Book excerpt: The world of laser matter interaction has known great and rapid advancements in the last few years, with a considerable increase in the number of both experimental and theoretical studies. The classical paradigm used to describe the dynamics of laser produced plasmas has been challenged by new peculiar phenomena observed experimentally, like plasma particles’ oscillations, plume splitting and self-structuring behavior during the expansion of the ejected particles. The use of multiple complementary techniques has become a requirement nowadays, as different aspects can be showcased by specific experimental approaches. To balance these non-linear effects and still remain tributary to the classical theoretical, views on laser produced plasma dynamics novel theoretical models that cover the two sides of the ablation plasma (differentiability and non-differentiability) still need to be developed. Plasma is a strongly nonlinear dynamic system, with many degrees of freedom and other symmetries, favorable for the development of ordered structures, instabilities and transitions (from ordered to chaotic states). In such contexts, we showcased research based on global and local symmetries, complexity and invariance. This special number highlighted exciting new phenomena related to laser produced plasma dynamics with the implementation of theoretical models, towards understanding the complex reality of laser matter interaction.

Book excerpt: The degree of polarisation of the light emitted from laser produced plasmas has been studied using time-resolved imaging along with time- and polarisation-resolved spectroscopy in the visible spectral range. A Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (wavelength = 1064 nm, pulse width = 14 ns) was used to ablate the target. Optical spectra were obtained using a Czerny-Turner spectrometer equipped with an intensified charge-coupled device (ICCD) readout. A Wollaston prism split the emitted radiation into orthogonally polarised states for simultaneous spectral acquisition. Polarisation anisotropy in line emission is the result of a non-statistical distribution of population amongst the available magnetic sublevels in the upper state of the transition of interest. The origin of the non-statistical distribution lies in an anisotropy in the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF) which is the most often described by a bi-Maxwellian function. For the continuum emission, it is found that the main contributor is recombination radiation and once again an EVDF anisotropy is the origin. In this case the partially preferred direction of motion of the recombining electrons is transferred into a partially preferred polarisation direction. The imaging results reveal stronger plasma emission polarisation in air than in vacuo. They also showed stronger polarisation of the continuum emission compared to line emission at higher pressure for Al (at 396.15 nm) and Al+ (466.3 nm) features. In vacuo, the degree of polarisation (P) of all charge states studied oscillates with time. It is suggested that this oscillation is a result of self-generated magnetic fields which cause the plasma itself to undergo compression and rarefraction cycles. In this case the EVDF will also oscillate and hence the degree of polarisation will do so. The magnetic field itself is thought to arise from a Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability. The effects of target geometry and incident laser polarisation on the emission were also studied. A greater effect was observed for continuum radiation compared to line emission. It is also observed that the laser polarisation has the greatest effect for oblique incidence on the target.

Pulsed laser ablation has attracted much interest over the past fifty years with experimental and theoretical work largely focussed on the study of laser produced plasmas in vacuum. The study of pulsed laser ablation has been largely motivated from a materials processing perspective, with the characterisation of thin films using pulsed laser deposition of particular interest. Another application resulting from the study of laser produced plasmas is the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for elemental composition and quantitative analysis of samples. LIBS is now a widely used technique employed in various fields including environmental analysis, forensics and biomedical applications. While much work has been carried out on pulsed ablation of materials in vacuum and gas ambient, comparatively little research has been done on ablation in liquid media. As a result, the fundamental understanding of laser produced plasmas in liquids remains insufficient. Using techniques such as time resolved imaging and spectroscopy, a full characterisation of the plasma formed in air was undertaken as a comparison to the subsequent investigation of the plasma formed in water ambient. Single pulse studies revealed information on the dynamic evolution of a laser plasma formed in the liquid phase where strong confinement and broadband emission were the main observations. Shadowgraphy measurements were performed to examine the dynamic behaviour of the cavitation bubble that eventually forms post plasma ignition. The results of time resolved optical emission measurements from within the cavitation bubble using a second laser pulse reveal for the first time the full dynamic evolution of the plasma formed in such an environment.

Book excerpt: Fourteen years after the first proposal of a fractal theoretical model to understand the dynamics of laser produced plasma, a complete image of the model is projected on a wide range of empirical data related to laser produced plasmas. The book tackles the two sides of laser produced plasmas with experimental data on a wide range of materials, from metallic alloys to geological samples and the associated mathematical model is developed in the multifractal theory of motion. A new perspective is explored in analyzing and interpreting the data collected by electrical or optical methods, focusing especially on the charged particles dynamics and the nature of fractal fluctuations and their influence during measurements as well as to the scattering process and plasma splitting phenomena, all seen through the lens of multifractal physics. The book offers the best presentation of the multifractal theoretical model for the study of transient phenomena in laser produced plasmas, which focus leads to a balanced development of the model showcasing both the flexibility and the unique vision of a multifractal mathematical apparatus.

Book excerpt: In the final section of this study, we investigate the radiative properties of tin ablation plasma as the laser irradiance is varied by more than an order of magnitude. The effect of increased focused laser energy is manifested in a weak scaling of radiation temperature, and a significant broadening of the emission lifetime at the highest laser intensities. It is found that the resulting radiation conversion efficiency is not a strong function of laser intensity within the parameter regime of this work. It is shown that agreement between experimental and simulated plasma conditions becomes progressively worse in the high-irradiance regime as the ionization and radiative transfer models play increasingly dominant roles in the plasma energetics.

Book excerpt: The determination of level populations and detailed population mechanisms in dense plasmas has become an increasingly important problem in atomic physics. In this work, the density variation of line intensities and level populations in aluminum K-shell and molybdenum and silver L-shell emission spectra have been measured from high-powered, laser-produced plasmas. For each case, the density dependence of the observed line emission is due to the effect of high frequency electron-ion collisions on metastable levels. The density dependent line intensities vary greatly in laser-produced plasmas and can be used to extract detailed information concerning the population kinetics and level populations of the ions. The laser-plasmas had to be fully characterized in order to clearly compare the observed density dependence with atomic theory predictions. This has been achieved through the combined use of new diagnostic instruments and microdot targets which provided simultaneously space, time, and spectrally resolved data. The plasma temperatures were determined from the slope of the hydrogen-like recombination continuum. The time resolved electron density profiles were measured using multiple frame holographic interferometry. Thus, the density dependence of K-shell spectral lines could be clearly examined, independent of assumptions concerning the dynamics of the plasma. In aluminum, the electron density dependence of various helium-like line intensity ratios were measured. Standard collisional radiative equilibrium models fail to account for the observed density dependence measured for the ''He/sub .cap alpha.//IC'' ratio. Instead, a quasi-steady state atomic model based on a purely recombining plasma is shown to accurately predict the measured density dependence. This same recombining plasma calculation successfully models the density dependence of the high-n ''He/sub .gamma.//He/sub .beta./'' and ''He/sub delta//He/sub .beta./'' helium-like resonance line intensity ratios.

Book excerpt: The recent developement of high power lasers, delivering femtosecond pulses of 20 2 intensities up to 10 W/cm , has led to the discovery of new phenomena in laser interactions with matter. At these enormous laser intensities, atoms, and molecules are exposed to extreme conditions and new phenomena occur, such as the very rapid multi photon ionization of atomic systems, the emission by these systems of very high order harmonics of the exciting laser light, the Coulomb explosion of molecules, and the acceleration of electrons close to the velocity of light. These phenomena generate new behaviour of bulk matter in intense laser fields, with great potential for wide ranging applications which include the study of ultra-fast processes, the development of high-frequency lasers, and the investigation of the properties of plasmas and condensed matter under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. In particular, the concept of the "fast ignitor" approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) has been proposed, which is based on the separation of the compression and the ignition phases in laser-driven ICF. The aim of this course on "Atom, Solids and Plasmas in Super-Intense Laser fields" was to bring together senior researchers and students in atomic and molecular physics, laser physics, condensed matter and plasma physics, in order to review recent developments in high-intensity laser-matter interactions. The course was held at the Ettore Majorana International Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice from July 8 to July 14,2000.
