Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Writings of Thomas Paine: Containing a Biography As we have not at one instant renounced all our errors, we cannot at one stroke acquire knowl edge Of all our rights. France has had the honor of adding to the word Liberty that of Equality; and this word signifies essentially a principle that admits of no gradation in the things to which it applies. But equality is Often misunderstood, often misapplied, and often violated. Liberty and Property are words expressing all those of our possessions which are not of an intellectual nature. There are two kinds of property. Firstly, natural property, or that which comes to us from the Creator of the uni verse - such as the earth, air, water. Secondly, artificial or acquired property-the invention of men. In the latter, equality is impossible; for to distribute it equally it would be necessary that all should have contributed in the same propor tion, which can never be the case; and this being the case, every individual would hold on to his own property, as his right share. Equality of natural property is the subject of this little es say. Every individual in the world is born there in with legitimate claims on a certain kind of property, or its equivalent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Works of Thomas Paine: Complete; Political and Theological There needs but to have the light of truth shine fully upon the real character of Thomas Paine, to prove him to have been a far greater man than his most ardent admirers have hitherto given him credit for being. Paine's history is so intimately connected with that of progress both before and since his time, that it will necessarily embrace a very wide range of liberal information. I am not unmindful that there have been hundreds, perhaps thousands of author-heroes and heroines. Bacon, Locke, Luther, Voltaire, * Fourier and Robert Owen were prominently of the former, and Mary Wollstonecraft and Frances Wright were decidedly among the latter. But it appears to me, that none of their writings have been quite such text-books of revolution, as those of Rousseau and Paine were, and those of Comte now are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America's Debt to Thomas Paine No nation at the present time has a grander destiny folded within its powers and opportunities than the United States of America. Our very name stands for a freedom and fellowship, surpassing in possible achievement the brightest hopes of man. We are a free people. We love liberty. There is, in the breast of every Amer-can citizen, an instinct of freedom which resists any and all attempts to encroach upon human rights. The men who made freedom a fact in America, and united the States in one purpose, have been eulogized with every word of praise that gratitude could coin or affection employ. We have spoken the names of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and Adams - our four great Americans - with all the fondness that the world has for countrymen, and all the love that mankind has for heroes. But there was no man who threw into the struggle for American Independence a clearer head, a braver heart, and a more tireless energy than the man who, though born in England, took the whole world for his country, - Thomas Paine. This man, whom America to-day is ashamed to honor, did as much to put the crown of Liberty upon the forehead of our nation as any of those men whose names are enshrined in hallowed remembrance, from Maine to California. Would we realize the power that Paine possessed, we must turn back the pages of history and read over this man's life and the record of his services in the cause of liberty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Oration of the Life and Services of Thomas Paine At the age of thirty-seven, Thomas Paine left England for America, with the high hope of being instrumental in the establishment of a free government. In his own country he could ac complish nothing. Those two vultures - Church and State - were ready to tear in pieces and devour the heart of any one who might deny their divine right to enslave the world. Upon his arrival in this country, he found himself possessed of a letter of introduction, signed by another Infidel, the illustrious Franklin. This, and his native genius, constituted his entire capital; and he needed no more. He found the colonies clamoring for justice; whining about their grievances; upon their knees at the foot of the throne, imploring that mixture of idiocy and insanity, George the III., by the grace of God, for a restoration of their ancient privileges. They were not endeavoring to become free men, but were trying to soften the heart of their mas' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writings of Thomas Paine, Vol. 1: 1774-1779 NO apology is needed for an edition of Thomas Paine's writings, but rather for the tardiness of its appearance. For although there have been laborious and useful collections of his more famous works, none of them can be fairly described as adequate. The compilers have failed to discover many characteristic essays, they printed from imperfect texts, and were unable to find competent publishers courageous enough to issue in suitable form the Works of Paine. It is not credit able that the world has had to wait so long for a complete edition of writings which excited the gratitude and admira tion of the founders of republican liberty in America and Europe; nevertheless those writings, so far as accessible, have been read and pondered by multitudes, and are today in large and increasing demand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of Great Reformers: Thomas Paine In England, Franklin was accused of being the author, and he neither denied nor admitted'it. But when a lady reproached him for having used the fine alliterative phrase, applied to the king, That Royal British Brute, he smiled and said blandly, Madame, I would never have been as disrespectfulto the brute creation as that.' Sense struck the keynote of popular feeling, and the accusation of treason, hurled at it from many sources, only served to advertise it 3 It supplied the common people with reasons, and gave statesmen arguments. The legislature of Pennsylvania voted Paine an honorarium of five hundred pounds, and the University of Pennsylvania awarded him the degree of Master of Arts, in recognition of eminent services to literature and human rights. John Quincy Adams said, Paine's pamphlet, 'common Sense, ' crystallized public Opinion and was the first factor in bringing about the Revolution. These facts have been admitted by the anonymous assassin, Chalmers himself, and they re quire no comment. The second Life of Mr. Paine is the production of an English Emigrant, of the name of Cheetham. This was pub lished at New York, in 1809. The writer, exclusive of his being a treacherous apostate, was an illiterate blockhead; his misrepresentations have not even the dress of decent language to recommend them, and the frequent contradictions with which the book abounds must entitle it to the contempt of every reader.
