Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating record of the early years of Thomas Lawrence: the story of an exceptional young portraitist and future president of the Royal Academy. Like his Renaissance predecessors Raphael, Michelangelo and Dürer, the young Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) was considered to be a boy genius. This survey of Lawrence's first twenty-five years tells the story of an exceptional artist growing up at the end of the century when Britain created its own unique artistic voice. It accompanies a major exhibition at the Holburne Museum in Bath and includes previously unpublished works as well as some of Lawrence's most brilliant masterpieces. Lawrence first came to public attention when he was cited in a scientific paper on 'early genius in children'; shortly afterwards his family moved to Bath where the eleven-year-old was kept busy making likenesses of the spa town's fashionable visitors. By 1790, his spectacular portraits were the most applauded works in the Royal Academy's annual exhibition, which opened days before his twenty-first birthday. This book considers the young artist's self-image as a prodigy, the impact of Bath's rich cultural life on his formation, the rapid development of his painting technique following his move to London, and his use of celebrity, print media and the Royal Academy to grow his reputation. Particular attention is given to Lawrence's perceptive depictions of old age and bold celebrations of youthful energy. His portraits from this time present a fascinating glimpse of British high society at the turn of a memorable century: they include celebrities such as the Duchess of Devonshire, Emma Hamilton and actresses Sarah Siddons and Elizabeth Farren, as well as political leaders, members of the Bluestocking circle and the Royal Family.

Book excerpt: In the first three decades of the 20th century Augustus John (1878-1961) was widely considered one of the greatest living British artists, famous almost as much for his extraordinary Bohemian lifestyle as for his outstanding portraits, etchings and drawings. John was born in Wales in 1878 and educated at the Slade School of Art in London in the 1890s, where the onus of teaching was on the daily life class and a close study of the Old Masters. He soon emerged as a wonderfully gifted draughtsman - indeed, the American painter John Singer Sargent would declare that John's youthful drawings were amongst the fi nest seen since the Renaissance. Dividing his life between England, Wales and France, and reaching his prime in the years immediately before the outbreak of the Great War, by 1910 John would be likened to a British Gauguin, a Welsh Post-Impressionist using bold colours and a willfully naive and primitive style to explore the complex combination of romanticism, escapism and alienation engendered by 20th-century life.00Exhibition: Poole Museum, UK (26.05.2018-30.09.2019) / The Salisbury Museum, UK (18.05.-29.09.2019).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new examination of the early ceramic work of the world’s most famous potter, Grayson Perry, this book includes previously lost and unpublished pieces. Grayson Perry was the first ceramicist to win the Turner Prize, the internationally renowned award for the best young British Artist. He rapidly established a unique brand as “the transvestite potter.” This book examines the plates, pots, and statues from the 1980s to the mid-1990s with which he established his career. Perry sold many of his early pieces for modest sums and subsequently lost track of their whereabouts. With the help of an international art treasure hunt this book brings together both his known and previously lost and undocumented pieces. Accompanying Perry’s traveling exhibition, which opens at the Holburne Museum, Bath, in January 2020, this book features full color illustrations of his seminal ceramic works from this period. As well as an essay from the artist and critical essays from experts on Perry’s work.
