Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through Five Turkish Provinces The notes which have served me for the compilation of this little book were jotted down day by day; whatever erroneous opinions may be expressed were formed on the spot and are not due to subsequent investigations. I have been blamed for not making more of a book to have done so would have been easy enough. I need but have padded what I have written with historical and geographical information, which it is better to seek in works on history and geography, and with crude and worthless criticisms of men, manners and institutions. I have preferred to state simply what has come under my own observa tion and not to ape the omniscience of the journalist or of the globe-trotter. The matter which is printed in Appendix I. Originally appeared in the Review qf t/ze Wee/e and I have to thank the editor of that paper for kindly allowing me to reprint it. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fringe of the East a Journey Through Past and Present Provinces of Turkey A distinguished French writer, the late Vicomte E. M. de Vouge, once declared of the East: "L'Orient, qui ne sait plus faire d'histoire, a le noble privilege de conserver intacte celle d'autrefois." This sentence seemed just and true at the time when I returned from the journey which this book describes, that is to say, two months before the outbreak of the constitutional revolution in Constantinople in 1908; but in the period which has elapsed since then events have occurred which have destroyed its relevance and have changed many things in the regions with which I am here concerned. The East is again making history, and, in the process, it seems likely that some of the records of its past will fail to be preserved intact. So many vicissitudes have lately befallen the Turkish Empire that it has not been possible to adapt this book to every changing phase. Consequently, in so far as it deals with the political status and conditions of the Ottoman provinces through which my journey took me, it describes them as they were toward the close of the reign of 'Abdu'l Hamid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Journey Through Albania, and Other Provinces of Turkey in Europe and Asia, to Constantinople, Vol. 2 of 2: During the Years 1809 and 1810 It must be impossible to fix the precise period when the distinction between the vulgar and Hellenic Greek began to be generally acknowledged and distinguished by the invention of a new term. The transfer of the Empire to Byzantium, the irruptions of the Goths and other barbs rians. And the settlement of the Sclavonians and Franks in Greece, introduced, as has been observed, a variety of new words; but a complete mixture must have taken place between the natives and the Barbarians, before the written, or even the colloquial language, underwent in its idiom and structure such a material change, as was na cessary to form the Roma'ic out of the original Greek. In the case of Greece, the recollected glories of the past and the scandal of the servitude of a race once illustrious, were associated with the arguments drawn from the disturbance of the Levant, and probably told more in the production of the result than any keen sense of the specific character of Turkish oppression.
