Book excerpt: Patients are dying at St. Raphael's Hospital, and a young, meddling x-ray tech is the only person standing in the way of a corrupt healthcare system in this radioactive medical thriller. Claire Neuman uses her radiographic skills to detect disease. When she uncovers a mysterious trend of surgical errors, Claire's powers of detection are the only thing that can save her patients. This nuclear bomb of a novel offers a suspense-filled adventure in x-ray technology and the horrors of patient care gone wrong. What Amazon readers are saying about Time, Distance, and Shielding: ★★★★★ 'Loved this book. It combines all of the things I enjoy, radiology, teaching, and thrillers. I highly recommend to any X-Ray tech or tech in training. The suspense kept me interested from start to finish.' ★★★★★ 'I know these people, having worked with techs for 42 years. This story really strikes a chord, not only for people who work in radiology. Many dedicated workers in hospitals who work their tails off but get little respect will relate. The story is beautifully written. In the middle of what one might start to think are filler paragraphs, there are many great lines such as "Surgical teams often arrive at that place where they can finish each other's sentences and marriages..."' ★★★★★ 'Very good book regarding radiology world. Keep my interest peaked. Definitely will be waiting for the second book. Can't wait.'

Book excerpt: Due to the recent global pandemic, educators of science and technology have had to pivot and adapt their delivery to create alternative virtual means of delivery. The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced a rapid change in teaching and learning in higher education. It is reshaping curriculum demands, the 21st century digital competence challenges, and learning technologies. These changes in education are likely to endure well past the COVID-19 pandemic, making it crucial for educators to consider teaching and learning under the perspectives of digital education and innovation. Advancing STEM Education and Innovation in a Time of Distance Learning highlights the contemporary trends and challenges in science, technology, mathematics, and engineering education. The chapters present findings and discussions of relevant research studies and theoretical frameworks for the provision of science, technology, engineering, and technical subjects. It not only presents successful practice examples from before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also provides useful information to assist educators in understanding the demands and challenges of digital education. Covering topics such as ethnically diverse students, foreign language learning, and mobile gamification, this premier reference source is an essential resource for educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, librarians, government officials, researchers, and academicians.

Book excerpt: Psychotherapy across distance and time, from Freud’s treatments by mail to crisis hotlines, radio call-ins, chatbots, and Zoom sessions. Therapy has long understood itself as taking place in a room, with two (or more) people engaged in person-to-person conversation. And yet, starting with Freud’s treatments by mail, psychotherapy has operated through multiple communication technologies and media. These have included advice columns, radio broadcasts, crisis hotlines, video, personal computers, and mobile phones; the therapists (broadly defined) can be professional or untrained, strangers or chatbots. In The Distance Cure, Hannah Zeavin proposes a reconfiguration of the traditional therapeutic dyad of therapist and patient as a triad: therapist, patient, and communication technology. Zeavin tracks the history of teletherapy (understood as a therapeutic interaction over distance) and its metamorphosis from a model of cure to one of contingent help. She describes its initial use in ongoing care, its role in crisis intervention and symptom management, and our pandemic-mandated reliance on regular Zoom sessions. Her account of the “distanced intimacy” of the therapeutic relationship offers a powerful rejoinder to the notion that contact across distance (or screens) is always less useful, or useless, to the person seeking therapeutic treatment or connection. At the same time, these modes of care can quickly become a backdoor for surveillance and disrupt ethical standards important to the therapeutic relationship. The history of the conventional therapeutic scenario cannot be told in isolation from its shadow form, teletherapy. Therapy, Zeavin tells us, was never just a “talking cure”; it has always been a communication cure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-listed for the 2016 PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award "An important book that provides insight into key new developments in our understanding of the nature of space, time and the universe. It will repay careful study." --John Gribbin, The Wall Street Journal "An endlessly surprising foray into the current mother of physics' many knotty mysteries, the solving of which may unveil the weirdness of quantum particles, black holes, and the essential unity of nature." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) What is space? It isn't a question that most of us normally ask. Space is the venue of physics; it's where things exist, where they move and take shape. Yet over the past few decades, physicists have discovered a phenomenon that operates outside the confines of space and time: nonlocality-the ability of two particles to act in harmony no matter how far apart they may be. It appears to be almost magical. Einstein grappled with this oddity and couldn't come to terms with it, describing it as "spooky action at a distance." More recently, the mystery has deepened as other forms of nonlocality have been uncovered. This strange occurrence, which has direct connections to black holes, particle collisions, and even the workings of gravity, holds the potential to undermine our most basic understandings of physical reality. If space isn't what we thought it was, then what is it? In Spooky Action at a Distance, George Musser sets out to answer that question, offering a provocative exploration of nonlocality and a celebration of the scientists who are trying to explain it. Musser guides us on an epic journey into the lives of experimental physicists observing particles acting in tandem, astronomers finding galaxies that look statistically identical, and cosmologists hoping to unravel the paradoxes surrounding the big bang. He traces the often contentious debates over nonlocality through major discoveries and disruptions of the twentieth century and shows how scientists faced with the same undisputed experimental evidence develop wildly different explanations for that evidence. Their conclusions challenge our understanding of not only space and time but also the origins of the universe-and they suggest a new grand unified theory of physics. Delightfully readable, Spooky Action at a Distance is a mind-bending voyage to the frontiers of modern physics that will change the way we think about reality.

Book excerpt: This book conducts effective research on data-driven Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), and accordingly presents many novel feature extraction methods by time series analysis and signal processing, to extract reliable damage sensitive features from vibration responses. In this regard, some limitations of time series modeling are dealt with. For decision-making, innovative distance-based novelty detection techniques are presented to detect, locate, and quantify different damage scenarios. The performance of the presented methods is demonstrated via laboratory and full-scale structures along with several comparative studies. The main target audience of the book includes scholars, graduate students working on SHM via statistical pattern recognition in terms of feature extraction and classification for damage diagnosis under environmental and operational variations; it would also be beneficial for practicing engineers whose work involves these topics.
