Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a treatise on family history and is primarily about three gentlemen and a woman. They represent ancestors, from three different generations, who nobly carried their family torch and established high standards to which succeeding generations would aspire. These ancestors respectively, are two male slaves, the son of a freed slave and a daughter of the son of a freed slave. Their lives spanned three vastly different eras of American history, and each of them remarkably exhibited immense courage, patience, intelligence, insight, resourcefulness, the ability to endure, the willingness to struggle and the faith to sacrifice against all odds. Embedded in their landscapes were enormous setbacks, perils and personal tragedy, however each of them elected to move forward in a bold and ambitious manner like the iconic Iron Horse. At a juncture in American history when our individual futures are severely challenged, these four are featured because their stories are very illuminating, because they were, under the circumstances, heroic ancestors who withstood many of the challenges of their eras, because they possessed great character, and not because of any amount of materiality they accumulated. Their stories serve to memorialize the victims of bondage and Jim Crow and to communicate the history, culture and principles of two proud American families. There are noted ancestors of other families across this great country that deserve a similar distinction and maybe this treatise will inspire such an undertaking.

Download or read book Horizons West written by Jim Kitses and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When first published in 1969, Horizons West was immediately recognised as the definitive critical account of the Western film and some of its key directors. This greatly expanded new edition is, like the original, written in a graceful, penetrating and absorbingly readable style. It provides definitive critical analysis of the six greatest film-makers of the Western genre: John Ford, Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, Sam Peckinpah, Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood. And it offers illuminating accounts of such classic Westerns as The Searchers, Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, Once Upon a Time in the West, Shane and many more. Among the completely new material in this edition is Kitses's magisterial account of the work of the greatest of Western directors, John Ford. Kitses also assesses how the Western has been challenged by revisionist historical accounts of the West and the Western, and by movement such as feminism, postmodernism, multiculturalism and psychoanalysis. The product of a lifetime's labour and love, Horizons West is a landmark of scholarship and interpretation devoted to, what is for many, Hollywood's signature genre. It provides a compelling account of the powerful mythology of America's past as forged by Western films and the men who made them.

Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, and stepmother, Kate, on their farm in Illinois, the family conceals Benji’s true identity as a child born from a liaison between an officer and a geisha—and instead tells everyone that he is an orphan. When the truth surfaces, it will splinter this family’s fragile dynamic and send Benji on the journey of a lifetime from Illinois to the Japanese settlements in Denver and San Francisco, then across the ocean to Nagasaki, where he will uncover the truth about his mother’s tragic death. Don’t miss the exclusive conversation between Angela Davis-Gardner and Jennifer Egan at the back of the book.

Book Synopsis The Iron Horse at War by : James E. Valle
Download or read book The Iron Horse at War written by James E. Valle and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is primarily a collection of professional photographs showing how the railroads coped with the tremendous surge of traffic engendered by World War II. Prime attraction of course is the reappearance of the steam engine on the rails of the land, and the few diesels shown are of a vintage considered historical by today's collectors. To transport war materiel and personnel, all equipment was needed. In fact much of it, after years of Depression-bred neglect, was in poor condition for the four-year wartime stint. This was a period of great opportunity for all photographers, but one among them, Jack Delano, was assigned by the U.S. Office of War Information to make a definitive study of wartime railroading." --From back cover of jacket.
