Martin, on the running board, pushed FDR down, Eleanor following suit. Chloe shot the driver in the first truck. The truck swerved, tipped over. Chloe was shooting at the driver of the second truck, but it had bullet-proof glass. She kept firing, but the truck kept coming. ÒDrive!Ó Martin shouted. The driver squealed the wheels. The four hung on, protecting FDR. The truck was following with men leaning out the back, firing. Tommy guns didnÕt have much range, but they could kill close up. Martin shot the tire under the driver. The tire was tough, but finally it went. The truck swerved and rolled. Martin saw men pulling themselves out of the the truck. Chloe told the driver to get behind the green car and stop. She told Daniel and Joseph to help get Roosevelt into the ÒgangsterÓ car. They were going to make certain FDR became president, no matter what.

Book excerpt: The remarkable untold story of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the five extraordinary men he used to pull America into World War II In the dark days between Hitler’s invasion of Poland in September 1939 and Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Franklin D. Roosevelt sent five remarkable men on dramatic and dangerous missions to Europe. The missions were highly unorthodox and they confounded and infuriated diplomats on both sides of the Atlantic. Their importance is little understood to this day. In fact, they were crucial to the course of the Second World War. The envoys were magnificent, unforgettable characters. First off the mark was Sumner Welles, the chilly, patrician under secretary of state, later ruined by his sexual misdemeanors, who was dispatched by FDR on a tour of European capitals in the spring of 1940. In summer of that year, after the fall of France, William “Wild Bill” Donovan—war hero and future spymaster—visited a lonely United Kingdom at the president’s behest to determine whether she could hold out against the Nazis. Donovan’s report helped convince FDR that Britain was worth backing. After he won an unprecedented third term in November 1940, Roosevelt threw a lifeline to the United Kingdom in the form of Lend-Lease and dispatched three men to help secure it. Harry Hopkins, the frail social worker and presidential confidant, was sent to explain Lend-Lease to Winston Churchill. Averell Harriman, a handsome, ambitious railroad heir, served as FDR’s man in London, expediting Lend-Lease aid and romancing Churchill’s daughter-in-law. Roosevelt even put to work his rumpled, charismatic opponent in the 1940 presidential election, Wendell Willkie, whose visit lifted British morale and won wary Americans over to the cause. Finally, in the aftermath of Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union, Hopkins returned to London to confer with Churchill and traveled to Moscow to meet with Joseph Stalin. This final mission gave Roosevelt the confidence to bet on the Soviet Union. The envoys’ missions took them into the middle of the war and exposed them to the leading figures of the age. Taken together, they plot the arc of America’s trans¬formation from a divided and hesitant middle power into the global leader. At the center of everything, of course, was FDR himself, who moved his envoys around the globe with skill and élan. We often think of Harry S. Truman, George Marshall, Dean Acheson, and George F. Kennan as the authors of America’s global primacy in the second half of the twentieth century. But all their achievements were enabled by the earlier work of Roosevelt and his representatives, who took the United States into the war and, by defeating domestic isolationists and foreign enemies, into the world. In these two years, America turned. FDR and his envoys were responsible for the turn. Drawing on vast archival research, Rendezvous with Destiny is narrative history at its most delightful, stirring, and important.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A first-rate work of insider history . . . A monumental accomplishment.” —National Review The election that changed everything: Craig Shirley’s masterful account of the 1980 presidential campaign reveals how a race judged “too close to call” as late as Election Day became a Reagan landslide—and altered the course of history. To write Rendezvous with Destiny, Shirley gained unprecedented access to 1980 campaign files and interviewed more than 150 insiders—from Reagan’s closest advisers and family members to Jimmy Carter himself. His gripping account follows Reagan’s unlikely path from his bitter defeat on the floor of the 1976 Republican convention, through his underreported “wilderness years,” through grueling primary fights in which he knocked out several Republican heavyweights, through an often-nasty general election campaign complicated by the presence of a third-party candidate (not to mention the looming shadow of Ted Kennedy), to Reagan’s astounding victory on Election Night in 1980. Shirley’s years of intensive research have enabled him to relate countless untold stories—including, at long last, the solution to one of the most enduring mysteries in politics: just how Reagan’s campaign got hold of Carter’s debate briefing books.
Book Synopsis The Fourth Turning by : William Strauss
Download or read book The Fourth Turning written by William Strauss and published by Crown. This book was released on 1997-12-29 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Discover the game-changing theory of the cycles of history and what past generations can teach us about living through times of upheaval—with deep insights into the roles that Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials have to play—now with a new preface by Neil Howe. First comes a High, a period of confident expansion. Next comes an Awakening, a time of spiritual exploration and rebellion. Then comes an Unraveling, in which individualism triumphs over crumbling institutions. Last comes a Crisis—the Fourth Turning—when society passes through a great and perilous gate in history. William Strauss and Neil Howe will change the way you see the world—and your place in it. With blazing originality, The Fourth Turning illuminates the past, explains the present, and reimagines the future. Most remarkably, it offers an utterly persuasive prophecy about how America’s past will predict what comes next. Strauss and Howe base this vision on a provocative theory of American history. The authors look back five hundred years and uncover a distinct pattern: Modern history moves in cycles, each one lasting about the length of a long human life, each composed of four twenty-year eras—or “turnings”—that comprise history’s seasonal rhythm of growth, maturation, entropy, and rebirth. Illustrating this cycle through a brilliant analysis of the post–World War II period, The Fourth Turning offers bold predictions about how all of us can prepare, individually and collectively, for this rendezvous with destiny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be wary, ye whoÉ Sorry. Just wanted to warn you up front that some of these stories donÕt have conclusions. Most of them do, but some I just never could finish. Oh, yeah, and some of them are parts of series that are here published alone because I just was unable to find the other stories. I swore when I was young that that would never happen to me. It did. IÕm dealing with it. The reason that such stories Ñ those without endings and those for which there are other, connected stories Ñ is that, well, IÕm getting old. I wanted to collect the majority of my writings before IÕm dead. Some of these are very early stories. The earliest, I believe, is ÒCounterterrorist.Ó Yes, the main characterÕs name is Jack, but it was written many years Ñ decades Ñ before Jack Bauer, counterterrorist, made it to TV in 24. That should be obvious, but I thought IÕd mention it. Just try to enjoy the stories.
Download or read book Secret Affairs written by Irwin Gellman and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1995. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was paralyzed from the waist down, but he concealed the extent of his disability from a public that was never permitted to see him in a wheelchair. FDR's Secretary of State was old and frail, debilitated by a highly contagious and usually fatal disease that was as closely guarded a state secret as his wife's Jewish ancestry. The undersecretary was a pompous and aloof man who married three times but, when intoxicated, preferred sex with railroad porters, shoeshine boys, and cabdrivers. These three legendary figures—Franklin Roosevelt, Cordell Hull, and Sumner Welles—not only concealed such secrets for more than a decade but did so while directing United States foreign policy during some of the most perilous events in the nation's history. Irwin Gellman brings to light startling new information about the intrigues, deceptions, and behind-the-scenes power struggles that influenced America's role in World War II and left their mark on world events, for good or ill, in the half-century that followed. Gellman had unprecedented access to previously unavailable documents, including Hull's confidential medical records, unpublished manuscripts of Drew Pearson and R. Walton Moore, and Sumner Welles's FBI file. Gellman concludes that while Roosevelt, Hull, and Welles usually agreed on foreign policy matters, the events that molded each man's character remained a mystery to the others. Their failure to cope with their secret affairs—to subordinate their personal concerns to the higher good of the nation—eventually destroyed much of what they hoped would be their legacy. Roosevelt never explained his objectives to his vice president, Harry Truman, or to anyone else. Hull never groomed a successor, and Welles kept his foreign assignations as classified as his sexual orientation. Gellman tells the dramatic story of how three Americans—despite private demons and bitter animosities—could work together to lead their nation to victory against fascism. —William T. Walker, Presidential Studies Quarterly

I dashed across the lawn, into The Lab and up the stairs. The bookcase was locked. Most of our books anyone can look at. Some, we donÕt think would be wise to let out. I fumbled the key chain, looking for the tiny key that could open the door. I managed to get it near the keyhole when the electricity died. Cara may curse my pipe, but right then, I think sheÕd have been glad I had a lighter. The lighter helped me again. The deep, old books were a window to the past. We had read few. That would entail things like dying horrible deaths. Instead, we had a collection of Òabout books, Ó essays written anywhere from last year to a thousand years ago. The one I was looking for was deep red, 'AichlanÕs Deimos.' In it I hoped to sort out how to send Xith back to wherever the hell it came from before it ate Lily Dale, or whatever it does.

Book excerpt: Martin sat in an old office chair. It didn't seem odd in the New Old West saloon. End o' the world and all, he thought. He knew them the moment they walked in. The man and woman were dressed right, but out of place. "Evenin'" Martin said casually. "We understand you buy new technology," the man said The lanky woman reached under her poncho and held a small black rectangular object out to him. Martin looked at it, said, "OK, I give up. What's it do?" The man dropped something, and there was a blinding explosion. "Flash-bang," Martin thought as he holstered his pistol. He scooped up the black rectangle, shoved it in his pocket and left. Back at his house Martin, looked at the device, set his drink down. He pulled out a cheroot, lit it, examined the device closely. His thumb ran along the flat surface and everything got loud suddenly. There was a blast and white light and the room disappeared. Martin felt rapid movement, said, "Another mission," and was gone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Realm of the King is volume four of my complete shorter fiction collection. It contains some finished stories, but largely it contains a collection of unfinished pieces. Either I got stuck at certain points of the pieces or just stopped writing them. I first collected some unfinished tales in my chapbook titled 'Tales Without End Vol. 1' way back in 1995. It was, in fact, one of the last few chapbooks I published. This volume is an attempt to get most of my unfinished tales into one book. Who knows? I may complete some or all of them one day, or I may not. In any event, they are here for what theyÕre worth.

Book excerpt: ÒJust like me to never have any money when the end of the world comes, Ó thought Martin Fahy as he walked through the bitter, ceaseless rain. He laughed slightly and wondered what he was going to do now. Sure, he had been the one who always knew The End was coming soon, but he just couldnÕt convince anyone else. He wasnÕt a religious fanatic or anything and his predictions of the coming doom had nothing to do with apocalyptic visions or cultist beliefs. It was based largely on his continual observation of scientific predictions. And now, it all was happening. Fahy realized what heÕd always said was his prime philosophy still was true: The only way out is throughÉ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photographer and writer Shawn M. Tomlinson, author of the Photo Curmudgeon column and books, makes creating black and white and toned photos simple with this how-to guide. "In a world dominated by colorful images, black and white and toned photographs can stand out as something different, something somehow more beautiful," Tomlinson writes. "To really work in the 21st century, a black and white or toned image must be special. It must express something not there in color. There must be a reason to change the reality of the image by turning it grayscale, not just that you can. All that said, there is absolutely nothing like a truly great black and white image." The author covers the basics of B&W and toned photos including processing techniques, printing, presentation in eBooks, and much more. This is an expanded and revised edition of the original eBook and trade paperback editions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everybody gives out tips for better photography. Well, maybe not your boss or the guy who fixes your furnace (although mine does), but most photography websites, forums and magazines fill their pages with tips for becoming a better photographer. There's a reason there are so many tips out there: photographers want them. On the other hand, we who have some little knowledge like to give them, too. Most people like to pass on what they've learned. I've been a photographer for nearly four decades. I've published thousands of photographs. I write a photography column (Photo Curmudgeon). I love photography. I read tips from other photographers often. Sometimes, I read something new, or at least put in a new way so that it sparks an idea. No one can tell you how to develop your photographer's eye. Only you can figure that out. What I can do is give you some pointers about how to develop your own photographer's eye, and how to get better as a photographer.

This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lot has changed since I wrote and published this first volume of what became this guide series. One thing hasnÕt. I still have the same enthusiasm and joy in photography I had way back at the beginning of the series. I have a lot more knowledge and experience now and, occasionally even get close to taking good photographs. ThatÕs the thing, see. I didnÕt know a lot when I originally wrote this guide. I had been working in photography since 1982 professionally. Everything I knew, pretty much, was self-taught. In general, thatÕs still true. ThereÕs no need for you to do it all by yourself, too, though. This book and this series are meant to help you get going with the basics fast. Yes, OK, I tend to relate my own experiences, but that, too, is meant to help you avoid some basic mistakes I made. And, perhaps, I write in a tad too friendly manner, but think of it as sitting down with me to have a friendly talk about a passion we share: Photography!
