Book excerpt: "Gets right under Italy's skin. Few books about living in foreign climes are written as entertainingly, beautifully or romantically." -- Sydney Morning Herald WINNER OF THE GROLLO RUZZENE FOUNDATION PRIZE When Chris travelled from Sydney to Dublin, he never dreamed his life was about to change forever. There he meets Daniela - one L, smile as you say it to pronounce it correctly - and it's amore at first sight. Before he can say si, he's uprooted to follow her to her sun-kissed hometown of Andrano, Puglia, tucked in the heel of southern Italy. The whitewashed houses, olive groves and cobblestone lanes are beautiful, but soon Chris is getting to grips with everyday Italian life. There's infuriating bureaucracy, an anarchic road system and - biggest challenge of all - Daniela's mamma, who's determined to convert him to the Catholic faith and build an extension on her house where the couple might live la dolce vita.

Book Synopsis Social Media in Southeast Italy by : Razvan Nicolescu
Download or read book Social Media in Southeast Italy written by Razvan Nicolescu and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is social media in southeast Italy so predictable when it is used by such a range of different people? This book describes the impact of social media on the population of a town in the southern region of Puglia, Italy. Razvan Nicolescu spent 15 months living among the town’s residents, exploring what it means to be an individual on social media. Why do people from this region conform on platforms that are designed for personal expression? Nicolescu argues that social media use in this region of the world is related to how people want to portray themselves. He pays special attention to the ability of users to craft their appearance in relation to collective ideals, values and social positions, and how this feature of social media has, for the residents of the town, become a moral obligation: they are expected to be willing to adapt their appearance to suit their different audiences at the same time, which is crucial in a town where religion and family are at the heart of daily life.
Download or read book Il Bel Centro written by Michelle Damiani and published by Rialto Press. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A witty and warm-hearted memoir of abandoning fast-paced American days in favor of discovering the Italian secrets of food, community, and life. Moving across the globe meant Michelle Damiani soon found herself untangling Italian customs, delighting in glorious regional cuisine (recipes included), and creating lasting friendships. From grandmothers eager to teach the ancient art of pasta making, to bakers tossing bread into fiery ovens with a song, to butchers extolling the benefits of pork fat, Il Bel Centro is rich with captivating characters and cultural insights. Throw in clinking glasses of Umbrian red with the local communists and a village all-nighter decorating the cobblestone streets with flower petals; as well as embarrassing language minefields and a serious summons to the mayor’s office, and you have all the ingredients for a spellbinding travel tale. Exquisitely observed, Il Bel Centro is an intimate celebration of small town Italy, as well as a thoughtful look at raising a family in a new culture and a fascinating story of finding a home. Ultimately though, this is a story about how travel can change you when you’re ready to let it. With laugh-out-loud situations and wanderlust-inspiring storytelling, Il Bel Centro is a joyous and life-affirming read that will have readers rushing to renew their passports. “This is one of the most beautiful book I’ve ever read.” “I absolutely couldn’t get enough of this book.” “This book made me want to pack my bags.” “I loved, loved this book. Fabulously written, engaging, and entertaining.” “A magical read.”

Download or read book Stolen Figs written by Mark Rotella and published by North Point Press. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effortlessly artful blend of travel book, memoir, and affectionate portrait of a people Calabria is the toe of the boot that is Italy—a rugged peninsula where grapevines and fig and olive trees cling to the mountainsides during the scorching summers while the sea crashes against the cliffs on both coasts. Calabria is also a seedbed of Italian American culture; in North America, more people of Italian heritage trace their roots to Calabria than to almost any other region in Italy. Mark Rotella's Stolen Figs is a marvelous evocation of Calabria and Calabrians, whose way of life is largely untouched by the commerce that has made Tuscany and Umbria into international tourist redoubts. A grandson of Calabrian immigrants, Rotella persuades his father to visit the region for the first time in thirty years; once there, he meets Giuseppe, a postcard photographer who becomes his guide to all things Calabrian. As they travel around the region, Giuseppe initiates Rotella—and the reader—into its secrets: how to make soppressata and 'nduja, where to find hidden chapels and grottoes, and, of course, how to steal a fig without actually committing a crime. Stolen Figs is a model travelogue—at once charming and wise, and full of the earthy and unpretentious sense of life that, now as ever, characterizes Calabria and its people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Heel of Italy: A Study of an Unknown City My interest in the unknown district with which this book deals dates from a commission from the Editor of The Architectural Review three years ago to explore the city of Lecce and to describe and illustrate its buildings. By his courtesy I am able to reproduce in this book eight of the drawings which have appeared in that magazine. In preparing the short series thus contributed, I found so much untouched and valuable material awaiting to be collected and recorded, that I commenced the present work, which is an attempt (the first ever made in any language) to outline the story of the city's history, to describe its inhabitants, their interesting province, and their remarkable achievements in art. Download or read book Adriatico written by Paola Bacchia and published by Rizzoli Publications. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautifully crafted cookbook that charts the food traditions in the towns that skirt the coastline of Italy’s striking Adriatic Sea. The food of Italy’s eastern coastline mirrors the memories and traditions of peoples past and present who have lived on the shores of the Adriatic, with ingredients reflecting the climate and terrain—of course with seafood in abundance, as well as an array of incredible pasta, rice, polenta, and meat dishes. The Adriatic coastline runs from the heel of the boot-shaped peninsula at the Ionian Sea, through Puglia and Venice, to the northern waters of the Gulf of Trieste on the border with Slovenia. Along its length are rugged rocky coastlines, sandy stretches of beach, lagoons, and wetlands. Spindly wooden fishing piers, white washed walls, colorful villages, and sea-facing piazzas dot the 750-mile coastline with a rich history touched by Etruscan, Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Austrian populations. Join Paola on this beautiful journey where she travels the length of this relatively unexplored coastline, to find ancient food traditions still thriving.
