Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through the Yellowstone Park on HorsebackIn June, 1885, I decided to undertake a trip through the Rocky Mountains, with my wife and eldest daughter, a young lady of seventeen. The latter had been quite ill during the preceding winter from an affection of the lungs, and I was advised that exercise and open air life at a high altitude would remove all traces of her disease, a result which I am glad to say was fully accomplished by the trip.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Weeks on Horseback Through Yellowstone Park It was my intention, when my husband and I joined the Rocky Mountain Camping Party for a size-week trip to and through the Yellowstone Park, to share the pleasure of that trip with my parents by writing every night a full account of what I had seen that day. I found, however, that I was usually too tired or too cold to write a long letter after we arrived at our camp, so I merely kept a diary. A large part of my diary was written while we were on the road and is scarcely legible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placing American Indians in the center of the story, Restoring a Presence relates an entirely new history of Yellowstone National Park. Although new laws have been enacted giving American Indians access to resources on public lands, Yellowstone historically has excluded Indians and their needs from its mission. Each of the other flagship national parks—Glacier, Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Grand Canyon—has had successful long-term relationships with American Indian groups even as it has sought to emulate Yellowstone in other dimensions of national park administration. In the first comprehensive account of Indians in and around Yellowstone, Peter Nabokov and Lawrence Loendorf seek to correct this administrative disparity. Drawing from archaeological records, Indian testimony, tribal archives, and collections of early artifacts from the Park, the authors trace the interactions of nearly a dozen Indian groups with each of Yellowstone’s four geographic regions. Restoring a Presence is illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and maps and features narratives on subjects ranging from traditional Indian uses of plant, mineral, and animal resources to conflicts involving the Nez Perce, Bannock, and Sheep Eater peoples. By considering the many roles Indians have played in the complex history of the Yellowstone region, authors Nabokov and Loendorf provide a basis on which the National Park Service and other federal agencies can develop more effective relationships with Indian groups in the Yellowstone region.

Oldham, who, also was anxious to behold the beauties of this wonderful region, and we concluded to make immediate prepara tions for our departure. We accordingly each procured a saddle horse and a pack animal and expected to complete our prepara tions and be upon the road by the 1st of August. A few day 8 previous to the time of our contemplated departure, however, I met Mr. A. Arnold, of Blackfoot, who, upon being informed that Mr. Oldham and myself were about ready to start for the Geysers or National Park, said that if we would wait un til he could complete his preparations he would accompany us. Being glad of his company we consented to do so, and then, since there were three of us, we altered our plans as to the manner of our going and procured a buggy. Book excerpt: In The Ecological Thought, eco-philosopher Timothy Morton has argued for the inclusion of “dark ecology” in our thinking about nature. Dark ecology, he argues, puts hesitation, uncertainty, irony, and thoughtfulness back into ecological thinking.” The ecological thought, he says, should include “negativity and irony, ugliness and horror.” Focusing on this concept of “dark ecology” and its invitation to add an anti-pastoral perspective to ecocriticism, this collection of essays on American literature and culture offers examples of how a vision of nature’s darker side can create a fuller understanding of humanity’s relation to nature. Included are essays on canonical American literature, on new voices in American literature, and on non-print American media. This is the first collection of essays applying the “dark ecology” principle to American literature.
