Book Synopsis Thresholds and Boundaries by : Lynn F. Jacobs
Download or read book Thresholds and Boundaries written by Lynn F. Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although liminality has been studied by scholars of medieval and seventeenth-century art, the role of the threshold motif in Netherlandish art of the late fourteenth, fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries -- this late medieval/early ‘early modern’ period -- has been much less fully investigated. Thresholds and Boundaries: Liminality in Netherlandish Art (1385-1550) addresses this issue through a focus on key case studies (Sluter's portal of the Chartreuse de Champmol and the calendar pages of the Limbourg Brothers' Très Riches Heures), and on important formats (altarpieces and illuminated manuscripts). Lynn F. Jacobs examines how the visual thresholds established within Netherlandish paintings, sculptures, and manuscript illuminations become sites where artists could address relations between life and death, aristocrat and peasant, holy and profane, and man and God—and where artists could exploit the "betwixt and between" nature of the threshold to communicate, paradoxically, both connections and divisions between these different states and different worlds. Building on literary and anthropological interpretations of liminality, this book demonstrates how the exploration of boundaries in Netherlandish art infused the works with greater meaning. The book's probing of the -- often ignored --meanings of the threshold motif casts new light on key works of Netherlandish art.

Book Synopsis Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air, Done at Montreal on 28 May 1999 (Montreal Convention of 1999) by : Elmar Giemulla
Download or read book Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules for International Carriage by Air, Done at Montreal on 28 May 1999 (Montreal Convention of 1999) written by Elmar Giemulla and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 894 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of controversy, a unified liability system for international carriage by air was established by the Montreal Convention of 1999, which went into force in November 2003. The new convention replaced the legal labyrinth created by the numerous perplexing accretions that had attached themselves to the Warsaw Convention. In this indispensable volume, air law professionals will find the full English text of the Convention with detailed article-by-article annotation, including all developments to date in case law, legal literature, national and international legislation, and administrative law. The commentary covers ongoing developments in such crucial aspects as the following: applicability of the Convention; documents for carriage; liability for death or injury of passengers; liability for damages to baggage and cargo and for delay; exoneration from liability; carriage involving a contractual and an actual carrier; time limits for filing a claim and forfeiture; jurisdiction; exclusivity of the Convention versus applicability of national law; and insurance issues. In addition to the article-by-article annotation, the book features such useful information as a synopsis comparing the Warsaw and Montreal Conventions, IATA Conditions and Resolutions, relevant European Union Regulations, and a list of the contracting parties to the Convention. Given that the Montreal Convention’s application during its first 20 years has already documented a promising and forceful new beginning in the complex area of air transport liability, this incomparable research tool will provide an enormous wealth of information and guidance for anyone who deals with legal issues arising from civil air law, including lawyers, policymakers, insurers and academics.

Book Synopsis Beyond the Image Machine by : David Tomas
Download or read book Beyond the Image Machine written by David Tomas and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Image Machine is an eloquent and stimulating argument for an alternative history of scientific and technological imaging systems. Drawing on a range of hitherto and marginalised examples from the world of visual representation and the work of key theorists and thinkers, such as Latour, de Certeau, McLuhan and Barthes, David Tomas offers a disarticulated and deviant view of the relationship between archaic and new representations, imaging technologies and media induced experience. Rejecting the possibility of absolute forms of knowledge, Tomas shows how new media technologies have changed the nature of established disciplines. The book develops Tomas's own theory of transcultural space and makes several original contributions to current debates on the culture of advanced technology.

Book excerpt: "The Final EIS differs from the Draft because of adjustments in the baseline (or No Action Alternative) and changes to some of the assumptions and data used for the original analysis. These changes are: 1) a decrease of the projected coal production from the study region without new Federal coal leasing; 2) earlier anticipated dates for construction and mining for the proposed coal lease tracts; 3) refinement of the coal reserves and projected production from the coal lease tracts"--Page 9, volume 1.
