Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid rocket motor chamber fluid dynamics are modeled using the full Navier Stokes equations. Mass injection from the sidewall of a cylinder simulates the propellant gasification. Prescribed boundary disturbances in velocity or pressure induce acoustic waves and other transients into the chamber geometry. Vorticity is generated on the sidewall from an inviscid interaction between transient pressure gradients and the fluid injected from the surface. Axisymmetric and three dimensional solutions obtained from analysis and computation are used to predict the dynamics of the co existing acoustic and rotational flows. Results suggest that intense transient vorticity is present throughout much of the chamber during a firing as long as acoustic transients are present. The rotational flow component is associated with intense transient shear stresses on the sidewall. Meanflow profiles and RMS intensity distributions are similar to those found in traditional turbulent pipe flows with injection. Traditional acoustic stability theory, based on purely irrotational flow assumptions, may describe the pressure variations in chamber models, but cannot describe the rotational component of the flow found in the present model.

Book excerpt: The report consists of two problems related to acoustic combustion instability in solid propellant rockets. In the first problem, coupled acoustic cavities with mass flux across a common boundary are studied. Since the propellant grain in a solid rocket motor may assume various configurations to meet specific performance criteria, physical models considering two or more wave-carrying systems coupled together so that acoustic motion of each is affected by the other are required in the study of acoustic instability in some motor designs. In the second problem, linear analyses employing both one-dimensional and three-dimensional flow models of the T-burner are studied to resolve which is the more appropriate representation of the growth of acoustic models yield an identical expression for the acoustic growth rate of dominant longitudinal modes in the T-burner if properly formulated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of research on our studies of acoustic-mean flow interactions in solid rocket motors is presented in this Final Technical Report. Two-dimensional, time-dependent solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations have been obtained in a rectangular duct under conditions of monochromatic acoustic forcing. The existence of a cut-off frequency, the appearance of oblique waves, and the behavior at resonance compare well with previously published analytical predictions. The thickness of the acoustic boundary layer and its response to imposed disturbances are also in good agreement with theory. The code is being modified to include nonpremixed combustion, which will allow studying acoustic interactions with a chemically reactive mean flow. (MM).
