The complexity is originated from, for example, non-Newtonian behavior of body fluids, complicated geometry, as well as the interaction of muscle and fluid. With the advent of modern computational technology, both in hardware and software, gradually these problems can be resolved. The present research illustrates two such examples. Grid generation is a branch of applied mathematics that is essential for conducting numerical simulation of fluid flow. In this research, a new grid generation technique is developed and implemented in a flow solver. This technique enables one to perform grid generation for complex geometry using only a single computational zone. Fluid flow can then be analyzed without iteration between zones. The scheme is based on the composite transformation of an algebraic mapping and a mapping governed by the Laplace equation. The governing equations for the grid generation are derived first and then solved numerically. The scheme used for solving the grid generating equations is an extension of the traditional three-dimensional Douglass-Gunn scheme. Areas of extension include the inclusion of mixed derivative terms as well as first-order derivative terms. A unique feature of the proposed grid generation scheme is the concept of multi-box computational domains. In this scheme, the physical domain is mapped onto a geometry composed of many boxes in the computational space, rather than a single box as the traditional method does. The numerical solution routine is adjusted accordingly to accommodate this new feature. Grids were generated for two model geometries using the proposed grid generation software. The graft model features one inflow conduit and two outflow conduits, while the left atrium (LA) model has four inflow conduits and one outflow conduit. Flow simulation was performed using the research code INS3D, which employs the method of artificial compressibility. This method transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into a hyperbolic-parabolic set by adding to them pseudo-pressure gradient terms. The scheme is then marched along the pseudo-time axis, until the velocity field becomes divergence-free. For the flow simulation in side the graft, the effect of Reynolds number and flow-division ratio is examined ... In summary, the present research demonstrates applications of computational fluid dynamics technique in the analysis of flow in biological system. A new grid generation technique is realized, and proved to be very useful in simulating these flows. Flow simulation results provide insights into the system and may be of use for clinic reference.

Book excerpt: This research effort is directed towards an examination of issues involved in porting large computational fluid dynamics codes in use within the industry to a distributed computing environment. This effort addresses strategies for implementing the distributed computing in a device independent fashion and load balancing. A flow solver called TEAM presently in use at Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company was acquired to start this effort. The following tasks were completed: (1) The TEAM code was ported to a number of distributed computing platforms including a cluster of HP workstations located in the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech; a cluster of DEC Alpha Workstations in the Graphics visualization lab located at Georgia Tech; a cluster of SGI workstations located at NASA Ames Research Center; and an IBM SP-2 system located at NASA ARC. (2) A number of communication strategies were implemented. Specifically, the manager-worker strategy and the worker-worker strategy were tested. (3) A variety of load balancing strategies were investigated. Specifically, the static load balancing, task queue balancing and the Crutchfield algorithm were coded and evaluated. (4) The classical explicit Runge-Kutta scheme in the TEAM solver was replaced with an LU implicit scheme. And (5) the implicit TEAM-PVM solver was extensively validated through studies of unsteady transonic flow over an F-5 wing, undergoing combined bending and torsional motion. Book excerpt: "This thesis covers the development of a model for fluid flow which incorporates computational fluid dynamics simulations using three-dimensional planar porous media networks. Porous media are introduced along with applications and the need for computational models is discussed. Previous experiments and models are presented as well as features of the current model. This model constructs three-dimensional planar networks from cylindrical pipes and elbows of varying length, diameter, and angle. Simulations are carried out using a finite volume based computational fluid dynamics software. A methodology is provided to discuss the source code of the executable created to automate the modeling process. This process begins with the network creation from an existing code, which generates sets of random pore networks called 'realizations' and ends with linear and polynomial regressions used to provide curve fits for Darcy's law and Forchheimer's equation. Findings of these parameters are presented for varying porosity values of Berea sandstone simulated with single phase liquid water. Results show that the model follows Forchheimer's equation for certain porosities and follows experimental results. Finally, remarks on future work are given and a closing summary is presented."--Abstract.
