Book excerpt: We generalize tilting with respect to a tilting module of projective dimension at most one for an Artin algebra to tilting with respect to a torsion pair in an Abelian category. Our construction is motivated by the connection between tilting and derived categories. We develop a general theory for such tilting, and are led to a generalization of tilting algebras which we call quasitilted algebras. This class also contains the canonical algebras, and we show that the quasitilted algebras are characterized by having global dimension at most two and each indecomposable module having projective dimension at most one or injective dimension at most one. We also give other characterizations of quasitilted algebras, and give methods for constructing such algebras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Part 1 of a two-volume set. Since Oscar Zariski organized a meeting in 1954, there has been a major algebraic geometry meeting every decade: Woods Hole (1964), Arcata (1974), Bowdoin (1985), Santa Cruz (1995), and Seattle (2005). The American Mathematical Society has supported these summer institutes for over 50 years. Their proceedings volumes have been extremely influential, summarizing the state of algebraic geometry at the time and pointing to future developments. The most recent Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry was held July 2015 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, sponsored by the AMS with the collaboration of the Clay Mathematics Institute. This volume includes surveys growing out of plenary lectures and seminar talks during the meeting. Some present a broad overview of their topics, while others develop a distinctive perspective on an emerging topic. Topics span both complex algebraic geometry and arithmetic questions, specifically, analytic techniques, enumerative geometry, moduli theory, derived categories, birational geometry, tropical geometry, Diophantine questions, geometric representation theory, characteristic and -adic tools, etc. The resulting articles will be important references in these areas for years to come.

The authors of this book investigate the subgroups of certain types of simple algebraic groups and obtain a complete description of all those subgroups which are themselves simple. This description is particularly useful in understanding centralizers of subgroups and restrictions of representations.

Book excerpt: Over the last three decades representation theory of groups, Lie algebras and associative algebras has undergone a rapid development through the powerful tool of almost split sequences and the Auslander-Reiten quiver. Further insight into the homology of finite groups has illuminated their representation theory. The study of Hopf algebras and non-commutative geometry is another new branch of representation theory which pushes the classical theory further. All this can only be seen in connection with an understanding of the structure of special classes of rings. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to some modern developments in: Lie algebras, quantum groups, Hopf algebras and algebraic groups; non-commutative algebraic geometry; representation theory of finite groups and cohomology; the structure of special classes of rings.

Book excerpt: This memoir contains a complete classification of the finite irreducible 2-subgroups of GL(4, C). Specifically, the author provides a parametrized list of representatives for the conjugacy classes of such groups, where each representative is defined by generating a set of monomial matrices. The problem is treated by a variety of techniques, including: elementary character theory; a method for describing Hasse diagrams of submodule lattices; and calculation of 2-cohomology by means of the Lyndon-Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence. Related questions concerning isomorphism between the listed groups and Schur indices of their defining characters are also considered

Book excerpt: In recent years, number theory and arithmetic geometry have been enriched by new techniques from noncommutative geometry, operator algebras, dynamical systems, and K-Theory. This volume collects and presents up-to-date research topics in arithmetic and noncommutative geometry and ideas from physics that point to possible new connections between the fields of number theory, algebraic geometry and noncommutative geometry. The articles collected in this volume present new noncommutative geometry perspectives on classical topics of number theory and arithmetic such as modular forms, class field theory, the theory of reductive p-adic groups, Shimura varieties, the local L-factors of arithmetic varieties. They also show how arithmetic appears naturally in noncommutative geometry and in physics, in the residues of Feynman graphs, in the properties of noncommutative tori, and in the quantum Hall effect.

Book excerpt: In the structure theory of real Lie groups, there is still information lacking about the exponential function. Most notably, there are no general necessary and sufficient conditions for the exponential function to be surjective. It is surprising that for subsemigroups of Lie groups, the question of the surjectivity of the exponential function can be answered. Under nature reductions setting aside the "group part" of the problem, subsemigroups of Lie groups with surjective exponential function are completely classified and explicitly constructed in this memoir. There are fewer than one would think and the proofs are harder than one would expect, requiring some innovative twists. The main protagonists on the scene are SL(2, R) and its universal covering group, almost abelian solvable Lie groups (ie. vector groups extended by homotheties), and compact Lie groups. This text will also be of interest to those working in algebra and algebraic geometry.

Book excerpt: This memoir studies reducibility in a certain class of induced representations for and , where is -adic. In particular, it is concerned with representations obtained by inducing a one-dimensional representation from a maximal parabolic subgroup (i.e., degenerate principal series representations). Using the Jacquet module techniques of Tadić, the reducibility points for such representations are determined. When reducible, the composition series is described, giving Langlands data and Jacquet modules for the irreducible composition factors.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with recent trends in the representation theory of algebras and its exciting interaction with geometry, topology, commutative algebra, Lie algebras, quantum groups, homological algebra, invariant theory, combinatorics, model theory and theoretical physics. The collection of articles, written by leading researchers in the field, is conceived as a sort of handbook providing easy access to the present state of knowledge and stimulating further development. The topics under discussion include diagram algebras, Brauer algebras, cellular algebras, quasi-hereditary algebras, Hall algebras, Hecke algebras, symplectic reflection algebras, Cherednik algebras, Kashiwara crystals, Fock spaces, preprojective algebras, cluster algebras, rank varieties, varieties of algebras and modules, moduli of representations of quivers, semi-invariants of quivers, Cohen-Macaulay modules, singularities, coherent sheaves, derived categories, spectral representation theory, Coxeter polynomials, Auslander-Reiten theory, Calabi-Yau triangulated categories, Poincare duality spaces, selfinjective algebras, periodic algebras, stable module categories, Hochschild cohomologies, deformations of algebras, Galois coverings of algebras, tilting theory, algebras of small homological dimensions, representation types of algebras, and model theory. This book consists of fifteen self-contained expository survey articles and is addressed to researchers and graduate students in algebra as well as a broader mathematical community. They contain a large number of open problems and give new perspectives for research in the field.

Book excerpt: This volume is the Proceedings of the Third Korea-China-Japan Inter national Symposium on Ring Theory held jointly with the Second Korea Japan Joint Ring Theory Seminar which took place at the historical resort area of Korea, Kyongju, June 28-July 3, 1999. It also includes articles by some invited mathematicians who were unable to attend the conference. Over 90 mathematicians from 12 countries attended this conference. The conference is held every 4 years on a rotating basis. The first con ference was held in 1991 at Guilin, China. In 1995 the second conference took place in Okayama, Japan. At the second conference it was decided to include Korea, who hosted this conference of 1999. During the past century Ring Theory has diversified into many subar eas. This is reflected in these articles from over 25 well-known mathemati cians covering a broad range of topics, including: Classical Ring Theory, Module Theory, Representation Theory, and the theory of Hopf Algebras. Among these peer reviewed papers are invited survey articles as well as research articles. The survey articles provide an overview of various areas for researchers looking for a new or related field to investigate, while the research articles give the flavor of current research. We feel that the variety of related topics will stimulate interaction between researchers. Moreover the Open Problems section provides guidance for future research. This book should prove attractive to a wide audience of algebraists. Gary F. Birkenmeier, Lafayette, U. S. A.

Book excerpt: "We prove that any variety of relation algebras which contains an algebra with infinitely many elements below the identity, or which contains the full group relation algebra on some infinite group (or on arbitrarily large finite groups), must have an undecidable equational theory. Then we construct an embedding of the lattice of all subsets of the natural numbers into the lattice of varieties of relation algebras such that the variety correlated with a set [italic capital]X of natural numbers has a decidable equational theory if and only if [italic capital]X is a decidable (i.e., recursive) set. Finally, we construct an example of an infinite, finitely generated, simple, representable relation algebra that has a decidable equational theory.'' -- Abstract.
