Book excerpt: Thousands of years after an American Indian tribe settled at the foot of a great spring, William Penn and the Quakers arrived in New Hope, Pennsylvania. It would be the beginning of an epic romance, as the borough has developed into one of the most beloved river towns in the world. During the Revolutionary War, General George Washington marched through the borough on four documented occasions. At the pinnacle of the war, ten thousand Continental Army troops crossed Coryell’s Ferry as they went on to win a crucial victory at the Battle of Monmouth. But it’s not just New Hope’s location on the Delaware River that has made is so important. Artists of the impressionist school produced great landscape paintings there, and classic Broadway and Hollywood stars played in front of the footlights at New Hope's famous Bucks County Playhouse. In more recent years, the borough became the first in Pennsylvania to pass a comprehensive ordinance banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Take a fascinating journey focusing on one of the nation’s most colorful river towns, and learn all about its diverse population, eclectic shops, and natural beauty. This is New Hope, Pennsylvania.
Book Synopsis The World of the Tavern by : Beat Kümin
Download or read book The World of the Tavern written by Beat Kümin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of drink received a great deal of attention from early modern Europeans. Preachers, physicians, authorities, artists and travellers all addressed it from a range of different perspectives. At the same time, inns, taverns and alehouses served as multifunctional centres in towns and villages throughout Europe. This combination resulted in a wealth of sources, both institutional and cultural, which are only now beginning to be explored. This anthology features new research on public houses in England, Russia and the German lands. In a series of general, thematic and regional studies, contributors engage with broader debates in early modern history, shedding light on such key issues as consumption, travel and communication, state building, confessional identity, fiscal practice, gender and household relations, and the use of public spaces. The result is a volume that should appeal to anybody with an interest in early modern cultural history.

Download or read book Hotel Mavens written by Stanley Turkel, CMHS and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "maven" is defined by Wikipedia as a "trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass knowledge on to others." Since the 1980s it has become more common when the New York Times columnist William Safire adapted it to describe himself as "the language maven." The word from Hebrew is mainly confined to American English and was included in the Oxford English Dictionary second edition (1989). My three hotel mavens are: 1) Lucius M. Boomer, one of the most famous hoteliers of his time, was chairman of the Hotel Waldorf-Astoria Corporation. In a career of over half a century, he directed such celebrated hotels as the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia, the Taft in New Haven, the Lenox in Boston, and the McAlpin, Claridge, Sherry-Netherland and the original as well as the current Waldorf-Astoria in New York. 2) George C. Boldt who was the genius of the original Waldorf-Astoria. It was said of him that he made innkeeping a profession and, more than any man, was responsible for the modern American hotel. 3) Oscar of the Waldorf who was described in 1898 by the New York Sun: "In only one New York hotel, however, is there a personage deserving to be called a maître d'hotel. Anyone who studies him closely will soon arrive at a firm conviction that he might quite as appropriately have been called General or Admiral, if circumstances had not led him into the hotel business. Oscar knows everybody." Oscar was a superstar of his time and one of the stalwarts who managed both the original and the current Waldorf-Astoria. Among his many duties, Oscar commanded a staff of 1,000 persons bedsides conducting a school for waiters, at the time the only one of its kind in the United States. In 1896, Oscar wrote one of the greatest cookbooks of its time: "The Cook Book by 'Oscar of the Waldorf'. It contains 907 pages and 3,455 recipes.
