Book excerpt: Characteristics of laser plasmas used for pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of thin films are examined with four in situ diagnostic techniques: Optical emission spectroscopy, optical absorption spectroscopy, ion probe studies, and gated ICCD (intensified charge-coupled-device array) fast photography. These four techniques are complementary and permit simultaneous views of the transport of ions, excited states, ground state neutrals and ions, and hot particulates following KrF laser ablation of YBCO, BN, graphite and Si in vacuum and background gases. The implementation and advantages of the four techniques are first described in order to introduce the key features of laser plasmas for pulsed laser deposition. Aspects of the interaction of the ablation plume with background gases (i.e., thermalization, attenuation, shock formation) and the collision of the plasma plume with the substrate heater are then summarized. The techniques of fast ICCD photography and gated photon counting are then applied to investigate the temperature, velocity, and spatial distribution of hot particles generated during KrF ablation of YBCO, BN, Si and graphite. Finally, key features of fast imaging of the laser ablation of graphite into high pressure rare gases are presented in order to elucidate internal reflected shocks within the plume, redeposition of material on a surface, and formation of hot nanoparticles within the plume.

Pulsed laser ablation has attracted much interest over the past fifty years with experimental and theoretical work largely focussed on the study of laser produced plasmas in vacuum. The study of pulsed laser ablation has been largely motivated from a materials processing perspective, with the characterisation of thin films using pulsed laser deposition of particular interest. Another application resulting from the study of laser produced plasmas is the use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for elemental composition and quantitative analysis of samples. LIBS is now a widely used technique employed in various fields including environmental analysis, forensics and biomedical applications. While much work has been carried out on pulsed ablation of materials in vacuum and gas ambient, comparatively little research has been done on ablation in liquid media. As a result, the fundamental understanding of laser produced plasmas in liquids remains insufficient. Using techniques such as time resolved imaging and spectroscopy, a full characterisation of the plasma formed in air was undertaken as a comparison to the subsequent investigation of the plasma formed in water ambient. Single pulse studies revealed information on the dynamic evolution of a laser plasma formed in the liquid phase where strong confinement and broadband emission were the main observations. Shadowgraphy measurements were performed to examine the dynamic behaviour of the cavitation bubble that eventually forms post plasma ignition. The results of time resolved optical emission measurements from within the cavitation bubble using a second laser pulse reveal for the first time the full dynamic evolution of the plasma formed in such an environment.

The produced plasma emits neutrals, clusters, ions, electrons and photons. Plasma properties depend on the laser pulse duration, energy, wavelength, focusing, target nature and irradiation conditions. Plasma expands in vacuum with supersonic velocity and may accelerate heavy ions, with charge states higher than 50+, at energies higher than 10 MeV. This book presents and discusses possible applications, such as ion injection in ECR ion sources, ion implantation, ion post-acceleration and thin film deposition by the PLD technique. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings® (ISTP® / ISI Proceedings)• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)• CC Proceedings — Engineering & Physical Sciences

Book excerpt: Among the many intense light sources, excimer lasers have a unique set of properties that place them at the forefront of tooling for material processing. Their extreme versatility means that they can be used in many areas of materials science and medicine. But three conditions need to be fulfilled in order that their versatility be truly appreciated and exploited: the characteristics and limitations of the sources must be known; the basic excimer laser processes should become reasonably widely known; and problems in search of a solution should be clearly identified. Excimer Lasers covers all three of these points in an instructive and logical way. Probably for the first time, both instrumental and fundamental aspects of excimer laser interaction with matter are presented side-by-side, with examples drawn from the widest range of materials. The articles gathered here are tutorial in their nature, thus making them suitable for a wide readership, from recent graduates and postgraduate students to those established scientists entering the field, all of whom could not find a better, nor more authoritative work with which to start their reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive review of the entire field of laser micro and nano processing, including not only a detailed introduction to individual laser processing techniques but also the fundamentals of laser-matter interaction and lasers, optics, equipment, diagnostics, as well as monitoring and measurement techniques for laser processing. Consisting of 11 sections, each composed of 4 to 6 chapters written by leading experts in the relevant field. Each main part of the handbook is supervised by its own part editor(s) so that high-quality content as well as completeness are assured. The book provides essential scientific and technical information to researchers and engineers already working in the field as well as students and young scientists planning to work in the area in the future. Lasers found application in materials processing practically since their invention in 1960, and are currently used widely in manufacturing. The main driving force behind this fact is that the lasers can provide unique solutions in material processing with high quality, high efficiency, high flexibility, high resolution, versatility and low environmental load. Macro-processing based on thermal process using infrared lasers such as CO2 lasers has been the mainstream in the early stages, while research and development of micro- and nano-processing are becoming increasingly more active as short wavelength and/or short pulse width lasers have been developed. In particular, recent advances in ultrafast lasers have opened up a new avenue to laser material processing due to the capabilities of ultrahigh precision micro- and nanofabrication of diverse materials. This handbook is the first book covering the basics, the state-of-the-art and important applications of the dynamic and rapidly expanding discipline of laser micro- and nanoengineering. This comprehensive source makes readers familiar with a broad spectrum of approaches to solve all relevant problems in science and technology. This handbook is the ultimate desk reference for all people working in the field.

Book excerpt: Laser ablation methods exhibit a fast development in various application fields, as materials processing, medicine, nuclear fusion or analytical sciences. Despite important advances in the knowledge of the complex laser-matter interactions involved in this process, there is still need for better fundamental understanding and modeling. The aim of this work was to experimentally and theoretically investigate the dynamics of transient plasmas generated by laser ablation in various regimes (ns, ps, fs), and to try to correlate the observed behavior with the physical properties of the ablated materials We implemented space- and time-resolved optical, spectroscopic and electrical methods for the study of single-component metallic targets and of complex chalcogenide targets. This led to a space-time mapping of the main plasma parameters. The study performed in actual Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) conditions revealed some peculiar effects like ionic oscillations or plume reflection at the substrate. A compact fractal hydrodynamic model was developed to simulate the laser-produced plasma dynamics. The theoretical model accurately describes the spatial and temporal evolution of the main plasma parameters (electronic temperature, expansion velocities, particle number density, Debye length, plasma potential). We report for the first time empirical relations connecting these plasma parameters with the physical properties (electrical/thermal conductivity, atomic mass, heat of vaporization) of the target. These relationships transcend all three ablation regimes (ns, ps, fs).

Book excerpt: Understanding the underline fundamental mechanism behind experimental and industrial technologies embodies one of the foundations of the advances and tailoring new materials. With the pulsed laser deposition being one of the key techniques for obtaining complex biocompatible materials with controllable stoichiometry, there is need for experimental and theoretical advancements towards understanding the dynamics of multi component plasmas. Here we investigate the laser ablation process on Cu-Mn-Al and Fe-Mn-Si by means of space-and time-resolved optical emission spectroscopy and fast camera imaging. In a fractal paradigm the space,Äìtime homographic transformations were correlated with the global dynamics of the ablation plasmas.
