The first chapter investigates the electoral effects of a local public good provision, using a local food subsidy program that took place in Turkey, 2019. Exploiting the variation in the geographical distances of voters to the food subsidy program groceries, I establish three results. First, the food subsidy program has a statistically significant positive effect on the incumbent vote share. Second, the effects of the program are conditional on partisanship. Although the effects of the incumbent vote share do not change across different partisan groups, the effects on turnout are heterogeneous and countervailing across partisans of incumbent and opposition party. Finally, I find that much of the electoral effects of the program come from areas where voters are uniformly partisans of either party rather than from areas with mixed partisan profiles. The second chapter investigates the evolution of class distinctiveness in economic preferences across countries and over time. To this end, I first develop a new measure of class distinctiveness by using predictive modeling. I then estimate this new measure for 18 European countries for three points in time using micro-level survey data. After validating the newly developed measure, I test whether the variation in the strength of class-based voting can be explained by the class distinctiveness in economic preferences. In the third chapter, co-authored with Nicole Stoelinga, we test whether hosting or bidding on the Olympic games leads to an increase in the exports of the host and bidding countries. Previous studies on this question provide mixed findings and typically suffer from empirical problems such as selection bias. We re-evaluate the problem by applying a synthetic control approach. Our results indicate that hosting or bidding on the Olympic Games may affect exports positively or negatively depending on the countries' initial reputation in terms of trade.

La recerca que aquí es presenta aplica desenvolupaments als metodes de recerca empirica que milloren la fiabilitat dels resultats. En el segon capitol s'estima l'impacte d'un aconteixement sorpresa a nivell polític sobre els retorns financers del mercat espanyol. Això inclou els impactes específics en determinats sectors i empreses que estan connectades políticament. En els últims dies de la campanya electoral per les eleccions generals espanyoles de l'any 2004, atacs terroristes van causar la mort de 191 persones que viatjaven en tren a la capital del país, Madrid. Quatre dies mes tard, el partit a l'oposició va guanyar les eleccions generals, en contra de totes les prediccions i enquestes que s'havien fet anteriorment a l'acció terrorista. Aquest canvi d'expectatives presenta una oportunitat única per aplicar tècniques d'event study per contrastar hipòtesis de política econòmica. L'anàlisi mostra que les hipòtesis de captura de polítics per empreses, junt amb problemes d'agència en empreses privatitzades i amb dispersió accionarial, no són rebutjades per les dades. En el tercer capítol, intento superar algunes de les limitacions de la recerca empírica en aquest camp, i exploro l'impacte de les connexions polítiques a les empreses en el rendiment empresarial. Ho faig fent servint les dos principals tècniques empíriques que es fan servir més comunment a la literatura economica: anàlisi centrat en establir les reaccions dels mercats financers a esdeveniments d'índole política; i anàlisi economètric de l'impacte de les connexions polítiques en el rendiment contable de les empreses. Els resultats de l'anàlisi indiquen que en els primers anys dels segle XXI, les connexions polítiques podrien haver tingut un impact negatiu sobre el rendiment de les empreses espanyoles. Tot i que els resultats basats en les reaccions dels mercats financers no són concloents, l'anàlisi economètric sobre mesures contables mostra una relació negativa i estadísticament significativa entre connexions polítiques i beneficis empresarials. Els resultats son consistents quan s'utilitzen diferents variables per mesurar el nivell de connexions polítiques, i també sota diverses especificacions economètriques que incloen regressions amb mètodes de variables instrumentals. Finalment, el capítol 4 considera l'influencia del sector privat en les decisions preses des de l'administració pública. Això contrasta amb l'anàlisi presentat en els dos capítols anteriors i a la majoria de recerca empírica en aquest camp, on el que es considera es generalment l'impacte de les connexions polítiques sobre els resultats econòmics empresarials. L'anàlisi està basat en dades del Regne Unit sobre la concessió de subsidis a empreses per dur a terme recerca i desenvolupament. L'agència responsable de la concessió de subsidis al Regne Unit, la Technology Strategy Board, s'encarrega en primer lloc d'identificar àrees de prioritat tecnològica. Un cop aquestes arees són aprovades i dotades de recursos pel Govern, l'agència s'encarrega de convocar concursos i seleccionar les propostes guanyadores. Els resultats de l'anàlisi suggereixen que el programa de subsidis, tot i ser efectiu en corretgir alguns errors de mercat, està esbiaixat en la distribució dels subsidis cap a aquelles empreses que estan directament connectades amb l'agència.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three independent essays in empirical political economy. In the first chapter I study how populist representation affects other parties' ideological positions. I use variation created by close elections to identify ideological shifts resulting from a change in party representation, holding voter preferences constant. I use candidate level survey data from a voting advice application, and I model candidates' responses using item response theory to obtain measures of political ideology. I show that higher populist representation causes mainstream parties to become more ideologically aligned with the populist party. The results demonstrate that increased populist representation can spread populist ideologies. In the second chapter I investigate whether social media affects occurrence of conflict. I focus on the ongoing Myanmar conflict because in such context internet is mainly accessed via mobile phones and the Facebook app in particular. I take advantage of a shock in Facebook availability and use local variation in cell phone coverage as an exogenous determinant of social media availability. I find that social media availability decreases conflict, especially organised violence involving rebel groups. The analysis also reveals significant heterogeneity, suggesting that inflammatory content on social media may escalate conflict in areas with deep ethnic cleavages. In the third chapter, jointly with Nikolaj Broberg and Thomas Walsh, we investigate how political alignment affects implementation of punitive welfare measures in the UK. We use a regression discontinuity design based on close elections to compare the rate of sanctions to unemployment benefits across constituencies that are aligned or unaligned with the government. We find that implementation of the sanction regime is significantly more lenient in constituencies won by the government parties. Our findings suggest pork barrel politics can also influence the allocation of economic "bads", even within a highly centralised system, and can undermine institutions which should be neutral to local partisan considerations.

The first chapter is an empirical investigation of social change, looking at the Prohibition Era in the U.S. It explores how the implementation of policies affects the evolution of beliefs about their effects, giving rise to a feedback between preferences and policy choices. Using city-level data on law enforcement and crime, it estimates a structural model where crime outcomes are the result of Prohibition enforcement, and lead to changes in public opinion about Alcohol-related policies. Enforcement depends on moral views and beliefs, but only beliefs are shaped by the outcomes of past policies. The model can account for the variation in public opinion changes, and for the heterogeneous responses of enforcement and violence across cities. Its estimates are used to perform a series of counterfactual exercises. The second chapter is a theoretical investigation of entrenchment and encroachment of rulers. It studies the strategic interaction between competition and ratchet effect incentives in a coalition-formation game of incomplete information. Rulers require the support of a subset of politically powerful groups to remain in power. These have private information about their cost of providing political support. A ruler can attempt to exploit the competitive nature of the coalition formation game to induce revelation. Its ability to do so determines the extent of entrenchment and encroachment. By restricting attention to Markov Perfect Bayesian equilibria, the model shows that limited learning is possible, and that learning dynamics are shaped by an informational commitment problem arising when rulers are "too optimistic". In joint work with James Robinson, the final chapter is a comparative empirical study of the impact of Frontier availability on long-run development across the Americas. It calls into question the notion of American exceptionalism due to its Westward Frontier, first proposed by Frederick J. Turner. Almost every country in the Americas had a substantial Frontier, but its allocation varied due to differences in the quality of political institutions around the mid-19* century, making the effect of the Frontier conditional on political institutions at the time of Frontier expansion. The empirical evidence is consistent with this "conditional Turner thesis".

The first paper examines the effect of opposition representation on policies adopted by municipal councils in France. The opposition is thought to play an important role in a variety of political institutions, but its impact is generally difficult to measure due to the usual problems with observational studies. In French municipalities, an unusual electoral rule creates a rare natural experiment that I exploit to measure the impact of the opposition's presence on several areas of policy. I find that the opposition tends to moderate personnel spending, a major budget component; the opposition also appears to make decision-making slower, based on an analysis of municipal confederation decisions. The findings suggest that even a relatively powerless opposition can have an impact on policies adopted in a deliberative body.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of three essays on economics focusing on the determinants of regime change and economic growth. I put the focus primarily on political, institutional, and historical factors. I started working on these topics after studying the importance of regime change and institutions in the modern economics literature. The first essay analyzes how media can be a powerful tool to promote regime change in tightly controlled political systems. I analyze the impact of Radio Liberty, an American radio with an anti-communist slant, on the 1991 Russian elections, which were the first elections in the country, to study the role of Western media on the demise of the Soviet Union. I use a novel empirical strategy exploiting ionospheric variation with the aim of obtaining a measure of Radio Liberty availability in each Russian electoral district. The results show a significant effect of these broadcasts in favor of Yeltsin, documenting that media can play an important role in political processes of regime change. In the second essay, I analyze the persistent effects of the territorial division in Spain between the Christian kingdoms in the north and Islamic Iberia in the center and south of the country during the Middle Ages. I analyze this question empirically using a spatial donut discontinuity design which compares Christian and Muslim territories exploiting the dynamics of the reconquest process undertaken by the Christians which resulted in the Muslim defeat. I find important differences in current municipal economic development with substantial positive effects in Christian municipalities. The third essay analyzes the importance of protests for regime change. I provide empirical evidence that protests have a significant and non-linear impact on the likelihood that a country successfully democratizes. I show that it is for intermediate values of protests that the likelihood of democratization is higher. I present a dynamic model to explain the empirical evidence. The main implication is that protests could play an important role for regime change as long as they are not too high because in the latter case there will be a backlash which will block regime change.

Though the applications differ, the chapters share a common methodological approach: each chapter first develops a microeconomic model of behavior and then estimates the parameters of the model using observational data. The first chapter, "The Informational Content of Campaign Advertising, " examines alternative mechanisms for the influence of political advertising on voter behavior. Using a dataset of advertising exposures and election outcomes in statewide elections, I measure how much of advertising's effectiveness can be attributed to the provision of information to voters, and how much to non-informative or "persuasive" effects. I find small but nontrivial advertising effects, of which almost all can be attributed to the persuasive channel. The second chapter, "Dividing the Dollar with Formulas, " proposes a model of legislative bargaining in which legislators allocate a budget subject to the constraint that allocations must be conditioned on a set of district covariates of limited dimension. I discuss some implications for the structure of coalitions and the outcomes of distributive politics, and then estimate the degree to which this constraint binds in the allocation decisions of the US Congress. I find that formulaic allocation substantially reduces Congress' ability to target funds to politically marginal districts. The final chapter, "Testing Theories of Congressional-Presidential Interaction with Veto Override Rates, " uses data on veto-override votes in Congress to test several game-theoretic models of interactions between the President and Congress. In the first chapter, I develop an economic theory of how a society's distribution of power and resources evolves over time. Multiple lineages of players compete by accumulating power, which is modeled as an asset that increases the probability of winning conflicts over resources. Given any initial distribution of power, this model provides a unique equilibrium prediction of how it will evolve over time. Three types of stable distributions are approached in the long run: inclusive, oligarchic, and dictatorial, where power is uniformly distributed among all players, a few players, or held by just one player, respectively. I show that power and resources inevitably fall into the hands of a few when political competition is left unchecked in large societies. This addresses a longstanding empirical puzzle, and I also provide policy implications for keeping inclusivity stable in large societies. In the second chapter, my co-author, Danil Dmitriev, and I consider the problem of designing a voting mechanism that is robust to derailment by external groups. We show that plurality voting and other standard mechanisms are often not robust to sabotage; in fact, it is sometimes preferable to not run any poll at all. The optimal voting mechanism is found to make saboteurs indifferent between each alternative they can vote for since this undermines their ability to adversely affect the designer's predictions of other voters' preferences. In the third chapter, I study how a sender can use verifiable binary evidence to influence a receiver about a binary state when the relevance of information is ex ante uncertain and asymmetrically known by the sender. The sender has access to two pieces of evidence: one they know to be perfectly informative of the state and one that is completely uninformative. I show that while full disclosure of evidence is possible in equilibrium, the receiver can never fully unravel which piece of evidence is relevant. Consequently, the receiver may gain little to no information about the state even when all evidence is truthfully disclosed.
