Book Synopsis Handbook of Soil Sciences by : Pan Ming Huang
Download or read book Handbook of Soil Sciences written by Pan Ming Huang and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-17 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An evolving, living organic/inorganic covering, soil is in dynamic equilibrium with the atmosphere above, the biosphere within, and the geology below. It acts as an anchor for roots, a purveyor of water and nutrients, a residence for a vast community of microorganisms and animals, a sanitizer of the environment, and a source of raw materials for construction and manufacturing. To develop lasting solutions to the challenges of balanced use and stewardship of the Earth, we require a fundamental understanding of soil—from its elastic, porous three-phase system to its components, processes, and reactions. Handbook of Soil Sciences: Resource Management and Environmental Impacts, Second Edition is the second of two volumes that form a comprehensive reference on the discipline of soil science. Completely revised and updated to reflect the current state of knowledge, this volume covers interfacial interactions between the physical, chemical, and biological regimes within the soil; the factors that control the availability of plant nutrients and microelements; interdisciplinary aspects of soil science, including salinity, sodicity, and soil erosion; and soil databases for assessing worldwide soil resources. Critical elements addressed in each section include: Descriptions of concepts and theories Definitions, approaches, methodologies, and procedures Data in tabular and figure format Extensive references This cohesive handbook provides a thorough understanding of soil science principles and practices based on a rigorous, complete, and up-to-date treatment of the subject matter compiled by leading scientists. It is a resource rich in data, offering professional soil scientists, agronomists, engineers, ecologists, biologists, naturalists, and students their first point of entry into a particular aspect of the soil sciences.

Book Synopsis Relay- and Double-crop Production Systems for Wheat by : Leah N. Sandler
Download or read book Relay- and Double-crop Production Systems for Wheat written by Leah N. Sandler and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cover crops are important to provide organic matter to soils, diversify cropping systems, and provide economic benefits if the correct cropping systems are utilized. Relay-intercrop production involves overlapping growth cycles of two or more crops. This production system is common with legumes seeded into small grains; however, the companion crops may compete for water, nutrients, and sunlight, which may slow development of either crop. Relay-intercropped soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production involves seeding wheat in the fall and an intercrop seeding of soybeans into standing wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). This cropping system has been proposed to reduce risk associated with double-crop soybean production, move double-crop production farther north, and increase farm profitability. Diversifying crops used in these cropping systems may allow farmers more crop production choices. Double-cropping may also be an alternative to avoid competition for resources among intercrops. Field research was needed to determine what alternative crops would be successful in various cropping systems. The objectives of this research were to 1) determine the feasibility of intercropping alternative crops into standing wheat, 2) observe the effect of wheat row spacing on wheat and alternative crop yields, 3) evaluate the effects of intercropping and double-crop planting dates on alternative crops, and 4) evaluate double-crop planting dates of oil seed radishes on winter annual weed suppression and corn yields.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Soybean Insect Pests by : Leon G. Higley
Download or read book Handbook of Soybean Insect Pests written by Leon G. Higley and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 1994-09-28 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Soybean Insect Pests is the first book in a new series from the Entomological Society of America that examines pest management from all angles—magnifying practical field strategies for growers—and updates growers on the latest protection techniques—preventing needless crop loss as a result of outdated pest control procedures. Edited by Leon G. Higley and David J. Boethel, this book outlines fundamental approaches to soybean pest management that can aid in reducing crop damage and loss. It provides detailed descriptions of topics such as insect identification, life-history data, and management options. This comprehensive guide includes discussions on soybean ecology and physiology, soybean insect pests, predators and parasitoids, soybean pest management procedures, noninsect soybean pests, and insect management. Also included are 92 color photographs, 200 illustrations, a directory of resources for obtaining local information, and a glossary.
