Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic interaction occurs whenever it depends on others what one finally obtains: on markets, in firms, in politics etc. Game theorists analyse such interaction normatively, using numerous different methods. The rationalistic approach assumes perfect rationality whereas behavioral theories take into account cognitive limitations of human decision makers. In the animal kingdom one usually refers to evolutionary forces when explaining social interaction. The volume contains innovative contributions, surveys of previous work and two interviews which shed new light on these important topics of the research agenda. The contributions come from highly regarded researchers from all over the world who like to express in this way their intellectual inspiration by the Nobel-laureate Reinhard Selten.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three papers in this dissertation are entirely self-contained. The papers are linked both through the methodologies used and through the issues addressed. Each of the paper seeks to understand the complexity effects of market design issues by using agent-based computational economic approach. The first essay addresses the question of which auction pricing rule should Treasury use that yields the highest revenue, especially whether the Treasury should use a discriminatory-price rule or a uniform-price one. Computational experiments are carefully designed based on four treatment factors: (1) the buyers' learning representation; (2) the number of buyers participating in the auction; (3) the total security demand capacity of buyers relative to the Treasury offered security supply (4) volatility of security prices in the secondary market. Key findings in this study show that Treasury revenue varies systematically with changes of treatments factor. The second essay tries to answer the question of what is the best bidding rule for multi-unit sealed-bid double auctions. Extending the earlier theoretical work which suggested that submitting supply offers in the form of price-quantity supply functions P(Q) will benefit the seller under one-sided auction with uncertain demand. However, this study results show that under double-sided multi-unit auction in which seller face a similar uncertain demand, submitting P(Q) supply offers not necessarily benefited sellers. Moreover, strategic interaction effects among players using P(Q) rules can lower sellers profit and overall market efficiency. Such insights are critical, especially to market designers who are concerned about the detailed aspects of market design implementation. The third essay addresses the experimental testing of the recently proposed wholesale power market design by Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. This Wholesale Power Market Platform (WPMP) is a complex market that requires market participants to simultaneously bid into real-time, day-ahead, ancillary, and transmission rights markets. The study main goals are to gain understanding the nature of this complex market design, at the same time to test whether WPMP design results in efficient, fair, robust market operations overtime, especially under conditions in which participants' strive to gain market power through strategic pricing, capacity withholding, and any other imaginable strategies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely and topical look at the role of ethics in fieldwork takes into account some of the major issues confronting qualitative researchers. The main purposes of this book are twofold: to promote an understanding of the harmful possibilities of fieldwork; and to provide ways of dealing with ethical problems and dilemmas. To these ends, examples of actual fieldwork are provided that address ethical problems and dilemmas, and posit ways of dealing with them.
Book Synopsis The Strategic Role of Information in Markets and Games by : Andreas G. B. Ziegler

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis consists of three essays that study how the public revelation of information affects strategic interaction across three different environments. Using laboratory experiments to test theoretical conjectures, the essays analyze how humans process information, reason about how others process information, and what their choices reveal about the information they privately hold. The first chapter compares auction formats that differ in the degree of information revealed to bidders during the auction. Bidders in the laboratory are not able to learn about the value of the item for sale from revealed information, and popular open auction formats trigger behavioral biases, which increases the auctioneer’s revenues. The second chapter studies how interacting in markets affects the participants’ concern about causing externalities. Markets overall decrease our concern for damages to third parties. However, markets that allow each participant to trade repeatedly while not being pivotal for aggregate outcomes most strongly erode such concerns. The third chapter studies how to best persuade a strategically interacting audience by using public or private communication. Empirically, public communication is particularly effective. In line with theoretical predictions, senders also benefit from adjusting their persuasion to the presence of coordination motives in the strategic interaction of the audience."--

Book Synopsis Strategic Interaction by : Erving Goffman
Download or read book Strategic Interaction written by Erving Goffman and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two essays in this classic work by sociologist Erving Goffman deal with the calculative, gamelike aspects of human interaction. Goffman examines the strategy of words and deeds; he uses the term "strategic interaction" to describe gamelike events in which an individual's situation is fully dependent on the move of one's opponent and in which both players know this and have the wit to use this awareness for advantage. Goffman aims to show that strategic interaction can be isolated analytically from the general study of communication and face-to-face interaction. The first essay addresses expression games, in which a participant spars to discover the value of information given openly or unwittingly by another. The author uses vivid examples from espionage literature and high-level political intrigue to show how people mislead one another in the information game. Both observer and observed create evidence that is false and uncover evidence that is real. In "Strategic Interaction," the book's second essay, action is the central concern, and expression games are secondary. Goffman makes clear that often, when it seems that an opponent sets off a course of action through verbal communication, he really has a finger on your trigger, your chips on the table, or your check in his bank. Communication may reinforce conduct, but in the end, action speaks louder. Those who gamble with their wits, and those who study those who do, will find this analysis important and stimulating.

Book Synopsis Three Essays on Social Interactions and Education by : Rokhaya Dieye

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to investigate identification of peer effects and their application on a large set of outcomes, going from school attendance to obesity. The relevance of this research relies on three main points: 1) it allows better measurrement of effects stemming from social interactions, thus providing some answer to the numerous econometric issues that make the study of peer effects a lot challenging; 2) it improves our comprehension of negative social phenomena, including the incidence of school dropouts and obesity; 3) it proposes better public policies aiming at fighting against such phenomena by exploiting social network effects that contribute to amplify them. The different objectives of this thesis are investigated in three different chapters. The first chapter proposes a new strategy for estimating the influence of the social network on individual decisions in a network context using randomized experiments. It combinates the structural social network model developed by Bramoullé et al. [2009] and randomized experiments. New identification conditions that mostly require balance in the characteristics of friends between treatment and control groups are provided. The model is estimated and validated on experimental data collected for the evaluation of a scholarship program in Colombia. By design, randomization is at the student-level. Friendship data reveals that treated and untreated students interact together. Besides providing evidence of peer effects in schooling, the chapter concludes that ignoring peer effects would have led to an overestimation of the program actual impact. The aim of the second chapter is to propose a model that accounts for heterogeneity in peer effects between individual categories in a network setting. Identification conditions of a network-based interactions model that generalizes the one proposed by Bramoullé et al. [2009] are derived, and heterogeneity of peer effects is allowed within and between categories of individuals. Using the Add-Health dataset, the study explores heterogeneity in adolescents weight using both gender and racial categorizations. The results show that the positive endogenous effect found using the homogeneous model is actually heterogeneous when considering both gender and racial categorizations, as for example, females seem to be more influenced by their female friends than by their male friends. While the first two chapters consider friendship networks in an attempt to identify the effects that result from social interactions, the third chapter considers the course-overlaps network. The model is local agregate and has the feature, unlike other studies of peer effects, that the interaction matrix accounts for the extensive and intensive margins. Interactions of this type are better to design school policies. The chapter then proceeds to estimation of peer effects in overall GPA and GPAs in both mathematics and science courses using the Add Heakth and AHAA datasets. The results reveal the presence of positive and significant social interaction effects using both 2SLS and GMM estimation techniques.
