The effects of variations in electron energy and beam divergence and on material properties such as dielectric permittivities and the resultant coherence length upon the angular distribution and polarization of optical transition radiation has been investigated. A surprising observation important to the use of optical transition radiation as a diagnostic tool for high energy electron beams is the behavior of the perpendicular component of the intensity. In contrast to low energies where the parallel component dominates, at electron energies above 200 MeV, the perpendicular component dominates. This requires the use of a polarization filter to diagnose particle beam properties at high energies. Keywords: Theses, Transition radiation, Particle beams, Coherent transition radiation, Two foil interferometer, Beam diagnostics. (JHD).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical transition radiation (OTR) can be used as a beam diagnostic system for charged particle beams. The experimental setup developed here demonstrates the capability to observe and measure OTR due to an electron beam from a linear accelerator. The setup is compact, simple, and readily adapted to experimental work. Through the use of two software programs (QuickCapture and Image 1.14) and the QuickCapture frame grabber board, both qualitative and quantitative results are possible. One of the useful qualitative results is a three-dimensional beam profile, which is quickly produced from a captured image. The system measured the relative intensity with a 3% variation between several images of the same source. Angular measurements of OTR can be made with an angular resolution of 600 microradians. Keywords: Optical transition radiation; Charged particle beams; Theses; Beam profiling. (jhd).

Book excerpt: The commissioning of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) injector showed unexpected coherent optical transition radiation (COTR) for an uncompressed electron bunch downstream of a dog-leg transport line. In this paper, we develop a three-dimensional analysis of longitudinal space charge microbunching to explain the phenomenon. Our analysis takes into account the transverse correlation of the longitudinal space charge field due to shot-noise startup and finite observation angles of the radiation. We also apply this analysis to the LCLS COTR observations.

Book excerpt: Coherent radiation emitted from a relativistic electron bunch consists of wavelengths longer than or comparable to the bunch length. The intensity of this radiation out-numbers that of its incoherent counterpart, which extends to wavelengths shorter than the bunch length, by a factor equal to the number of electrons in the bunch. In typical accelerators, this factor is about 8 to 11 orders of magnitude. The spectrum of the coherent radiation is determined by the Fourier transform of the electron bunch distribution and, therefore, contains information of the bunch distribution. Coherent transition radiation emitted from subpicosecond electron bunches at the Stanford SUNSHINE facility is observed in the far-infrared regime through a room-temperature pyroelectric bolometer and characterized through the electron bunch-length study. To measure the bunch length, a new frequency-resolved subpicosecond bunch-length measuring system is developed. This system uses a far-infrared Michelson interferometer to measure the spectrum of coherent transition radiation through optical autocorrelation with resolution far better than existing time-resolved methods. Hence, the radiation spectrum and the bunch length are deduced from the autocorrelation measurement. To study the stimulation of coherent transition radiation, a special cavity named BRAICER is invented. Far-infrared light pulses of coherent transition radiation emitted from electron bunches are delayed and circulated in the cavity to coincide with subsequent incoming electron bunches. This coincidence of light pulses with electron bunches enables the light to do work on electrons, and thus stimulates more radiated energy. The possibilities of extending the bunch-length measuring system to measure the three-dimensional bunch distribution and making the BRAICER cavity a broadband, high-intensity, coherent, far-infrared light source are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The high scienti?c interest in coherent X-ray light sources has stimulated world-wide e?orts in developing X-ray lasers. In this book a particularly promising approach is described, the free-electron laser (FEL), which is p- sued worldwide and holds the promise to deliver ultra-bright X-ray pulses of femtosecond duration. Other types of X-ray lasers are not discussed nor do we try a comparison of the relative virtues and drawbacks of di?erent concepts. The book has an introductory character and is written in the style of a universitytextbookforthemanynewcomerstothe?eldoffree-electronlasers, graduate students as well as accelerator physicists, engineers and technicians; it is not intended to be a scienti?c monograph for the experts in the ?eld. Building on lectures by one of us (J. R.) at the CERN Accelerator School, and motivated by the positive response to a series of seminars on “FEL t- ory for pedestrians”, given by P. S. within the framework of the Academic Training Program at DESY, we have aimed at presenting the theory of the low-gainandthehigh-gainFELinaclearandconcisemathematicallanguage. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the di?erential equations descr- ing the FEL dynamics. Although we have tried our best to be “simple”, the mathematical derivations are certainly not always as simple as one would like them to be. However, we are not aware of any easier approach to the FEL theory. Some of the more involved calculations are put into the appendices.

Book excerpt: This second open access volume of the handbook series deals with detectors, large experimental facilities and data handling, both for accelerator and non-accelerator based experiments. It also covers applications in medicine and life sciences. A joint CERN-Springer initiative, the "Particle Physics Reference Library" provides revised and updated contributions based on previously published material in the well-known Landolt-Boernstein series on particle physics, accelerators and detectors (volumes 21A, B1,B2,C), which took stock of the field approximately one decade ago. Central to this new initiative is publication under full open access
