Book excerpt: Exploring ethnic Tibet independently is a challenge. With the 'land of snows' having some of the wildest and roughest road routes in high Asia, motoring, mountain-biking and trekking options are all given due attention in this new edition. High quality, numerous maps set this guide apart from other guides on Tibet and the trekking section has been expanded to include more on the main treks, including Everest Base Camp, Genden to Samye, Namtso trek and Kailiash region treks. Particular attention has been paid to the Amdo and Kham regions, not usually covered in guidebooks. Political and cultural issues make Tibet a sensitive destination for Westerners, so Michael Buckley's authoritative advice includes guidelines on cultural etiquette, local customs, and travelling with minimum impact on the culture and environment. The chapter on language includes a section covering Tibetan script.

Book excerpt: The Tibetan language comprises a wide range of spoken and written varieties whose known history dates from the 7th century AD to the present day. Its speakers inhabit a vast area in Central Asia and the Himalayas extending into seven modern nation states, while its abundant literature includes much of vital importance to the study of Buddhism. After surveying all the known varieties of Tibetan, including their geographical and historical background, this book concentrates on a phonological and grammatical description of the modern spoken Lhasa dialect, the standard spoken variety. The grammatical framework which has been specially devised to describe this variety is then applied to the written varieties of Preclassical and Classical Tibetan, demonstrating the fundamental unity of the language. The writing system is outlined, though all examples and texts are given in roman script and where appropriate, the International Phonetic Alphabet. The volume includes a comprehensive bibliography.

Book excerpt: The Tibetan Phrasebook is a phrasebook of colloquial Amdo Tibetan. It is geared towards preparing students of Amdo Tibetan to be conversational in the field of study, allowing students to pronounce and understand the phonemically complex language. The Phrasebook should be used with the accompanying audio transcript, available for free on The Tibetan Phrasebook website. Unlike many other manuals of Amdo Tibetan, the emphasis therein is not on the classical didactic grammatical approach, but the practical acquisition of the colloquial language. The Phrasebook also allows students to practice reading the two most widely utilized scripts of Tibetan: the "headed" script used mostly in print, and the "headless" script, typically used in handwriting. The Phrasebook has eight different scenarios common to tourists, students, and researchers of Tibetan regions: Introducing Oneself Eating and Drinking Visiting a Tibetan Family Traveling At the Market At School On the Phone At the Clinic All eight scenarios are dialogues read out-loud by a native Tibetan speaker, followed by a translation by the author, a native English speaker. For best results: listen carefully to the native Tibetan speaker's phrase and repeat as faithfully as possible. The audio is available for free on The Tibetan Phrasebook website. More advanced users can follow along by reading the Tibetan script in either the print or cursive variations. To date, The Tibetan Phrasebook is one of the only English language tools available to learn to read the "headless" (UMed) cursive script of Tibetan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is based on a manuscript which was carried by a Chinese monk through the monasteries of the Hexi corridor, as part of his pilgrimage from Wutaishan to India. The manuscript has been created as a composite object from three separate documents, with Chinese and Tibetan texts on them. Included is a series of Tibetan letters of introduction addressed to the heads of monasteries along the route, functioning as a passport when passing through the region. The manuscript dates to the late 960s, coinciding with the large pilgrimage movement during the reign of Emperor Taizu of the Northern Song recorded in transmitted sources. Therefore, it is very likely that this is a unique contemporary testimony of the movement, of which our pilgrim was also part. Complementing extant historical sources, the manuscript provides evidence for the high degree of ethnic, cultural and linguistic diversity in Western China during this period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Chris Bonington and Charles Clarke, long-time friends and expedition partners, few mountains were more alluring than Sepu Kangri. Known locally as 'the Great White Snow God', Tibet's nearly 7,000-metre mountain had never before been visited by Westerners. Armed only with a tourist map for reference, the two set off for this elusive peak in 1996. In the reconnaissance and two expeditions that followed, neither of them were expecting to be profoundly impacted by their experiences. However, they not only met their match in Sepu Kangri, but both found their expertise pushed to the limit. While Clarke acted as a travelling doctor, treating myriad ailments encountered along the way, including a life-saving diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy, Bonington's love of technology saw him testing out cutting-edge satellite phones and computers, allowing them to communicate with the outside world for the first time on an expedition. Tibet's Secret Mountain is a story of discovery as much as it is an account of the expeditions, and it is this that sets it apart from other mountaineering memoirs. The focus not only on the climbing itself, but the experiences, people and tensions that accompany it, offers a poignancy that anyone with a love of adventure will identify with. Beautifully written and full of unfailing cheer, Tibet's Secret Mountain is Bonington and Clarke's love letter to mountaineering.
