Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume in a three-volume exposition of Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics" explores a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. This is the first volume in a three-volume exposition of Martin Shubik's vision of "mathematical institutional economics"--a term he coined in 1959 to describe the theoretical underpinnings needed for the construction of an economic dynamics. The goal is to develop a process-oriented theory of money and financial institutions that reconciles micro- and macroeconomics, using as a prime tool the theory of games in strategic and extensive form. The approach involves a search for minimal financial institutions that appear as a logical, technological, and institutional necessity, as part of the "rules of the game." Money and financial institutions are assumed to be the basic elements of the network that transmits the sociopolitical imperatives to the economy. Volume 1 deals with a one-period approach to economic exchange with money, debt, and bankruptcy. Volume 2 explores the new economic features that arise when we consider multi-period finite and infinite horizon economies. Volume 3 will consider the specific role of financial institutions and government, and formulate the economic financial control problem linking micro- and macroeconomics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collects 28 reprinted essays written by Musgrave (political economy, emeritus, Harvard U. and economics, U. of California-Santa Cruz) dating as far back as 1972 but primarily written in the late 1990s. The initial essays address the larger picture of the nature and function of fiscal institutions, drawing on fiscal thought represented by German Finanzwissenschaft, Wicksell's Scandinavian model, and the utilitarian base of the British model and its Pigouvian synthesis of equitable and efficient taxation. Next, aspects of tax equity and distributive justice are covered. Considerations of fiscal issues posed by the spatial and vertical organization of the state are also presented, followed by treatment of budget growth and the popular claim that budgets tend to be too large. Essays in the concluding section focus on the ever-present problem of tax reform, particularly the norms of "good" policy and how it can best be reached in practice. Book excerpt: Economics of Education: A Selected Annotated Bibliography is an annotated bibliography of the economics of education. The criterion of selection is a simple one: whether the country or area study contributes to fundamental generalization about the economic aspects or economic role of education. The literature on developed countries is distinguished from that dealing with the developing nations. Comprised of 12 chapters, this volume begins with a list of topics for developed countries, including the economics and politics of education; educational planning; manpower forecasting; and social mobility and reserves of talent. The same topics are addressed in the second part for developing countries. The bibliography covers topics ranging from the theory of economic growth and the role of education in social change to the problems of labor and management in economic growth; the role of education in social and economic development; the economics of public education; and the economics of human resources. This book will be of interest to economists and educators.

This book was released on 2020-01-06 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on lectures conducted for two classes at the Maxwell School, Syracuse University: A Public Finance Seminar for PhD students in public administration and State and Local Public Finance for master's students in public administration.Topics covered include the role of voters in a federal system, the sorting of different households into different communities, the determinants of public service costs, the property tax and other sources of local (and state) revenue, fiscal aspects of economic development, and intergovernmental aid (especially for education). The notes for the Ph.D. class also cover several more advanced topics, such as the estimation of education production and cost functions, the capitalization of school quality into house values, and tax competition among jurisdictions. The focus in these notes is on the highly decentralized federal system in the United States, but many of the principles and much of the behavioral analysis in the class apply to other countries as well. These notes draw on Professor Yinger's extensive teaching experience and publication record in state and local public finance. They should prove useful to many teachers, scholars, and students who find topics in state and local public finance that they wish to pursue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economics can be a lens for understanding the behavior of schools, districts, states, and nations in meeting education needs of their populaces, as well as for understanding the individual decisions made by administrators, teachers, and students. Insights from economics help decision makers at the state level understand how to raise and distribute funds for public schools in an equitable manner for both schools and taxpayers. Economics also can assist researchers in analyzing effects of school spending and teacher compensation on student outcomes. And economics can provide important insights into public debates on issues such as whether to offer vouchers for subsidizing student attendance at private schools. This two-volume encyclopedia contains over 300 entries by experts in the field that cover these issues and more. Features: This work of 2 volumes (in both print and electronic formats) contains 300-350 signed entries by significant figures in the field. Entries conclude with cross-references and suggestions for further readings to guide students to in-depth resources. Although organized in A-to-Z fashion, a thematic "Reader’s Guide" in the front matter groups related entries by topic. Also in the front matter, a chronology provides students with historical perspective on the development of education economics and finance as a field of study The entire work concludes with a Resources appendix and a comprehensive Index. Book Synopsis Three Essays on Teacher Labor Markets in Thailand by : Pumsaran Tongliemnak
Download or read book Three Essays on Teacher Labor Markets in Thailand written by Pumsaran Tongliemnak and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2010 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first essay of this dissertation examines the role of teacher characteristics in schools on student outcomes using datasets from TIMSS 1999 and TIMSS 2007 international tests. Taking an advantage that students have to take both mathematics and science subjects from different teachers, I use the method of First Difference (FD) analysis in order to remove the potential biases between teacher attributes and unobserved student characteristics. The findings show some contradictory outcomes between the FD analysis and ordinary least squares (OLS) analysis. The second essay looks into the problem of recruitment of well-qualified high school and college graduates to work as primary and secondary school teachers. I compare teacher salaries and benefits vis-à-vis other mathematics and science-oriented professions namely medical professions, engineers, accountants, scientists and nurses. In addition, I compare incomes between people who graduate from teacher colleges and non-teacher colleges. Using data from Thailand Labor Force Survey from 1985 to 2005, I find that teachers are the most poorly paid of all professions, including nurses. The difference in terms of an opportunity cost between male and female teachers is also striking. Among the graduates from teacher colleges, male graduates earn more than their peers if they chose other occupations whereas female graduates earn less if they make other choices. The third essay looks at the reasons teachers choose part-time jobs, the type of jobs they choose, and the amount of income they receive from these jobs, as well as factors influencing these decisions. I find that approximately 20-25% of Thai teachers participated in moonlighting activities. The majority of them have part-time jobs including tutoring, selling food and other products, and farming. Low salaries and high level of indebtedness are the most important factors associated with the increased likelihood of having a part-time job. However, economic status does not correlate significantly with their decision to tutor as their part-time job.
