Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Siberia and Manchuria by Rail This short account of my journey from London to Shanghai by way of the Siberian Railway was at first intended for private circulation only, in order to meet the enquiries of numerous personal friends. Now, however, that war has broken out between Russia and Japan, and that it may be years before this, the longest railway in the world, is again open to international traffic, I feel that any information, however slight, concerning so stupendous an undertaking, as well as about the remote region which it traverses, may be of interest to the general public. I wish to emphasize that much of what is herein described was seen only from the windows of a moving train, and must therefore be lacking in that accuracy and detail which closer inspection could alone insure. The Russian words "KTO HAETb?" on the cover signify "who goes there"?, and the Chinese characters represent my surname. The Russian cross at the end, is that of the original Greek Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strange Siberia Along the Trans-Siberian Railway: A Journey From the Great Wall of China to the Skyscrapers of Manhattan Throughout our journeyings in the Tsar's dominions, we were entirely free from any dread of being shadowed by a Russian spy. During our sojourn at Tomsk, the capital of Siberia, we were not even asked to show our passport. Who can say but that our ex emption from all such espionage, of which travelers in Russia so generally complain, was due to the fact that a playful child was unconsciously acting as mascot for our Taft party? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awakening of the East The trans-siberian Railway has been greatly hindered by the Chinese rising in Manchuria. For practical purposes it can hardly be said to exist beyond Irkutsk, for although the line is completed as far as Stretensk, there is yet a lack of rolling-stock, and the dreary voyage by steamers of different draughts down the Shilka and Amur rivers to Khabarofsk, where the line to Vladivostok is met, deprives the railway route as yet of all its advantages over the sea-route from Europe. The last passengers who came from Vladivostok to Moscow before the interruption of traffic spent thirty-eight days on the journey, and it will have been noticed that by far the larger part of the reinforcing Russian troops, horses, and materziel were despatched to the Far East from Odessa, no small portion in British transports. The Manchurian section of the great railway has from the first, even in times of peace, presented great difficulties of climate, lack of supplies, and hostility of the native population, but now a considerable part of the work executed has been destroyed, the Russian forces have not yet succeeded in clearing the country of the Chinese troops and irregulars, a large garrison will have to be maintained to protect the works in hand, and a long delay over the original estimated dates of completion is inevitable. All this, however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Uttermost East: Being an Account of Investigations Among the Natives and Russian Convicts of the Island of Sakhalin, With Notes of Travel in Korea, Siberia, and Manchuria MANY books on Siberia have appeared during the last two decades, most of which fall into one of two categories; the earlier, into what we may label "exile literature," and the later, "Siberian railway sketches." The present work belongs in part to both of these classes, but deals chiefly with a portion of Siberia far beyond the terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway - the little-known island of Sakhalin. Such a terra incognita has Sakhalin been in the history of exploration, that until the year 1849 it was believed to be a peninsula even by the Russians; and six years later, in 1855, an English naval commander was outwitted owing to the prevailing ignorance of its insularity. It is therefore not surprising that, even as late as this twentieth century, I should have been the first English traveller to explore the northern interior. The sources of our knowledge of Sakhalin, even in Russian, are few and in English, if little has been heard of the convicts there, nothing has been written about the Gilyak and Orochon natives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Siberian Railway From St. Petersburg to Pekin One reviewer claims that these notes are too pro Russian-that I have said nothing about the sup posed frauds and dishonesties connected with the building of this railway. Certainly not. I do not consider that a mere book of travels has any place for such matter. To those interested in the progress of the great Empire of the North I can recommend nothing more interesting than a journey from ocean to ocean over this her great railway. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No railway journey on Earth can equal the Trans-Siberian between Moscow and Vladivostock. It is not just its vast length and the great variety of the lands and climes through which it passes. It is not just its history as the line that linked the huge territories which are Russia together. It is a dream which calls countless travellers to the adventure of the longest railway in the world. From the birth aboard of Rudolf Nureyev to the childhood obsession with the railway of Lesley Blanch, to the weariness that eventually overcame Paul Theroux, to the excitement of the author's own journey, this revised and updated collection of travellers' accounts brings together emotions, descriptions and humour from a century of travel. This new edition of a classic anthology takes us through the tremendous achievement of the railway’s construction across harsh, unsettled lands through the earliest journeys of Western travellers and the trains on which they travelled, and their descriptions of fellow travellers, food, scenery, domestic arrangements, adventures on and off the train, convicts, revolution and war as the train carried them through a lonely, lovely landscape. The barrier of Lake Baikal was crossed by a British-built ice-breaker, put together on the lakeside until the link around the deep water and through the first tunnels of the route was completed. The railway played – and still plays – a huge part in holding this vast country together.
