Meanwhile, her sister Onivia will stop at nothing to save her sister from the Night King’s clutches. But Onivia’s attempts at seducing her former fiancé Naxus Albus and securing his help have not been successful. Albus is obsessed with killing Larent, the fae who divested Onivia of her virtue, the fae who Onivia has complicated, churning feelings for. Kateiko Rin lives a quiet life with her parents and her people in the coastal rainforest. Everything changes when her estranged uncle washes up on their shores, harried and half-dead, trailed by two blue-eyed children no one knew existed. To protect her family, Kateiko secrets away her young cousins. Caring for them includes hiding their ties to the Rúonbattai, a warlike cult trying to claim the land for themselves, along with as many lives as they can. With the immigrant mage Tiernan and his companions Jorumgard and Nerio, Kateiko enters into the fray, facing strange, dangerous magic that unwinds the fabric of time. She must end the war before it tears the land, and her family, apart. In the third book in The Call of the Rift series, Jae Waller invites us into another dimension and introduces an alternate version of her captivating heroine in a world full of familiar and unknown faces, including many we thought long dead.

Book excerpt: Wizened and invigorated by their losses, fears, and ultimate triumph in the elven ruins of Kadason, the Heroes of Dragon’s Nest seek to continue the mission of their looming benefactor by traveling on to the magic-infused stronghold of Falcon Crest. Arriving in the great city, however, they find its people as distrusting of outsiders—especially those of half-breed blood—as they are enamored with their protectors; the Samanir Order and its champions. Allie, meanwhile, soon unearths details of her past that throw everything she thinks she’s learned about her nature into question, as well as the course of her future. With new allies made and even the most trusted of heroes possibly concealing secrets to shake the foundation of Falcon Crest and Covorum beyond, each of Entohika’s emissaries will be forced to question what they value most, before their own inaction might claim it from them.

There are many instances and images which might be offensive, even traumatic for some. And, too, in this book, too, there is cruelty combined with eroticism. For a man-eat-man menu (though food for thought is not an edible . . . those captured by the hunters for the "herd" are, to feed and/or breed) - is the only remaining sustenance on desecrated earth. Almighty Gord is hunter of prey (there is no other bread of life).

Book excerpt: A breathtaking and ineffable new novel from the author of the international best sellers Fugitive Pieces and The Winter Vault—a novel of love and loyalty across generations, at once sweeping and intimate 1917. On a battlefield near the River Escaut, John lies in the aftermath of a blast, unable to move or feel his legs. Struggling to focus his thoughts, he is lost to memory as the snow falls—a chance encounter in a pub by a railway, a hot bath with his lover on a winter night. 1920. John has returned from war to North Yorkshire, near a different river. He is alive but still not whole. Reunited with Helena, an artist, he reopens his photography business and tries to keep on living. But the past erupts insistently into the present, as ghosts begin to surface in his pictures: ghosts with messages he cannot understand. So begins a narrative that spans four generations of connections and consequences that ignite and reignite as the century unfolds. In radiant moments of desire, comprehension, longing, and transcendence, the sparks fly upward, working their transformations decades later. Held is affecting and intensely beautiful, full of mystery, wisdom, and compassion, a novel by a writer at the height of her powers.

Book excerpt: The WW II Diary of a US Merchant Mariner brings to light previously untold WW II sea action and the wartime experiences of a few seagoing men, their ships, and their voyages. The diary includes high-seas action, drama, and a bizarre event that needs to be told for posterity. The story opens another small door into the lives of the seamen whose stories had heretofore rested dormant and gathered dust. The men of the Merchant Marine and the Navy Armed Guard, who comprise a forgotten gray area, forged a strong chain, and proved an indispensable team in the course of WW II. The narration here gathers together personal significant events of maritime shipboard action, and will provide insight and resources for future generations concerning how the US fought the way to victory. Based upon the WW II wartime voyages of the merchant ships listed in the introduction, the story also relates the daily activities recorded within the ships’ log books, several forms which were consulted for this book. A ship’s secret log book is maintained by the ship’s master, and subsequently is administered by the US Navy. The secret log, a wealth of information, contains voyage routes, ports of call, ship events, and records of longitude, latitude, and enemy action. In addition, the Naval Armed Guard commander also kept a daily log book of the armed guard service activities. And last, the official log book for ship activities and the merchant crew’s welfare and affairs, was kept by the ship’s chief mate. It was required by federal law and provided by the US Coast Guard. These and other records can be found shelved at the Naval District US Government Archived Files.

Book excerpt: This novel posing as a dissertation on León Fuertes, the fictional president of a made-up Banana Republic is “still fresh, funny, and disturbingly relevant” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). To fulfill his PhD requirement, Camilo Fuertes decides to write about his father León, the martyred president of Tinieblas, a small country in Latin America. As Camilo traces his family’s roots, we follow León along his twisted path through delinquency, learning, lust, and bravery to his historic position of leadership. At once a powerful vision of Latin American history and a brilliant parody of the academic form—complete with endnotes—The Dissertation is the second novel in Koster’s acclaimed Tinieblas trilogy, and an essential postmodern novel in the tradition of Vonnegut, Barth, and Nabokov. “One of the few books of the past 20 years that deserves to be called astonishing. It is a brilliant novel, structurally a marvel and, in all, a demonstration of elan as that quality seldom is experienced in a work of fiction.” —The Des Moines Register “Longtime Panama resident Koster portrays Latin America with a comedian’s sense of timing, a scholar’s sense of history, and a native’s fond despair.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Koster is that rare thing: a writer from the heart, passionate and uncompromising.” —John le Carré

Book excerpt: The electrifying sequel to the national bestseller Smoke - bringing back readers to a world that Entertainment Weekly called "Part Dickens, part dystopia, and totally immersive." The year is 1909. It has been ten years since Thomas Argyle, Charlie Cooper and Livia Naylor set off a revolution by releasing Smoke upon the world. They were raised to think Smoke was a sign of sin manifested, but learned its suppression was really a means of controlling society. Smoke allowed people to mingle their emotions, to truly connect, and the trio thought that freeing the Smoke would bring down the oppressive power structure and create a fair and open society. But the consequences were far greater than they had imagined, and the world has fractured. Erasmus Renfrew, the avowed enemy of Smoke, is now Lord Protector of what remains of the English state. Charlie and Livia live in Minetowns, an egalitarian workers' community in the north of England which lives by Smoke. Thomas Argyle is in India on a clandestine mission to find out the origins of Smoke, and why the still-powerful Company is mounting an expedition in the Himalayas. Mowgli, the native whose body was used to trigger the tempest that unleashed the Smoke, now calls himself Nils and is a chameleon-like thief living in New York. And Eleanor Renfrew, Erasmus' niece who was the subject of his cruel experiments in suppressing Smoke, is in hiding from her uncle in provincial Canada. What she endured has given her a strange power over Smoke, which she fears as much as her uncle. Believing her uncle's agents have found her, she flees to New York with a theater troupe led by Balthazar Black, an impresario with secrets of his own. There they encounter Nils and a Machiavellian Company man named Smith. All these people seek to discover the true nature of Smoke, and thereby control its power. As their destinies entwine, a cataclysmic confrontation looms, and the Smoke will either bind them together or rend the world.
