Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Religion: And Other Subjects This vague definition, however, was the ray of light which guided him onward in Mathematical study. It became the Subject of continued thought. In his play hours, he would shut himself up in an empty room, and draw with chalk on the floor, triangles, parallelograms, and circles, without knowing their scientific names. He would compare these several fig ures, and would examine the relations that their several lines bore to each other; and in this way, he gradually arrived at the proof of the fact, that the sum of all the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles, which is the thirty second proposi tion of the first book of Euclid. The young geometer had just attained this point, when his father surprized him, deeply occupied in the prohibited study. But he was himself no less astonished than his son, when, on examining into the, nature of his occupation, he ascertained the conclusion to which he had come and on inquiring how he arrived at it, the child point ed out several other principles which he had previously asoer tained, and at length stated the first principles which he had gathered for himself in the way of axioms and definitions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Thoughts on Religion, and Other Subjects Connected With It His observations on the corruption of our nature are undoubtedly most humiliating, and may at first re pel even some pious readers. But when his style and manner of expression on this subject are become fa miliar, and his full and elevated idea of Christianity as the remedy of it, is apprehended, this momentary dislike will yield to admiration and love. The reader will find that there is such a deep knowledge of scrip tural truth in these remarks, illustrations so new and striking, drawn from a variety of sources, and so holy a tendency in every part of the statement, that he will peruse it again and again, with increased advantage, and growing conviction and esteem. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Life and Thought The following observations on Religious Life and Thought, although appearing in the popular form of Sermons, and printed as they were delivered from week to week to my own Congrega tion, and having the slightness of structure that such communi cations require, are not hasty expressions of opinion. They are portions of a deliberately formed body of opinion. The concep tions of religion to be found in them have been elaborated at leisure. The statement of these conceptions is often made with little enough leisure; but I wish it to be distinctly understood that the Sermons do not set forth tentative essays at the solution of a great problem. I would rather that they were looked upon as sundry efforts to familiarize the public mind with results at which I have myself arrived after many years of special study. Not that I suppose for a moment that I have seen wholly round the subject treated of. I know it too well to entertain any such notion. I can honestly make use of words of Kant, applied by him to another subject of inquiry: Alle Aufgaben aufib'sen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cosmic View of Religion These pages undertake to deal with religion in its generic aspects, and from the side of the uni verse. The religious instinct is such a persistent radical, and so evidently here to stay, that the whole issue of the soul's fellowship with the Di vine may be investigated from the viewpoint of the unity of creation. If man has come up out of things, he will not, in the long run, be largely influenced by any theory of detachment. The better understandings, therefore, of what this human is, in his inmost being, are to be reached by a careful estimate of his permanent outward correspondences, and of his actions under them, and of the degree of mastery which they have over him. We have come to the time when the serious minded refuse to go to school to the teacher who has to have himself whipped into acceptance of the nature truths which research has uncovered. SO great and unquestioned have been the recent advances in psychology, in chemistry, in physics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The title - Faith and Modern Thought - was chosen by the writer long before he knew that a similar subject - Christianity and Modern Thought - had been proposed for a course of lectures in Boston, during the winter of 1875-6. The material is composed, in part, of essays prepared for special occasions, and subsequently published in Quarterly Reviews. If, in defence of certain positions, plain words have been employed, they are in reply to plain words employed in attack. If it be questioned whether the spirit of the book is in too close sympathy with the spirit of the time, the author has no reply to make; if it be asserted, he has no apology to offer. Earnest inquiry everywhere prevails. Old theories are scrutinized; new theories are criticised. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of Reason: A Series of Discourses on the Leading Topics of Religion My darling boy, kissed but a moment since, And laid away all rosy in the dark Is talking to himself. What does he say? Not much, in truth, that I can understand; But now and then, among the pretty sounds That he is making, falls upon my ear My name. And then the sand-man softly comes Upon him and he sleeps. And what am I, Here in my book, but as a little child Trying to cheer the big and silent dark With foolish words? But listen, O, my God, My Father, and among them thou shalt hear Thy name. And soon I too shall sleep. When I awake I shall be still with thee. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Religion and Modern Thought Thought: a vague term, indeed, although, I suppose, we all know well enough what is meant by it. An essentially negative movement it is - its ultimate message to mankind the philosophy of Schopenhauer and his school: and to an examination of that philo sophy my First Chapter is devoted. But the view of life put before us by the Pessimists is, after all, to a large extent true, nor is it easy to see what answer can be given to their argument save that supplied by religious faith. Is religious faith, then, any longer possible? Or has Modern Thought been so fatal to it as is commonly asserted? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Infancy of Religion IN this little book there are presented some results of a study of religion in its most primitive and rudimentary forms. I was drawn to the subject by the curiosity to know whether religion could legitimately be called an instinct of human nature. Is it as much of the essence of man as, for example, the gift of speech Or is it some thing that he acquired in the course of his history, as he learned the art of making a boat to carry him across a river?
