Book excerpt: In April 2005, two days after my seventy-sixth birthday, I became the Protestant chaplain at California Correctional Center in Susanville, California. The warden hired me for the job of creating a faith-based rehabilitation program, taught by inmates, supported by unpaid outside volunteers. It was anticipated that it could be a rehabilitation program for the twenty-six state prisons in California, as well a challenge for the myriad jails and prisons throughout the United States. To overcome the warehousing model of incarcerating and housing inmates in prisons throughout most prison systems, it is imperative that inexpensive programs be developed to counteract the chilling effect of sparse and ineffective free-time support for the inmate population. California recidivism rates in state prisons exceed 80 percent. It is expected that its much the same across the United States. Something needs to be done to counteract this, and the CCC model is one attempt to do it. Included in this book are anecdotal examples and testimonies that point to this possibility. The challenges, or barrels, related in this attempt to change the recidivism rate at one institution tell us it wont be easy. New ideas are hard to come by in prison; the old, and tried and failed to often have the upper hand in the operation of state prisons in California. . As you follow my story, you will see how and who are the advocates and foes of change in the way prisons are operated. The story told here can benefit the families of the more than one million inmates in the prisons and jails in America. It can provide insights into the prison life for the students in the correctional curriculums in the colleges and universities of America. If the book were read by the personnel in the administration of state prisons, they might be challenged to work to change the climate in their jails and prisons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Marine’s highly personal memoir reliving the hellish days of a pivotal conflict of the Vietnam War Con Thien, located only two miles from the demilitarized zone dividing North and South Vietnam, was a United States Marine Corps firebase that was the scene of fierce combat for months on end during 1967. Staving off attacks and ambushes while suffering from ineffectual leadership from Washington as well as media onslaughts, courageous American Marines protected this crucial piece of land at all costs. They would hold Con Thien, but many paid the ultimate price. By the end of the war, more than 1,400 Marines had died and more than 9,000 sustained injuries defending the “Hill of Angels.” For eight months, James P. Coan’s five-tank platoon was assigned to Con Thien while attached to various Marine infantry battalions. A novice second lieutenant at the time, the author kept a diary recording the thoughts, fears, and frustrations that accompanied his life on “The Hill.” Time in the Barrel: A Marine’s Account of the Battle for Con Thien offers an authentic firsthand account of the daily nightmare that was Con Thien. An enticing and fascinating read featuring authentic depictions of combat, it allows readers to fully grasp the enormity of the fierce struggle for Con Thien. The defenders of Con Thien were bombarded with hundreds of rounds of incoming rockets, mortars, and artillery that pounded the beleaguered outpost daily. Monsoon downpours turned the red laterite clay soil into a morass of oozing mud, flooded bunkers and trenches, and made Con Thien a living hell. .Being at Con Thien came to be ruefully referred to by the Marines stationed there as "time in the barrel” because they were targets as easy as fish in a barrel. More than a retelling of military movements, Coan’s engrossing narratives focus on the sheer sacrifice and misery of one Marine’s experience in Vietnam. Through his eyes, we experience the abysmal conditions the Marines endured, from monsoon rainstorms to the constant threat of impending attack. Climatic moments in history are captured through the rare, personal perspective of one particularly astute and observant participant.

Book excerpt: SEVENY SEVEN Seveny-Seven was what the Disc Jockeys, slovenly, called the year of seventy seven, the year after the heat wave and the year before 'New Wave'. Nineteen Seventy Seven was the year of the Queen's Jubilee and the zenith of the Punk Rock revolution. It was time of fear and uncertainty. The oil crisis had knocked the economy off course, the cold war was at its height, there was doom and gloom all around. What did 1977 mean to adolescents? One teenager, Michael Fitzalan was keen to discover new music and celebrate his fifteenth birthday with a book published and a girl on his arm. An excruciatingly frank account of life in 1970's London that will resonate with teenagers now. This is a wonderful romp through a decade defining year.

David Deardorff and Kathryn Wadsworth present 100 home projects designed to inspire and empower anyone who wants to help save our native flora and fauna in the face of habitat loss and climate change. This book focuses on saving creatures and plants that are especially vulnerable but that can be successfully helped by our efforts, such as bees, frogs, butterflies, birds, trees, and wildflowers. Each project meets four crucial criteria: (1) it will make a significant difference to the survival of the species, (2) has a high likelihood of success, (3) is easy to implement, and (4) is family-friendly. The book raises awareness of endangered species that readers can help by undertaking projects unique to their bioregion. Examples include building an amphibian house for salamanders, raising tadpoles, creating nesting sites for bees, and much more. Saving Nature One Yard at a Time is an inspirational and practical compendium that will give readers the knowledge and tools they need to take an active role in nurturing the world around us, no matter we live.
