Book excerpt: Jacques Barzun, the noted Columbia University historian of ideas and culture, once described the feeling that some people experience when they come upon a new reference book. He wrote: “Hand over to one of us a new Dictionary, “Companion,” or Guide, and our eyes first light up and then turn dreamy: we have seized the volume and are off, arm in arm with the guide i or companion. ...” The book now in your hands made my eyes light up. Thyroid Disorders with Cutaneous Manifestations is that kind of book. Heymann, who has been fascinated by this sometimes controversial subject for decades, has brought not only his own expertise, but that of many experts from the fields of the skin and the thyroid gland. Steven Jay Gould wrote about overlapping and nonoverlapping magisteria—this book demonstrates just how much important overlap there is. But it also covers the basics in such a way that dermatologists can find what they need to know about the thyroid and thyroidologists can find what they need to know about the skin. Thyroid Disorders with Cutaneous Manifestations falls neatly into the tra- tion of medical monographs that become standards. They fulfill the roles of gathering, digesting, and synthesizing current knowledge, and they do so in a way that review articles cannot approach and that the scientific literature is not designed to accomplish.

Their description is thus of relevance for early diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disease for specialists in endocrinology as well as in dermatology. Lavishly illustrated, this book describes the clinical and histological features of skin lesions observed in endocrine diseases. All features are reader-friendly structured and written in the language of dermatologists in order to enable a simple association between the features observed and the endocrine etiology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary intent of this book is to familiarize the medical practitioner with the "nail unit" in a way which will render, correctly and more easily, the diagnosis of nail diseases. At the same time, it serves to encourage the treatment and corrective measures of the ab normalities, if possible, based on anatomical and physiological knowledge. The chapters on anatomy, regeneration, and nail formation are basic to the author's in tent. The content ofthe references quoted represents information which is proven and not controversial material. In addition, my own material not previously published is included. I would like to introduce the anatomical concept that the nail unit consists of four dif ferent epithelial structures, each with its own characteristics, yet all interrelated. These four constituents are the Proximal Nail Fold (PNF), the Matrix (M), the Nail Bed (NB) and the Hyponychium (HYP). A disease may occur in any number of or all nail unit structures. A clear understanding of the anatomy, histology, and tissue kinetics of each constituent will be necessary and is the key factor in interpreting the abnormal findings of each of these constituents as disease occurs. It follows, therefore, that treatment and Cor rective measures should include the knowledge of not only the nail but also of its relation ship to the bony phalanx and the digit.

Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to introduce this new book, Clinical and Pathological Aspects of Skin Diseases in Endocrine, Metabolic, Nutritional, and Deposition Disease, edited by two of my friends and respected colleagues, Franco Rongioletti and Bruce R. Smoller. In fact, I was very ent- siastic when I learned that they were preparing this work. Although endocrine, metabolic, w, and deposition diseases are regularly included in general textbooks of dermatology and d- matopathology, one gains the general impression that these topics receive little emphasis and are mainly included for completeness. The prospect of having all of this information in one volume, lovingly described and detailed by experts in the feld, should be of great interest not only to dermatologists, pathologists, and dermatopathologists but also to internists and en- crinologists, who may well gain a different perspective on these disorders. As a derma- pathologist, I am also pleased that this project has been organized and undertaken by two distinguished authorities in cutaneous pathology. This assures a close integration of histo- thology and other laboratory techniques with the clinical aspects of these disorders, which will make it possible – perhaps for the frst time – to view these conditions in a truly comprehensive way. So I invite you, the reader, to open this volume and dig in; be prepared for an eye-catching, intellectually stimulating, and ultimately rewarding experience! Charlottesville, VA James W.
