, to save the Westland nations from the shadow forces of the Dark One. Rand al’Thor, the Dragon Reborn, is ready to fulfill his destiny. To defeat the enemy that threatens them all, he must convince his reluctant allies that his plan—as foolhardy and dangerous as it appears—is their only chance to stop the Dark One’s ascension and secure a lasting peace. But if Rand’s course of action fails, the world will be engulfed in shadow. Across the land, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene engage in battle with Shadowspawn, Trollocs, Darkfriends, and other creatures of the Blight. Sacrifices are made, lives are lost, but victory is unassured. For when Rand confronts the Dark One in Shayol Ghul, he is bombarded with conflicting visions of the future that reveal there is more at stake for humanity than winning the war. Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time® by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amma is the creator god, the master of life and death, and he is worried. His people have always known how to take care of the spirits of the dead – the nyama – so that they don't become destructive forces among the living. But amid the chaos of the African slave trade and the brutality of American slavery, too many of his people are dying and their souls are being ignored in this new land. Amma sends a young man, Ekundayo, to a plantation in Virginia where he becomes a slave on the eve of the Civil War. Amma hopes that Ekundayo will be able to find a way to bring peace to the nyama before it is too late. But Ekundayo can see only sorrow in this land – sorrow in the ownership of people, in the slaves who have been separated from their children and spouses, in the restless spirits of the dead, and in his own forbidden relationship with his master's daughter. How Ekundayo finds a way to bring peace to both the dead and the living makes this an unforgettable journey into the slave experience and Julius Lester's most powerful work to date. Time's Memory is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.
