This “timely and important” book (History News Network) gives us a glimpse into classrooms across the globe, where opinions about the United States are first formed. History Lessons includes selections from textbooks and teaching materials used in Russia, France, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Canada, and others, covering such events as the American Revolution, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Iran hostage crisis, and the Korean War—providing some alternative viewpoints on the history of the United States from the time of the Viking explorers to the post-Cold War era. By juxtaposing starkly contrasting versions of the historical events we take for granted, History Lessons affords us a sometimes hilarious, often sobering look at what the world thinks about America’s past. “A brilliant idea.” —Foreign Affairs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across a huge colourful canvas, ranging from the wilds of Scotland to Norway, Denmark and Rome, here is the story of the real MacBeth. Set aside Shakespeare's portrait: read instead of his struggle to make and save a united Scotland. In this impressively researched and vivid portrayal, Tranter belies the popular perception of a savage, murderous ambitious king. Instead, he tells of MacBeth's struggle to make and save a united Scotland; his devotion to his great love, the young Queen Gruoch; the humane laws they fought for; the great battle they were forced to fight. And the terrible price they paid. 'Through his imaginative dialogue, he provides a voice for Scotland's heroes' Scotland on Sunday
Book Synopsis The Hostages of the Northmen by : Stefan Olsson
Download or read book The Hostages of the Northmen written by Stefan Olsson and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to investigate the taking and giving of hostages in peace processes during the Viking Age and early Middle Ages in Scandinavia and adjacent areas. Scandinavia has been absent in previous research about hostages from the perspectives of legal and social history, which has mostly focused on Antiquity (the Roman Empire), Continental Germanic cultures, such as the Merovingian realm, and Anglo-Saxon England. The examples presented are from confrontations between Scandinavians and other peoples in which the hostage giving and taking was displayed as a ritual act and thus became symbolically important. Hostages were a vital part of the peace processes and used as resources by both sides in the 'areas of communication' within the 'areas of confrontation'. Literary texts as well as runic inscriptions, picture stones, place names, and personal names are used as source material.
