Book excerpt: For machine vision and for graphical representation of real objects in a computer environment, the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the image of a real object has become a key technique. A few methods such as range finding, which use laser scanners, computer tomography, based on CTR or MRI machines, computational stereo, etc. were developed. Computational stereo is broadly defined as the recovery of 3D characteristics of a scene from a series of images obtained from different points in the three dimensional (Euclidean) space. In this thesis, a new algorithm and system is introduced and developed for the 3D reconstruction of the images of real objects from two 2D images required with two cameras. The algorithm is based on a new matching method, a new procedure for the determination of the fundamental matrix used in stereo vision, and a new technique for stereo fusion. The novelty of the matching procedure, and of the determination of the camera alignment, consists of the projection of a structured light pattern on the real object, the pattern being created using a pseudo-random encoded mesh (PRBA) (34). The novelty of the stereo fusion algorithm consists of the application of the dynamic programming principle (DP) (5) (27) using a cost function which contains the information obtained from the list of matched points. It is also proposed to use an autoregressive (AR) modeling technique for calculating the stereo disparity of each pixel of the two images. The autoregressive filter helps the DP part of the algorithm to calculate the disparity of the pixels when the above pixels are occluded. The above proposed methods offer three distinctive advantages over a conventional stereo system: (1) It easily generates a list of matching points. (2) It adds structure to an object without textures. (3) It is less computational intensive.

Nowadays, modelling the behaviour of our brain is a fiction, that is why the huge problem of 3D perception and further, interpretation is split into a sequence of easier problems. A lot of research is involved in robot vision in order to obtain 3D information of the surrounded scene. Most of this research is based on modelling the stereopsis of humans by using two cameras as if they were two eyes. This method is known as stereo vision and has been widely studied in the past and is being studied at present, and a lot of work will be surely done in the future. This fact allows us to affirm that this topic is one of the most interesting ones in computer vision. The stereo vision principle is based on obtaining the three dimensional position of an object point from the position of its projective points in both camera image planes. However, before inferring 3D information, the mathematical models of both cameras have to be known. This step is known as camera calibration and is broadly describes in the thesis. Perhaps the most important problem in stereo vision is the determination of the pair of homologue points in the two images, known as the correspondence problem, and it is also one of the most difficult problems to be solved which is currently investigated by a lot of researchers. The epipolar geometry allows us to reduce the correspondence problem. An approach to the epipolar geometry is describes in the thesis. Nevertheless, it does not solve it at all as a lot of considerations have to be taken into account. As an example we have to consider points without correspondence due to a surface occlusion or simply due to a projection out of the camera scope. The interest of the thesis is fo.

Statische Szenenanalyse wird beispielsweise in der autonomen Navigation, für die Überwachung und für die Erhaltung des Kulturerbes eingesetzt. Andererseits eröffnet die Analyse und Rekonstruktion nicht-statischer Geometrie viel mehr Möglichkeiten, nicht nur für die bereits erwähnten Anwendungen. In der Produktion von Medieninhalten für Film und Fernsehen kann die Analyse und die Aufnahme und Wiedergabe von vollständig dreidimensionalen Inhalten verwendet werden um neue Ansichten realer Szenen zu erzeugen oder echte Schauspieler durch animierte virtuelle Charaktere zu ersetzen. Die wichtigste Voraussetzung für die Analyse von dynamischen Inhalten ist die Verfügbarkeit von zuverlässigen dreidimensionalen Szeneninformationen. Um die Entfernung von Punkten in der Szene zu bestimmen wurden meistens Stereo-Verfahren eingesetzt, aber diese Verfahren benötigen viel Rechenzeit und erreichen in Echtzeit nicht die benötigte Qualität. Leading experts including scientists involved in NASA’s Space Archaeology program provide technical introductions to five sections: 1) Historic Air and Spaceborne Imagery 2) Multispectral and Hyperspectral Imagery 3) Synthetic Aperture Radar 4) Lidar 5) Archaeological Site Detection and Modeling Each of these five sections includes two or more case study applications that have enriched understanding of archaeological landscapes in regions including the Near East, East Asia, Europe, Meso- and North America. Targeted to the needs of researchers and heritage managers as well as graduate and advanced undergraduate students, this volume conveys a basic technological sense of what is currently possible and, it is hoped, will inspire new pioneering applications. Particular attention is paid to the tandem goals of research (understanding) and archaeological heritage management (preserving) the ancient past. The technologies and applications presented can be used to characterize environments, detect archaeological sites, model sites and settlement patterns and, more generally, reveal the dialectic landscape-scale dynamics among ancient peoples and their social and environmental surroundings. In light of contemporary economic development and resultant damage to and destruction of archaeological sites and landscapes, applications of air and spaceborne technologies in archaeology are of wide utility and promoting understanding of them is a particularly appropriate goal at the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage Convention.​
