Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book contains an amazing selection of poems which demonstrates the strength of the poetic voice of Ireland, the wit and richness of the language, the breath of inspiration which is as strong today as it was in centuries past. This wonderful compilation goes back to the earliest Irish writings which arose from a past shrouded in mystery to the voices of Jonathan Swift, Thomas Moore, Oscar Wilde and the great poets of the twentieth and twenty-first century, including - among others - poems by W B Yeates, Louis MacNeice, Patrick Kavanagh, Brendon Kennelly and Seamus Heaney, who is justly regarded as one of the outstanding voices of our times, and who was awarded the Whitbread Book of the Year in 1996 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995.

Book Synopsis Sorry for Your Troubles by : Pádraig Ó Tuama
Download or read book Sorry for Your Troubles written by Pádraig Ó Tuama and published by Hymns Ancient and Modern Ltd. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most engaging voices contemporary spirituality in is that of the Irish poet, Pádraig O'Tuama. This second poetry collection arises out of a decade of his hearing stories of people who have lived through personal and political conflict in Northern Ireland, the Middle East and other places of conflict. These poems tell stories of individuals who have lived through conflict: their loves and losses, their hope and generosity. One poem, 'Shaking hands' was written when Pádraig witnessed the historic handshake between Queen Elizabeth II and Martin McGuinness, who has since used the poem publicly. The phrase 'Sorry for your troubles' is used all over Ireland. It comes directly from an Irish phrase, yet Irish has no word for 'bereavement' - the word used is 'troiblóid'. So the phrase would be better translated 'Sorry for your bereavements'. With this in mind, this new book speaks evocatively about a time when thousands of people lost their lives and many thousands more lived through the searing pain of grief.

Book Synopsis Clavis Litterarum Hibernensium by : Donnchadh Ó Corráin
Download or read book Clavis Litterarum Hibernensium written by Donnchadh Ó Corráin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work describes the whole literary and scholarly output of the whole of the Irish middle ages (4th-17th centuries), in Latin and in the vernaculars, and tries to do so as comprehensively as possible, esp. in biblica, liturgica, computistica, hagiographica and grammatica. The book focuses both on individual manuscripts and on textual transmission. In the case of manuscripts, it gives succinctly information and a detailed bibliography, always chronologically arranged. In the case of texts, it lists the manuscripts in which they occur or, on occasion, where such a list can be found, together with a bibliography of relevant publications. In the case of both, there are running cross-references to the standard works of reference. Concordantiae, at the end of the volume, reinforce that. The 'Index Manuscriptorum' is the most comprehensive attempt so far to list the MSS written by the medieval Irish or transmitting their texts. It should allow new work on the fortuna of Irish MSS and texts and their influence throughout the middle ages. The chapters on MSS and texts written in Irish provide the treatment of several areas: annals, genealogies, vernacular law, early poetry, bardic poetry and metrics.--See publisher's website.
