Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of New Concepts in Ejector Thrust Augmentation for V/stol by : Morton Alperin
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of New Concepts in Ejector Thrust Augmentation for V/stol written by Morton Alperin and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic concept involved in the investigation is the utilization of the Coanda effect in combination with an external cascade of airfoils. That combination served to achieve a more efficient rotation and amplification of the jet thrust vector as a result of both the large induced mass flow from the environment and the simultaneous high lift of the cascaded airfoils. The program objective was to establish optimal performance by systematic variation of the pertinent parameters. Experimental results showed a gain of 20% in augmented thrust compared to that of a simple Coanda cylinder. Since the observed mass flow through the airfoil cascade was small, in-house tests were performed with diffusion. The resultant increase in secondary mass flow produced a gain of 65% in thrust augmentation over the tests without diffusion despite large regions of flow separation in the diffuser. It appears highly probable that further large gains can result from precise diffuser design and boundary layer control in the diffuser. (Author).

Book Synopsis Thrust Augmentation Considerations for Stol and Extended Cruise Propulsion by : William S. Campbell
Download or read book Thrust Augmentation Considerations for Stol and Extended Cruise Propulsion written by William S. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of thrust augmentation concepts to short take-off and landing (STOL) aircraft propulsion is described for some typical installations. Aerodynamic and ejector thrust effects are treated separately so that the performance of the ejector-powered wing can be calculated as that of a jet-flapped airfoil and the ejector thrust components then added. Some considerations on the performance of the ejector-powered wing in cruise are included. A program for ejector calculations is given. (Author).

Book Synopsis Preliminary Study of Vto Thrust Requirements for a V/Stol Aircraft with Lift Plus Lift/Cruise Propulsion by : National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
Download or read book Preliminary Study of Vto Thrust Requirements for a V/Stol Aircraft with Lift Plus Lift/Cruise Propulsion written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preliminary assessment was made of the VTO thrust requirements for a supersonic (Type B) aircraft with a Lift plus Lift/Cruise propulsion system. A baseline aircraft with a takeoff gross weight (TOGW) of 13 608 kg (30,000 lb) was assumed. Pitch, roll, and yaw control thrusts (i.e., the thrusts needed for aircraft attitude control in the flight hover mode) were estimated based on a specified set of maneuver acceleration requirements for V/STOL aircraft. Other effects (such as installation losses, suckdown, reingestion, etc.), which add to the thrust requirements for VTO were also estimated. For the baseline aircraft, the excess thrust required for attitude control of the aircraft during VTO and flight hover was estimated to range from 36.9 to 50.9 percent of the TOGW. It was concluded that the total thrust requirements for the aircraft/propulsion system are large and significant. In order to achieve the performance expected of this aircraft/propulsion system, reductions must be made in the excess thrust requirements. Turney, G. E. and Allen, J. L. Book Synopsis XV-4A VTOL Research Aircraft Program by : Robert Llewellyn Nicholson
Download or read book XV-4A VTOL Research Aircraft Program written by Robert Llewellyn Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program was conducted to determine the feasibility of the augmented jet ejector concept for attaining a VTOL capability for aircraft. During the flight test program, the actual vertical thrust realized was only about 93 percent of that predicted, and consequently the aircraft, the XV-4A, had a marginal lift capability. This marginal lift capability severely limited the capability to conduct quantitative data gathering during the flight test program. The report presents the limited quantitative results obtained and a brief summary of the aircraft design, systems, flight test program, VTOL lift improvement program, and small-scale and full-scale wind tunnel programs. The feasibility of the augmented jet ejector concept was demonstrated; however, this concept is not considered to be competitive with other concepts for attaining a VTOL capability. (Author).
