It will also be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil and structural engineering. It provides a step-by-step approach to the design of all of the commonly used timber elements and connections using solid timber, glued laminated timber or wood based structural products, and incorporates the requirements of the UK National Annex. It covers: strength and stiffness properties of timber and its reconstituted and engineered products key requirements of Eurocode 0, Eurocode 1 and Eurocode 5 – Part 1-1 design of beams and columns of solid timber, glued laminated, composite and thin-webbed sections lateral stability requirements of timber structures design of mechanical connections subjected to lateral and/or axial forces design of moment resisting rigid and semi-rigid connections racking design of multi-storey platform framed walls Featuring numerous detailed worked examples, the second edition has been thoroughly updated and includes information on the consequences of amendments and revisions to EC5 published since the first edition, and the significant additional requirements of BSI non contradictory, complimentary information document (PD 6693-1-1) relating to EC5. The new edition also includes a new section on axial stress conditions in composite sections, covering combined axial and bending stress conditions and reference to the major revisions to the design procedure for glued laminated timber.

Book excerpt: A necessary purchase for level 1 and 2 undergraduates studying building/ construction materials modules, Materials for Architects and Builders provides an introduction to the broad range of materials used within the construction industry and contains information pertaining to their manufacture, key physical properties, specification and uses. Construction Materials is a core module on all undergraduate and diploma construction-related courses and this established textbook is illustrated in colour throughout with many photographs and diagrams to help students understand the key principles. This new edition has been completely revised and updated to include the latest developments in materials, appropriate technologies and relevant legislation. The current concern for the ecological effects of building construction and lifetime use are reflected in the emphasis given to sustainability and recycling. An additional chapter on sustainability and governmental carbon targets reinforces this issue.

Book excerpt: Recent progress in enhancing and refining the performance and properties of wood composites by chemical and thermal modification and the application of smart multi-functional coatings have made them a particular area of interest for researchers. Wood Composites comprehensively reviews the whole field of wood composites, with particular focus on their materials, applications and engineering and scientific advances, including solutions inspired biomimetrically by the structure of wood and wood composites. Part One covers the materials used for wood composites and examines wood microstructure, and wood processing and adhesives for wood composites. Part Two explores the many applications of wood composites, for example plywood, fibreboard, chipboard, glulam, cross-laminated timber, I-beams and wood-polymer composites. The final part investigates advances in wood composites and looks at the preservation and modification of wood composites, environmental impacts and legislative obligations, nano-coatings and plasma treatment, biomimetic composite materials, the integration of wood composites with other materials and carbonized and mineralized wood composites. - Comprehensively reviews the entire field of wood composites in a single volume - Examines recent progress in enhancing and refining the performance and properties of wood composites by chemical and thermal modification and the application of smart multi-functional coatings - Explores the range of wood composites, including both new and traditional products

Book excerpt: So far in the twenty-first century, there have been many developments in our understanding of materials’ behaviour and in their technology and use. This new edition has been expanded to cover recent developments such as the use of glass as a structural material. It also now examines the contribution that material selection makes to sustainable construction practice, considering the availability of raw materials, production, recycling and reuse, which all contribute to the life cycle assessment of structures. As well as being brought up-to-date with current usage and performance standards, each section now also contains an extra chapter on recycling. Covers the following materials: metals concrete ceramics (including bricks and masonry) polymers fibre composites bituminous materials timber glass. This new edition maintains our familiar and accessible format, starting with fundamental principles and continuing with a section on each of the major groups of materials. It gives you a clear and comprehensive perspective on the whole range of materials used in modern construction. A must have for Civil and Structural engineering students, and for students of architecture, surveying or construction on courses which require an understanding of materials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wood is a natural building material: if used in building elements, it can play structural, functional and aesthetic roles at the same time. The use of wood in buildings, which goes back to the oldest of times, is now experiencing a period of strong expansion in virtue of the sustainable dimension of wood buildings from the environmental, economic and social standpoints. However, its use as an engineering material calls for constant development of theoretical and experimental research to respond properly to the issues involved in this. In the single chapters written by experts in different fields, the book aims to contribute to knowledge in the application of wood in the building industry.

Book excerpt: The topic of on site diagnostics for historical, monumental and vernacular architecture is characterized by a twofold difficulty, partially due to a sort of hiatus between scientific community and professional system. In fact, on one side universities and research centres produce advanced technologies, methodologies and procedures, but not always adequately disseminated among professionals and sometimes inconsistent with some relevant criteria, such as feasibility and cost-effectiveness. On the other side, professionals, in the field of on site diagnostics for historical architectures, are holder of a heritage, made of experiences and practice, which often is not enough shared and sometimes is contrasting with the limited possibility to evaluate and verify the professional training and certification system, which seems too heterogeneous, if compared to other high scientific and technical professions, as is the case, for example, of medicine or engineering. In this book the diagnostic experiences are described, though, for logistical reasons, often briefly, following a systematic methodological approach, according to three of the main steps for the knowledge of historical buildings: anamnesis, diagnosis and prognosis, obviously with particular attention to the specifically diagnostic issues (diagnosis), but framed in the preliminary diagnostic plan and interpreted in the light of the performance, prefigured in the preliminary stages and connected to the visual inspection. That is why this book regards not only some experimental, unconventional and innovative diagnostic surveys and diagnostic experiences, carried out on particularly valuable monumental buildings under the historical-architectural point of view, but also ordinary and simple experiences in the field of professional diagnostic practice, where, however, it was possible to apply the methodology and the know-how, acquired and systematized in the performance of the experimental diagnostic surveys, often included in wider scientific research projects. This book is not exclusively addressing the scientific and academic community, but it also pursues the aim of disseminating in the professional system a heritage of rather varied experimental researches and practical experiences, but methodologically oriented toward a culture, which considers the design of diagnostic plans as a regulation criterion for quality control of professionals.
