Book excerpt: The report describes a preliminary study to evaluate the applicability of three-dimensional finite element analysis for predicting the behavior of pavement systems. Since many pavement problems are not reducible to plane behavior, this new analysis technique should provide a good basis for future analysis of complicated pavement systems. The finite element computer program used in this study is designated SOLSAP and was originally developed to investigate the three-dimensional behavior of earth and earth-rock dams. It was used in this study to investigate the effect of a static load application (similar to that produced by the C-5A aircraft) on a flexible pavement section that had been previously field-tested at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station. SOLSAP considers both nonlinear stress-strain behavior and nonlinear volume characteristics. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: Layered elastic theories and finite element method are among the most familiar and practiced mechanistic approaches. These approaches succeed to a certain extent in the analysis of classical bottom-up fatigue cracking of relatively thin flexible pavements, where tensile stresses and strains govern the behavior at the asphalt layer. However, elastic theories are incapable of predicting other pavement distresses, including near-surface cracking. Similarly, finite element method, which is equipped with fracture and continuum mechanics theories, also poses a significant challenge to the analysis of the near-surface cracking problem, where crack initiation and propagation planes are not easily predictable. Hence, the main objective of this study is to identify the effect of loading tire contact stresses on developing near-surface cracking potential. A numerical approach is chosen to analyze the problem, taking into account considering nonuniform tire-pavement contact stresses and multi-axial stress states in the proximity of tires. This study highlights the impact of novel computational methods, such as the Generalized Finite Element Method (GFEM), on the discovery and understanding of cracking mechanisms in pavements. GFEM allows for realistic modeling of complex phenomena that control fracture initiation and propagation. In this study, GFEM is adapted to analyze relatively thick flexible pavement structures to predict near-surface cracking. The three-dimensional (3-D) and highly multi-axial nature of the problem is successfully captured by this method, which is ideally designed for 3-D fracture problems for complex geometries and mixed loading conditions. This study proposes a high-order domain integral method for the computation of the crack front parameters such as energy release rate and stress intensity factors (SIFs). The method provides an approximation of the energy release rate function as a linear combination of Legendre polynomials. As a result, extracted functions are smoothly varying, which is crucial to obtain accurate crack propagation paths in 3-D for elastic or inelastic materials. Crack front directionality is captured by the proposed formulations and implementation using an energy release rate-based approach. The study also applies for the first time the domain integral techniques to pavement fracture problems utilizing the asphalt concrete viscoelastic characteristics. The GFEM, equipped with the tools developed in this study, is used as a computational platform to analyze near-surface cracking in relatively thick flexible pavement structures. Three-dimensional models of typical pavement structures are developed to analyze near-surface cracking and make predictions for potential critical locations for crack initiation and growth. Two potential scenarios become evident for crack growth in the vicinity of tires: Shear crack under compression and tensile crack. It is observed from the analysis that shear crack growth is the dominant mode of crack development due to loading in the proximity of tires, while tensile crack growth appears to develop within the pavement.

Book excerpt: A three-dimensional (3-D) finite element model for concrete pavements, called 3DPAVE, was developed in this study in order to analyze accurately the many complex and interacting factors which influence the support provided to a concrete pavement. Pavement support and finite element models for pavements were first briefly reviewed. Based on the review, the ABAQUS general-purpose finite element software was used to develop a powerful and versatile 3-D model to overcome many of the inherent limitations of 2-D finite element models. A careful analysis of ABAQUS' many element types, features and options was conducted to select the components which would produce a robust and efficient model. The 3DPAVE consistently outperformed the 2-D model in accuracy over wide ranges of inputs for a variety of problems during its development. 3DPAVE was validated by comparison with measured deflection, stress, and strain data for traffic loading and temperature variation from AASHO Road Test, the Arlington Road Test, and the Portland Cement Association's slab experiments. In every comparison with measured field data, 3DPAVE's calculated responses were found to be in very good agreement with the measured responses. Applications of 3DPAVE were made to explore many complicated effects and interactions in concrete pavements, including foundation support; base thickness, stiffness, and interface bond/friction; slab curling and warping due to temperature and moisture gradients; dowel and aggregate interlock load transfer action at joints; and improved support with a widened lane, widened base, or tied concrete shoulder.

The text adopts a pedagogy in which a scientific approach, based on materials science and continuum mechanics, predicts the performance of any configuration of flexible roadways subjected to cyclic loadings. The authors incorporate state-of the-art computational mechanics to predict the evolution of material properties, stresses and strains, and roadway deterioration. Designed specifically for both students and practitioners, the book presents fundamentally complex concepts in a clear and concise way that aids the roadway design community to assimilate the tools for designing sustainable roadways using both traditional and innovative technologies.

NIKE3D (a general-purpose, three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) computer program) is the selected engine for critical stress calculation for airport rigid pavement design. The calculated edge stresses are used in the FEDFAA failure model to determine the slab thickness. Since FEDFAA is a tool for thickness design rather than for analysis, certain program modifications and selection of available elements in NIKE3D have been made during FEDFAA development; it includes (1) selection of the nonconforming eight-node solid element to model all layers of the pavement except the subgrade, (2) introduction of the infinite element to model the infinitely deep subgrade, (3) mesh densities in vertical and horizontal directions, and (4) slab size and width of subbase extension have been determined to fit the needs of the design. A procedure has also been developed to calculate the critical stress of the pavement from the stresses calculated by NIKE3D at the element Gaussian points. Finally, the modified 3D finite element-based program was evaluated by using three criteria: (1) the model must be theoretically correct; (2) the final stress calculation engine with modifications and simplifications provides critical stress close enough to the precise one; and (3) it should be able to complete this computation under aircraft load within a few minutes. This report provides detailed descriptions for model selections, program modifications, and numerical evaluations. The report concludes that the final tool satisfies all three criteria; therefore, it is a reliable and applicable tool for airport rigid pavement design."--P. [ii].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and construction of “long and deep” tunnels, i.e. tunnels under mountains, characterised by either considerable length and/or overburden, represent a considerable challenge. The scope of this book is not to instruct how to design and construct such tunnels but to share a method to identify the potential hazards related to the process of designing and constructing long and deep tunnels, to produce a relevant comprehensive analysis and listing, to quantify the probability and consequences, and to design proper mitigation measures and countermeasures. The design, developed using probabilistic methods, is verified during execution by means of the so called Plan for Advance of the Tunnel (PAT) method, which allows adapting the design and control parameters of the future stretches of the tunnel to the results of the stretches already finished, using the monitoring data base. Numerous criteria are given to identify the key parameters, necessary for the PAT procedure. Best practices of excavation management with the help of real time monitoring and control are also provided. Furthermore cost and time evaluation systems are analysed. Finally, contractual aspects related to construction by contract are investigated, for best development and application of models more appropriate for tunnelling-construction contracts. The work will be of interest to practising engineers, designers, consultants and students in mining, underground, tunnelling, transportation and construction engineering, as well as to foundation and geological engineers, urban planners/developers and architects.
