He represented teachers on the state NCA board and helped facilitate in-service programs for other school districts. After visiting his daughter and son-in-law in the Netherlands, Feekes became interested in cycling and started riding his bike across Iowa on RAGBRAI. This will be his 19th ride this coming year. Canoeing into the Boundary Waters, sleeping with bears and other creatures interest him as well, along with fishing. He has found that fishing in South Dakota in a motorboat is much easier. Ron also enjoys hunting wild hogs in Oklahoma, bear in Canada, and deer in both South Dakota and Iowa with his son, son-in-law, and a Navy buddy. Feekes has been married to his wife, Heidi, for 52 years. Together, they have 13 grandchildren, making life rewarding and meaningful. The past three years, they have been contacting those mentioned in this book to acknowledge their significance to the story being told. Some are in nursing homes, others in assisted living, and those who have already passed away, Ron and Heidi have met with their families. Ron and Heidi have concluded that all author proceeds and other donations will be directed toward veterans in need to offer hope for a brighter tomorrow. Proceeds will be sent to the Feekes Veteran Benefit Fund for redistribution.

Book excerpt: Luck is on the side of most during the incident at the Four Kings Casino and Hotel, when the simmering tension between two rival biker gangs suddenly boils over into all-out violence -- miraculously, there are only two fatalities despite the hundreds of rounds fired on the casino floor. Called to an out-of-control crime scene -- located outside Las Vegas in the legendary town of Boot Hill -- forensic investigators Gil Grissom, Catherine Willows, Nick Stokes, and Sara Sidle quickly discover that the two casino shootout victims were no innocent bystanders: one was the powerful leader of the Predator gang, and the other a luckless card dealer who may have borne witness to an elaborately staged execution. Meanwhile, back in the glitter of Sin City, CSIs Warrick Brown and Greg Sanders have their own hands full, as the dark side of this desert metropolis is about to wreak havoc on the two investigators via a seemingly endless series of crimes. . . .

Book excerpt: By 1966, Hot Springs, Arkansas wasn’t your typical sleepy little Southern town. Once a favorite destination for mobsters like Al Capone and Lucky Luciano, illegal activities continued to lure out-of-state gamblers, flim-flam men, and high rollers to its racetracks, clubs, and bordellos. Still, the town was shaken to its core after a girl was found dead on a nearby ranch. The ranch owner claimed it was an accident. Then the rancher was found to be the killer of another woman – his fourth wife. The story begins when 13-year-old Cathie Ward was found dead after horseback riding at Blacksnake Ranch on the outskirts of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Frank Davis, the owner of the ranch, tells authorities Cathie’s death is an accident. He claims her foot caught in a stirrup and she was dragged to her death despite his pursuit of the runaway horse. People who know the 42-year-old skilled horseman don’t believe his story, and soon rumors of her rape and murder begin swirling around town. The rumors reach a crescendo after Davis viciously guns down his fourth wife and mother-in-law in broad daylight outside of a laundromat. Davis is arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Soon after, Hot Springs authorities re-open the investigation into Cathie Ward’s death. Snake Eyes is the first book to examine this decades-old murder and cover-up, and the only in-depth account of the man who would become the town’s most notorious villain. Featuring personal interviews, crime scene records, court documents, and Davis’ own prison files, author and lifelong Hot Springs resident Bitty Martin reveals the true story for the first time.

Book excerpt: Lieutenant Kramer and Sergeant Zondi have their hands full. On the same day that an adult entertainer known as Eve is found accidentally strangled to death in her dressing room, her pet python wrapped dead around her neck, a beloved candy shop owner named "Lucky" Siyayo is shot to death at his counter in a botched robbery. The detective duo quickly realize neither death is as simple as it looks on the surface: Lucky Siyayo's cash register was all but empty the day he was murdered, which suddenly throws a whole rash of fatal neighborhood robberies into perspective—were none of them robberies at all? It becomes clear a killer is on the loose, but Zondi and Kramer must figure out what the killer is after. Meanwhile, postmortem analysis reveals that Eve didn't die at the time her ex-boss had stated he'd discovered her body; the more Kramer picks the circumstances apart, the less they make sense. With two very different sets of crimes to solve, Kramer and Zondi set off on treks that take them all over town, from the poorer villages to the sleazy dressing rooms of con artists and pimps to gorgeous steop of the South African countryside in another surefire investigation full of both stirring observations of Apartheid and plenty of mischief. Only one thing is for sure—no one is getting to take his day off this week!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to reflect the most recent species classifications, a second edition of the beautifully illustrated and beloved guide to 600 members of the suborder Serpentes. For millennia, humans have regarded snakes with an exceptional combination of fascination and revulsion. Some people recoil in fear at the very suggestion of these creatures, while others happily keep them as pets. Snakes can convey both beauty and menace in a single tongue flick, and so these creatures have held a special place in our cultures. Yet, for as many meanings as we attribute to snakes—from fertility and birth to sin and death—the real-life species represent an even wider array of wonders. Now in a new edition, reflecting the most recent species classifications, The Book of Snakes presents 600 species of snakes from around the world, covering roughly one in seven of all snake species. It will bring greater understanding of a group of reptiles that have existed for more than 160 million years and that now inhabit every continent except Antarctica, as well as two of the great oceans. This volume pairs spectacular photos with easy-to-digest text. It is the first book on these creatures that combines a broad, worldwide sample with full-color, life-size accounts. Entries include close-ups of the snake’s head and a section of the snake at actual size. The detailed images allow readers to examine the intricate scale patterns and rainbow of colors as well as special features like a cobra’s hood or a rattlesnake’s rattle. The text is written for laypeople and includes a glossary of frequently used terms. Herpetologists and herpetoculturists alike will delight in this collection, and even those with a more cautious stance on snakes will find themselves drawn in by the wild diversity of the suborder Serpentes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Snake in the Garden is an explosive depiction of racism in twentieth-century Arkansas, seen through the lens of interracial relationships over four generations. Starting in 1926, and paying homage to Kate Chopin's "Desiree's Baby," the story moves to the turbulent night of the Kennedy assassination in 1963, the Hollywood music scene of the 1970s and '80s, and the still-troubled racial attitudes of 1993. Written by two women, one Black, one white, the novel depicts racism from the point of view of both Blacks and whites - racists, non-racists and victims, alike. The setting is the fictional town of Jefferson Springs, Arkansas, during the Jim Crow era. Lucille Day, a Black woman, worked as a domestic for the family of judge Reuben Whittier in the 1950s and early '60s. Her children, Regina and Clarence, were forbidden to be friends with the judge's daughter, Karen. In 1963, when Regina, Clarence and Karen were teenagers, bigotry prevailed, and it was illegal for Blacks and whites to have relationships or marry. The night President Kennedy was assassinated, three days after a stopover in town, all hell broke loose in Jefferson Springs, with tragic results, including a lynching. Clarence was jailed, and Regina was exiled to California to live with her Aunt Violet. There, she won a singing contest and became a pop star. Karen, meanwhile, was forced to stay home under the cruel thumb of her father. She longed for a true father-daughter bond, but in his eyes, she could do no right. She consoled herself in her boring and barren life with chocolate and English romance novels. Regina had vowed never to return to Arkansas. But when her mother died, she knew she had to attend the funeral. She dreaded going back where she had felt nothing but humiliation, anger and fear. Can the two women now unite to uncover the truth about their families, and finally make things right for Clarence? The Snake in the Garden is a powerful story of transcendence over scars of the past, and the healing that can come when the truth is finally faced.
