Exploring the state of history and the struggle over its ownership throughout the world, the authors address the issues of globalization, postmodernism, and postcolonialism that have been largely ignored by practicing historians despite their importance to cultural studies and their relevance to history. Engaging in a vigorous critique of Eurocentrism, the volume at the same time reaffirms the importance of historical ways of knowing.

Book Synopsis Learning Lessons From Waco by : Jayne Seminare Docherty
Download or read book Learning Lessons From Waco written by Jayne Seminare Docherty and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heated debates about "what really happened in Waco" are a recurring public drama. Yet, little or no attention has been given to the work of the negotiators who talked with the Branch Davidians. In this important book, Jayne Seminare Docherty utilizes largely unexplored sources of data to explain why fifty-one days of negotiations by federal officials failed to get all of the Branch Davidians to exit the compound. Learning Lessons from Waco applies a theory of worldview conflicts to the more than 12,000 pages of the negotiation transcripts from Waco. Through perceptive analysis of the situation, Docherty offers a fresh perspective on the activities of law enforcement agents. She shows how the Waco conflict resulted from a collision of two distinct worldviews—the FBI's and the Davidians'—and their divergent notions of reality. By exploring the failures of the negotiations, she also urges a better understanding of encounters between rising religious movements and dominant social institutions. Finally, the resulting model is applicable to other conflict resolution processes such as mediation and facilitated problem solving.
Book Synopsis The End of the Cold War and The Third World by : Artemy Kalinovsky
Download or read book The End of the Cold War and The Third World written by Artemy Kalinovsky and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together recent research on the end of the Cold War in the Third World and engages with ongoing debates about regional conflicts, the role of great powers in the developing world, and the role of international actors in conflict resolution. Most of the recent scholarship on the end of the Cold War has focused on Europe or bilateral US-Soviet relations. By contrast, relatively little has been written on the end of the Cold War in the Third World: in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. How did the great transformation of the world in the late 1980s affect regional conflicts and client relationships? Who "won" and who "lost" in the Third World and why do so many Cold War-era problems remain unresolved? This book brings to light for the first time evidence from newly declassified archives in Russia, the United States, Eastern Europe, as well as from private collections, recent memoirs and interviews with key participants. It goes further than anything published so far in systematically explaining, both from the perspectives of the superpowers and the Third World countries, what the end of bipolarity meant not only for the underdeveloped periphery so long enmeshed in ideological, socio-political and military conflicts sponsored by Washington, Moscow or Beijing, but also for the broader patterns of international relations. This book will be of much interest to students of the Cold War, war and conflict studies, third world and development studies, international history, and IR in general.

Book Synopsis Third Worlds Within by : Daniel Widener
Download or read book Third Worlds Within written by Daniel Widener and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Third Worlds Within, Daniel Widener expands conceptions of the struggle for racial justice by reframing antiracist movements in the United States in a broader internationalist context. For Widener, antiracist struggles at home are connected to and profoundly shaped by similar struggles abroad. Drawing from an expansive historical archive and his own activist and family history, Widener explores the links between local and global struggles throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He uncovers what connects seemingly disparate groups like Japanese American and Black communities in Southern California or American folk musicians and revolutionary movements in Asia. He also centers the expansive vision of global Indigenous movements, the challenges of Black/Brown solidarity, and the influence of East Asian organizing on the US Third World Left. In the process, Widener reveals how the fight against racism unfolds both locally and globally and creates new forms of solidarity. Highlighting the key strategic role played by US communities of color in efforts to defeat the conjoined forces of capitalism, racism, and imperialism, Widener produces a new understanding of history that informs contemporary social struggle.
Book Synopsis China and the Three Worlds: A Foreign Policy Reader by : King C. Chen
Download or read book China and the Three Worlds: A Foreign Policy Reader written by King C. Chen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 1979. The "reopening" of China in 1971 by President Richard Nixon has already been regarded as a turning point of China's foreign policy and international politics. It has facilitated the reestablishment of Peking's diplomatic relations after the Cultural Revolution, broadened the dimension of China' s international political, economic, and cultural activities, and promoted China's campaign against hegemonism of the superpowers. Its impact on China' s relationships with the outside world, particularly the United States and Third World countries, is immeasurable. This volume explores the the "three-world" theory is China's (Mao Tse-tung's) new concept of world politics after the Sino-American rapprochement. This concept, originally developed from the Soviet "twocamp" theory of 1947, has an immediate connection with Peking's "intermediate zone" theory of 1964.
Book Synopsis The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism by : Gosta Esping-Andersen
Download or read book The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism written by Gosta Esping-Andersen and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1990-01-23 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few discussions in modern social science have occupied as much attention as the changing nature of welfare states in Western societies. The author here provides a new analysis of the character and role of welfare states in the functioning of contemporary advanced Western societies. The author distinguishes three major types of welfare state, connecting these with variations in the historical development of different Western countries. He argues that current economic processes, such as those moving toward a postindustrial order, are shaped not by autonomous market forces but by the nature of states and state differences.
