Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985 by Moorland Press, The Light Railways of Britain & Ireland has remained unavailable for more than twenty-five years, until now. Re-released by Pen & Sword, this is a thorough and engaging book that covers, in depth, the fascinating story of Britain's last railway development, the Rural light railways, constructed as a result of the Light Railways Act 1896. Rigorously detailed, it charts the overall history of the last great railway boom in Britain Ð the light railway boom Ð from 1896, to the beginning of the Great War in 1914. During this period a large number of narrow and standard gauge lines were constructed in both Britain and Ireland, in order to serve and open up areas in both countries that, at the time, lacked adequate transport links. This book tells the story of how these lines were constructed and why, in most cases, they eventually failed, due to post-First World War road competition. Authored by two highly acclaimed writers of transport history, this is a true testament to, and a timely reminder of, Britain's last railway development.

Book Synopsis Ticketing and Concessionary Travel on Public Transport by : Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Transport Committee
Download or read book Ticketing and Concessionary Travel on Public Transport written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Transport Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ticketing and concessionary travel on public transport, is the 5th report from the Transport Committee in 2007-08 session (HCP 84, ISBN 9780215514493). It examines the the aim of producing an integrated ticketing system across England, with the introduction of smartcard concessionary travel passes. The report inquires into the extent to which integrated ticketing on public transport has been achieved for all users; the issues regarding smartcards; arrangements for revenue protection (stopping fare-evasion) which will be affected by new forms of ticket; the impact of concessionary travel in England which is costing £1 billion per annum. The Committee has set out a number of recommendations, including: the Committee believes that the Government in terms of promoting integrated bus ticketing has achieved too little of practical value; it recommends that Traffic Commissioners be given powers to arbitrate where bus companies and local transport authorities disagree; that coach travel should be given greater consideration in future statements of public transport policy; it is imperative that the full range of tickets, including multi-modal options be available at all main outlets so that the Government's aim of fare simplification can be better acheived (see The Future of Rail, Cm. 6233, ISBN 9780101623322); that the Government needs to ensure suitable guidelines on differential pricing is included in decisions on rail fares and rail franchises with particular reference to smartcards; that the Government needs to articulate a clearer strategy for the development of integrated ticketing in general and smartcards in particular; that the Government should move towards a unified system of public transport revenue protection; that the Department of Transport should commission an evaluation of the benefits of the national scheme for free local bus travel and that national concessionary travel is properly funded. Book Synopsis South Devon & Dartmoor by : Hilary Bradt
Download or read book South Devon & Dartmoor written by Hilary Bradt and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new, thoroughly updated third edition of South Devon and Dartmoor is part of Bradt’s distinctive ‘Slow Travel’ series of guides to UK regions, offering in-depth exploration of one of England’s most popular areas. Written by resident experts Hilary Bradt, the late Janice Booth, and Gill and Alistair Campbell, it remains the essential companion to discovering not just the obvious and well-known sites, but also for getting off the beaten track and understanding what makes this gorgeous part of the country tick. Much of the information in Bradt’s South Devon and Dartmoor has appeared in no other guidebook (apart from previous editions of this book) as the authors uncover the lesser-known charms of the region, as well as different aspects of the more popular places (from the English Riviera and South Hams to Salcombe and Dartmoor), together with colourful characters from the past, folk history and literary links from Agatha Christie to Arthur Conan Doyle. The guide has a special emphasis on car-free travel: walking (this edition features a revised selection of routes, including ‘miles without stiles’ – accessible Dartmoor walks), cycling and river boats, as well as local buses (including the new Dartmoor Explorer service) and trains. This edition has a stronger emphasis on local food (both in markets and when eating out), while the authors have updated their hand-picked suggestions for places to eat and drink, and for accommodation (from idyllically located campsites to boutique B&Bs, via caravans, treehouses and haunted coaching inns). Colourful and witty writing, along with the authors’ enthusiasm for their subject, makes the guide a pleasure to read. With Bradt’s South Devon and Dartmoor, discover the region’s award-winning gin distillery and new whisky distillery; learn what really goes on at a wassail gathering; find out what you should do if you're harassed by pixies on Dartmoor; and discover unique local events like the annual Orange Race held in Totnes. Also included are entertaining and informative stories about historical characters and folklore, while small and historic village churches, with their idiosyncratic saints and intriguing carvings, are described in loving detail.
