Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Fundamental Principles of the Spiritual Life A certain Persian prince was a great friend to learning. From all directions he gathered together learned writings for his library, and wherever he went his books had to accompany him. They, however, became after a time no small burden. He then com missioned some learned men to abridge the wisdom of the accumulated books into a num ber of volumes that could be conveniently carried on a camel. But as he found even this too laborious an undertaking after a time, the various books were further epito mized into one book, and finally this single volume into a smgle rule of life which the prince could carry everywhere without any trouble. And so all was easier and better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Principles and Practices, of the Spiritual Life Must begin as they are, with their many sins and imperfections and ignorances, and work on towards an end that becomes clearer as they advance, and yet ever more difficult of attain ment. Indeed, they have to work towards an end which at first they cannot see, for only as the eye of the soul becomes purified does it get to see clearly what holiness means, and how imperfect were its first conceptions of it. It is a good thing, therefore, to concentrate our efforts, to be definite in our aim, to set before ourselves clearly some one purpose, some special virtue to strive after, upon the attainment of which we shall have advanced considerably towards holi ness of life. Study our Bibles from the Spiritual standpoint and that is why we find many who disbelieve in this spiritual power, and they do not under stand the fundamental principles of life. As God created Adam and Eve, so did he create us, likewise we all take God's life into our bodies and become a living animated man. The Spiritual powers have wonderful means and system through which they Operate for the good and welfare of man. Gonse quently we must not lose sight of the great Spiritual-power if we want to have an intelligent awakening as living, thinking beings. Men of today can be selected for instructors if they would live so their minds could be attuned to the Spiritual vi bration. The fact remains that the Bible was written and it contains historical facts and spiritual truths from the begin ning of the book to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of the Interior or Hidden Life: Designed Particularly for the Considerable of Those Who Are Seeking Assurance of Faith and Perfect Love Tunas is a modification or form of religious expe rience which may conveniently, and probably with a considerable degree of propriety, be denominated the Interior or Hidden Life. When a person first becomes distinctly conscious of his sinfulness, and, in connection with this experience, exercises faith in Christ as a Savior from sin, there is no doubt, however feeble these early exercises may be, that he has truly entered upon a new life. But this new life, although it is in its element dif ferent from that of the world, is only in its beginning. It embraces, undoubtedly, the true principle of arestored and renovated existence, which in due time will expand itself into heights and depths of knowledge and of feeling; but it is now only in a state of incipiency, main taining, and oftentimes but feehly maintaining, a war with the anterior or natural life, and being nothing more at present than the early rays and dawnings of the brighter day that is coming. Next to the Bible itself, the lives of the Saints and their written counsel are the surest guides to holiness. Their experience is always an inspira tion. Their counsel never grows Old. But they are often too little known. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. In this formula that Christians recite as though on autopilot lie the secrets for healing our world, rekindling our visionary imagination, and manifesting the Kingdom of Heaven on earth. It’s an astonishing claim, but one that is supported by Cynthia Bourgeault’s exploration of Trinitarian theology—and by her bold work in further articulating the deep truth it contains. She looks to the ancient concept in light of the ideas of G. I. Gurdjieff and Jacob Boehme to reveal the Trinity as the "hidden driveshaft" within Christianity: the compassionate expression of the Uncreated Reality in creation.

Garrigou-Lagrange sets forth the classic Catholic traditions on the spiritual life as the full flowering of Sanctifying Grace in the soul. He explains the three stages of the spiritual life-- the Purgative Way; the Illuminative Way; and the Unitive Way--showing the transitions or conversions from one period to another. A classic work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Interior Life: Simplified and Reduced to Its Fundamental Principle The pages of this invaluable book are not from my pen; and yet they are mine so far as a religious may venture to say so. Their writer gave them me in manuscript with full liberty to do what I liked with them. Contrary to his expectation, but not without his authority, I decided to have them published as soon as I had pondered them. They had procured me inward enjoyment, and (thank God), I venture to hope, true spiritual profit. I should have blamed myself had I kept them to myself, and I remembered the words of the Wise Man: "I have learned without guile and communicate wisdom without envy; and her riches I hide not." What, then, did this manuscript contain? Substantially, nothing new; for, starting from the well-known Fundamental Principle of St. Ignatius, admirably commented on, it reaches conclusions that the simplest of logic suffices to deduce. But it is just the simplicity and unanswerable logic of the argument, and the astonishing richness of the Scriptural texts wherewith it is corroborated, which have delighted me. In these latter days, indeed, there is a great dearth of spiritual treatises primarily arresting the intelligence, persuading it by means of reason and faith, and compelling it to set the will towards duty and perfection. How different is the solidity of such a foundation from that of sentimentalism, so much exploited in these days in the service, or rather, to the prejudice, of piety! Is feeling, then, excluded from these pages ? One would think so, on opening them and seeing the author's efforts to reduce it to a secondary role. Nevertheless, soon, in the light of his clear and irrefutable teaching, arises a warmth that wins the heart.
