I was an A/R supervisor for an oil company for 21 long years until the day they outsourced my job, and I suddenly found myself unemployed. I was devastated, heartbroken and felt betrayed all at the same time. I had $18,632 in my company retirement account, and they paid me two weeks of salary as a severance payment. After recovering from the shock, I started to apply for any and all jobs I could find online, but sadly didn't even land one interview. Around this time I read a success story of a lady who owns three thrift store business in Kentucky, I became inspired by her success and found a way to contact her. We spoke for a while, and she seemed genuinely nice and helpful as I told her my situation. She explained to me that this is one business which doesn't require much skill sets but only some serious dedication and passion to be successful. She said anyone could do it. She gave me some pointers and told me to work on them and to call her if I needed any help. A week after we first spoke, she called me up and offered to start a partnership venture with me, I was delighted, little shocked and very happy to have her as my partner. So our journey started. Fast forward two years, we are about to open our 3rd store next month, and I have never been this happy in my life. I finally feel that I was born to do this, and not what I did for my job for 21 sad years. Just so you guys know, I am not a writer, but I wanted to share this knowledge I have acquired for last two years with everyone that is looking for that opportunity, that break and that idea of a retail business that can be managed easily with true passion and dedication. As you read this book, you will learn how I was able to follow her advice and started our very first store at under $10,000. Remember, no risk no gain; we only live once, so if you believe in your own ability, if you think you have the passion and the dedication, then take the first step, and get started, be successful and live your life the way you want. Good luck!

PART II LITTLE TALKS ON THRIFT Herewith are presented a number of Little Talks on Thrift. These have appeared from time to time in the newspapers of the United States as a part of the educational campaign of the American Society for Thrift. The Author desires to take advantage of this opportunity in acknowledging, on behalf of the Thrift Society, his appreciation of the splendid cooperation which has been accorded by the press of the country in this work. Money-making And Money-saving An eminent European financier whose family for many generations has been a power in international banking affairs once said that it required a good deal of boldness and a great deal of caution to make a great fortune, and that when you got it, it required ten times greater wit to keep it. There is a distinct difference between the power of making money and the power of saving money. Making money is largely a knack--a special gift. Financiers, like poets, are born, not made. But thrift is just as essential to the money-maker as it is to the money-saver. No matter how shrewd a man may be nor how keenly developed his instincts for acquiring wealth, he will never be successful unless an element of thrift is woven into all his activities. The so-called plunger--the meteoric financier--may, at times, seem able to defy prudent practices and the principles of thrift. However, such success is seldom permanent. Wealth gained by a sort of legerdemain rather than through the working out of sound business practices nearly always proves transitory. The majority of men who have built up great fortunes, though they have, in many instances, risen rapidly, owe their success primarily to thrift. It was this that gave them the start they needed, and it was the development of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheer lack of thrift has caused more financial failures than anything else. How many men there are to-day who might have become wealthy had they only known how to save money! During the course of their careers they have earned large sums, but these have slipped from their fingers from day to day. They had the natural gift of making money, just as their successful rivals, but they lacked the quality of permanent success-which is thrift.-from "Money-Making and Money-Saving"The United States in the late 1910s was a nation reeling economically from the cost of fighting World War I, a cost that was ultimately borne-according to Simon William Straus, president of the American Society for Thrift-through a prudent parsimony. Here, he entreats the nation not to forget this vital lesson of the war, and to begin a new battle against the "crime of wastefulness." No mere matter of simply saving money, thrift is, Straus explains, the strength of character to spend wisely and with a thought toward the future, toward conserving natural resources, and toward freedom from the shackles of mindless consumerism-Straus' wise and sensible philosophy positions thrift as a necessary cornerstone of morality and patriotism. As startling relevant today as it was in 1920, when Straus laid out his plan for a frugal America, this is a book to make us reconsider, as individuals and as a nation, our financial strategies and priorities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thrift: Demonstrating How to Develop Character, Efficiency and Success The student should learn how to guide, control and develop these wonderful engines of dynamic force and power. Great, things have been accomplished through special training and education, at a great expenditure of time and money. We assume, therefore, that the result is a finished product - a man proficient, well skilled, possibly a genius in his line, as the reward of many years* toil and training. Then what happens Nine times out of Ten? We are then made to realize that "The Greatest Thief of all" has been slyly working his way in and robbing the student of much of his efficiency, possibly ruined him. Would you know the name of this Thief? It is Vice. All of our boys must run the gauntlet of Vice. It. is, as it were, a deep chasm over which they must pass, that is bestrewn and hidden by lovely flowers, whose charm and subtle fragrance intoxicate the senses and capture the will, while few danger signals warn him of the cruel fate that threatens him. Consequently, our most capable citizen often becomes greatly crippled if not entirely despoiled. The boy under this stress and strain may become a drunkard, criminal, syphilitic, gambler, thief or drug fiend, etc. I ask, is this treating him fairly? Educators witness their pupils being daily stricken or destroyed, while they stand helpless to Avert the catastrophe.
